Description

The Flippin' Frog® XL Replacement Chlorine Cartridge is the consumable cartridge for the Flippin' Frog XL Pool System — the larger version of FROG's floating chlorinator, sized for pools holding 5,000 to 10,000 gallons. Each XL cartridge typically delivers 3–4 weeks of sanitizing before the system flips over, signaling it's time for a replacement.

If your pool is in the 5,000–10,000 gallon range, the XL cartridge is the right consumable for you. The original (smaller) Flippin' Frog cartridge is sized for pools 2,000 gallons and up, but the chlorine load it carries isn't enough to keep a larger pool properly sanitized. The XL holds more pre-filled chlorine and is calibrated to release at a rate that matches the larger water volume — which is the difference between a pool that stays clear and one that fights cloudiness all season.

Inside the cartridge is Trichloroisocyanuric acid (Trichlor) at 99% concentration, delivering 90% available chlorine — the same stabilized chlorine used in most pool tablet products. Stabilized means the chlorine has cyanuric acid built in to protect it from being burned off by UV sunlight, which is essential for outdoor pool use. The cartridge releases chlorine gradually as your pool circulates water through the dispenser, holding a steady sanitizer level for weeks instead of the spikes and dips of manual tab dosing.

Why the XL Cartridge Matters for Bigger Pools: Sanitizing 8,000 gallons of pool water is fundamentally a different problem from sanitizing 3,000 gallons. The XL cartridge holds enough chlorine to meet that demand for 3–4 weeks at a time without running short — which means fewer cartridge swaps, less risk of running out between trips to the pool, and more consistent water clarity through the season. Trying to make a smaller cartridge work in a larger pool is the most common cause of "my Flippin' Frog isn't working" complaints.

What's in the Box
  • 1 x Flippin' Frog XL Replacement Chlorine Cartridge

Note: This is the chlorine cartridge only. It pairs with the mineral cartridge inside the Flippin' Frog XL floating dispenser. If you don't have the dispenser yet, you'll need the Flippin' Frog XL Complete Pool Care System instead — that kit includes the floating dispenser, the mineral cartridge, and a chlorine cartridge to get you started.

Key Features
  • Sized for larger pools — calibrated for pools 5,000 to 10,000 gallons, where the standard Flippin' Frog cartridge would be undersized.
  • Lasts 3–4 weeks per cartridge — fewer swaps over the pool season than the smaller version.
  • Self-regulating chlorine release — adjustable dial sets the release rate, then the cartridge handles the rest.
  • Built-in flip indicator — the dispenser tips over when the cartridge is empty, giving you a clear visual cue.
  • Stabilized chlorine (Trichlor) — protected against UV breakdown for outdoor pool use.
  • 90% available chlorine — high-concentration cartridge for steady sanitizing in larger water volumes.
  • Removable during pool use — pull the floater out while swimmers are in the pool, return it after.
How It Works

The Larger Cartridge Format

The XL cartridge is physically larger than the standard Flippin' Frog chlorine cartridge and holds more pre-filled Trichlor — that's what allows it to sanitize a larger pool for the same 3–4 week cycle. The cartridge fits into the larger XL dispenser (not the standard floater), and snaps together with the XL mineral cartridge to form a complete two-way sanitizing unit.

Two-Way Sanitizing

Water flows through the floating XL dispenser as it drifts around the pool, picking up both minerals (from one cartridge) and chlorine (from this one). The minerals condition the water and provide a first line of defense against bacteria, which lets the chlorine cartridge run at a lower release rate and still keep your pool clean. The net effect is less chlorine used, less of the harsh chlorine smell, and water that's noticeably gentler on swimwear and skin.

The Flip Indicator

As the chlorine depletes, the XL floater becomes unbalanced and physically tips over in the water. When you see it flip — usually visible from across the pool deck — that's your signal that the cartridge is empty and needs replacing. No test strips, no calendar reminders, just a glance.

Pro Tip: Don't Let It Sink— When the cartridge is spent and you're swapping in a new one, never let the old chlorine cartridge sink to the bottom of the pool. Concentrated Trichlor sitting against a pool liner or finish can bleach a permanent spot. If the old cartridge still has chlorine remaining after the flip, place it back in the floater (or in the pool's skimmer) until it's completely empty before disposing.

Directions for Use
  1. Ensure pool equipment is working properly with adequate circulation per your pool manufacturer's recommendations. Good water flow is essential to the cartridge working as designed.
  2. Balance your pool water first. Target pH between 7.2 and 7.8, with Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness in their normal ranges.
  3. Shock the pool to remove any accumulated contaminants before the cartridge takes over routine sanitizing.
  4. Align the arrows on the XL mineral cartridge and the XL chlorine cartridge.
  5. Push the cartridges together and rotate to connect until they lock into the Flippin' Frog XL dispenser.
  6. Set the chlorine output dial based on your pool's gallons and use level, per the chart on the cartridge.
  7. Place the dispenser in the pool and let it float freely.
  8. Test water with Frog Test Strips daily during the first week. Adjust the dial setting if needed to hold free chlorine in the target range.
  9. When the system flips, replace the chlorine cartridge. Rotate to align the arrows, pull the cartridges apart, snap in a fresh XL chlorine cartridge.

Pro Tip: Follow the Label First— Always follow the safety instructions on the Flippin' Frog packaging and your pool's manual — they take precedence over any general guidance. Concentrated chlorine should never be mixed with other pool chemicals, and the cartridge should always be handled with dry hands.

Standard or XL — which Flippin' Frog do you have? The XL is physically larger than the standard system. If your dispenser is the bigger one designed for above-ground pools 5,000 gallons and up, you need this XL cartridge. If your pool is in the 2,000–4,000 gallon range, you have the standard Flippin' Frog and need the smaller cartridge. Our team can help confirm before you order — just reach out.

FROG® Brand FAQs

What makes FROG® different from regular chlorine or bromine?

FROG uses minerals as a first line of defense, which lets it sanitize with a much lower level of chlorine or bromine than traditional systems. Minerals and sanitizer work together to keep water clean two ways at once. The payoff for you is water that feels softer, has little to no chemical smell, and takes far less hands-on maintenance.

What is "Fresh Mineral Water®"?

It's FROG's term for the water its systems create: cleaner, clearer, softer, and easier to maintain. The minerals condition the water and help hold pH steady, while the reduced sanitizer level handles the rest — so you get sparkling water that's gentler on skin, hair, and swimwear than heavily chlorinated water.

Do FROG® cartridges really reduce how much chlorine I use?

Yes. Because the minerals do part of the sanitizing work, FROG® systems need significantly less chlorine or bromine to keep water clean. The @ease line with SmartChlor® Technology, for example, can use a fraction of the chlorine of a conventional hot tub program while still keeping the water properly sanitized.

How do the pre-filled cartridges work?

Each FROG® cartridge comes pre-filled with the right mineral or sanitizer formula — there's nothing to measure or mix. You simply drop or snap the cartridge into its holder or dispenser, set it, and let it do the work as water circulates. When a cartridge is spent, you swap in a fresh one. That's the "no mess, no guess, no stress" approach
FROG® is known for.

Will FROG® products work with my pool, hot tub, or swim spa?

FROG® makes systems for all three, in sizes ranging from small hot tubs to large in-ground pools, so there's almost always a fit. Some products are model-specific (for example, @ease cartridges sized for particular spa brands), so it's worth confirming the right version for your equipment. If you're unsure which FROG® product matches your setup, reach out and we'll help you pin it down.

How often do I replace the cartridges, and do I still need to shock?

Replacement timing depends on the product and your usage — mineral cartridges generally last for months, while sanitizer cartridges are swapped more often (the system's indicator tells you when). You'll still add a periodic shock to keep water freshly oxidized, but typically far less often than a fully manual program requires. Always follow the schedule printed on your specific product's packaging.

About Frog®

For more than 25 years, FROG® has been making pool, hot tub, and swim spa care dramatically simpler — without asking owners to compromise on water quality. Made by King Technology, FROG built its reputation on one patented idea: combine the natural cleaning power of minerals with a low, steady level of sanitizer, so your water stays clean using far less chlorine or bromine than traditional methods.

The result is what FROG calls Fresh Mineral Water® — water that's cleaner because it fights bacteria two ways (minerals plus a low level of sanitizer), clearer because balanced minerals help hold pH steady, and softer because those same minerals condition the water for a gentler feel on your skin. And it's easier, because nearly everything comes in pre-filled, drop-in cartridges. No measuring, no mess, no guesswork.

That convenience-first philosophy runs through the entire FROG lineup — from the SmartChlor®-powered @ease systems for hot tubs and swim spas, to the bromine-based Serene line, to the POOL FROG and Flippin' FROG systems for pools of every size, plus a full range of support chemicals and problem-solvers. Whatever you're sanitizing, there's a FROG product sized for it, and they're all built around the same goal: less time on maintenance, more time enjoying the water.
