Cloudy, Green Water
Algae from low sanitizer. Shock aggressively and restore chlorine to 3ā5 ppm.
Clear, Green Water
Dissolved copper or iron from fill water. Sequester with metal control products.
Brown Water
Iron or manganese from fill water. Common with well water ā treat with metal sequestrates and pre-filter at fills.
Excessive Foaming
Body oils, lotions, and detergents. Defoamer for immediate relief; shock weekly for prevention.
Water Odor
That "strong chlorine smell" usually means NOT enough chlorine. Shock to break down chloramines.
Eye/Skin Irritation
Usually pH imbalance or chloramines. Test, balance pH, shock if needed.
Scum Deposit on Waterline
Body oils and lotions building up. Clean the line; use enzyme-based water treatment weekly.
White Scale Deposits
Calcium scale from hard water or high pH. Treat with stain & scale defense; pre-filter at fills.
Frequently Asked Questions
I just bought a hot tub ā what water care products do I need to start?
Your starting kit depends on your spa's sanitizer system. For salt-system spas: the FreshWater Starter Bundle (Vanishing Act calcium remover + 10 lbs of spa salt + 5-way test strips) covers the essentials. For chlorine or bromine spas: at minimum, you need test strips, your sanitizer of choice, a shock product, and pH up/down for adjustments. Our Water Care Guides walk through the specific routine for each method. When in doubt, call us at (208) 523-4633 with your spa make and model and we'll build a starting kit list.
How often should I test my hot tub water?
2ā3 times per week minimum for routine use. Daily during heavy use (multiple bathers per day or extended use). After every fresh fill before adding chemicals. Testing is the cheapest way to prevent water problems ā a bottle of 5-Way Test Strips lasts most owners 6+ months and prevents hundreds of dollars in chemical guesswork.
How do I find the right filter or pillow for my spa?
Use our fitment guides: Filter Fitment Guide and Pillow Fitment Guide. Each lists which filter or pillow fits which spa make and model. If your spa isn't listed or you're not sure which one fits, contact us with your spa's brand, model, and year ā we'll look up the right part for you.
How often should I drain and refill my hot tub?
Depends on your sanitizer system. Chlorine and bromine spas: every 90 days for routine bather use, more often with heavy use. FreshWater Salt System spas: up to 12 months with proper maintenance. ACE Salt System spas: 6ā9 months typically. Higher bather load, hard fill water, and heavy contaminants all shorten the cycle. Our water care method guides cover specific timing for each system.
Are FreshWater Salt System cartridges really worth the price difference vs. Amazon?
Yes ā and not for the reason most people think. The cartridges from authorized dealers (like us) are genuine OEM Watkins Wellness, while Amazon and unauthorized marketplaces are flooded with counterfeit cartridges. The counterfeits look nearly identical but use inferior chemistry that fails in weeks AND can permanently damage your spa's control system. The visual tell: authentic cartridges have gray pins; counterfeits often have white pins. As an authorized dealer, every cartridge we sell is sourced direct from Watkins Wellness ā never through third-party resellers.
Can I set up autoship for water care products?
Yes, on most water care products and replacement consumables. Autoship sends your selected products on a schedule you set (every 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6 months). The most common autoship products are FreshWater salt cartridges (every 4 months), spa salt (annually), test strips, and Stain & Scale Defense.Manage your autoship subscriptions hereā pause, skip, change interval, or cancel anytime.
Do you ship spa parts and chemicals nationwide?
Yes ā we ship throughout the contiguous United States. Most orders over $99 ship free; specific heavy items (some chemicals, larger parts) have flat rates. See our Free & Flat Rate Shipping page for details. Some hazmat-classified spa chemicals can't be shipped to Alaska, Hawaii, or U.S. territories due to DOT regulations.
What if my water problem doesn't match any of the symptoms?
Some water issues have unusual causes ā biofilm in plumbing, malfunctioning ozone generators, degraded salt cells, contamination from outside sources. Our service team has seen thousands of unusual cases. Call us at(208) 523-4633with a description of what you're seeing, your recent maintenance history, and your test strip readings, and we'll help diagnose. If you're in our Idaho service area, we can bring a water sample to one of our showrooms for free on-site testing.
