Description

The Flippin' Frog® XL Complete Pool Care System is a two-cartridge water care kit designed for pools holding 5,000 to 10,000 gallons — the medium-sized backyard pool range that's too big for the standard Flippin' Frog system and too small to need a fully automated pool chlorinator. Snap the mineral and chlorine cartridges together inside the floating dispenser, drop it in the pool, and the system handles the daily sanitizing work on its own.

The fundamental selling point is the same as the smaller version: instead of measuring chlorine granules, tossing tabs in a floater, or making weekly trips to the pool store, you set a dial once and let two pre-filled cartridges do the work for weeks at a time. The mineral cartridge handles continuous antimicrobial protection for up to 6 months. The chlorine cartridge releases stabilized chlorine at the rate you set for 3–4 weeks, then flips over to tell you it's time to swap it. Together they need up to 50% less chlorine than a traditional chlorine-only program — gentler water, less smell, less wear on swimsuits.

The XL is the right starting product for the most common backyard pool size — typically the 18 to 24 foot above-ground pools that hold around 6,000–8,000 gallons. If you've been running one of those on chlorine tabs and have finally had enough of the daily judgment calls, the XL system is a different approach altogether.

Why Mineral + Chlorine Beats Chlorine Alone: A pure-chlorine pool program needs to maintain enough free chlorine to do all the sanitizing work itself — and that level is high enough to cause the strong chemical smell, bleached swimsuits, and irritated skin that most pool owners associate with "pool chemicals." Silver minerals in the green cartridge destroy bacteria in their own right, which means the chlorine level can run lower and still keep the water clean. Less chlorine, less smell, less irritation, and water that feels noticeably better against your skin.

What's in the Box
  • 1 x Flippin' Frog XL Floating Dispenser — the housing that holds both cartridges and floats in your pool
  • 1 x XL Mineral Cartridge — silver-based antimicrobial cartridge that lasts up to 6 months
  • 1 x XL Chlorine Cartridge — pre-filled stabilized chlorine cartridge that lasts 3–4 weeks

Note: This is the complete starter system. When the chlorine cartridge runs out (about every 3–4 weeks), you only need to replace the chlorine cartridge — sold separately as the Flippin' Frog XL Replacement Chlorine Cartridge. The mineral cartridge will keep working for the full 6 months before it needs to be replaced.

Key Features
  • Sized for medium pools — calibrated for 5,000 to 10,000 gallon pools, typically 18–24 foot above-ground or smaller in-ground.
  • Two-way sanitizing — silver minerals plus stabilized chlorine each kill bacteria. Together they need much less chlorine than chlorine alone.
  • 50% less chlorine — the silver mineral cartridge shares the sanitizing load.
  • Mineral cartridge lasts 6 months — drop it in at season start and replace it twice a year.
  • Chlorine cartridge lasts 3–4 weeks — far fewer reordering trips than tossing tabs every couple of days.
  • Self-regulating release — adjustable dial sets the chlorine output rate; no daily measuring or dosing required.
  • Built-in flip indicator — the dispenser tips over when the chlorine cartridge is empty, giving you a visual cue from across the pool.
  • Stabilized chlorine (Trichlor) — protected against UV breakdown for outdoor pool use.
  • Removable during pool use — pull the floater out while swimmers are in the pool, return it after.
How It Works

The Two Cartridges

The system has two pre-filled cartridges that snap together inside the floating dispenser. The mineral cartridge contains silver chloride (0.5%) in a slow-release housing — silver is the patented FROG mineral that destroys bacteria on its own and reduces the chlorine your pool needs to stay clean. The chlorine cartridge holds pre-filled Trichlor (99% trichloroisocyanuric acid, 90% available chlorine) that releases at the rate you set with the adjustable dial. As water circulates through the floating dispenser, both cartridges go to work continuously.

The Adjustable Dial

The chlorine cartridge has a release dial that you set based on your pool's needs. Bigger pool, hotter weather, or heavier swim use means turning the dial up; smaller pool, cooler weather, or light use means dialing it down. The initial-setting chart on the cartridge gives you a starting point. Test your water with FROG test strips, adjust the dial, and the system holds your free chlorine in a steady 0.5–1.0 ppm range for the cartridge's full 3–4 week life.

The Flip Indicator

The cartridges and the dispenser are designed so that as the chlorine cartridge depletes, the floater becomes unbalanced and physically tips over in the water. When you see it flip — usually visible from across the pool deck — that's your signal that the chlorine cartridge is empty and needs replacing. Twist the empty cartridge off the mineral cartridge, snap on a fresh chlorine cartridge, drop the whole thing back in the pool.

Pro Tip: Don't Let the Cartridge Sink— When you swap in a fresh chlorine cartridge, never let the old chlorine cartridge sink to the bottom of the pool. Concentrated Trichlor sitting against a pool liner or finish can bleach a permanent spot. If the old cartridge still has chlorine remaining after the flip, place it back in the floater (or in the pool's skimmer) until it's completely empty before disposing.

Directions for Use
  1. Ensure pool equipment is working properly with adequate circulation per the pool manufacturer's recommendations. Good water flow is essential to the system working as designed.
  2. Balance your pool water first. Target pH between 7.2 and 7.8, with Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness in their normal ranges.
  3. Shock the pool if needed to remove any accumulated contaminants before the cartridge takes over routine sanitizing.
  4. Align the arrows on the XL mineral cartridge and the XL chlorine cartridge.
  5. Push the cartridges together and rotate to connect until they lock into the Flippin' Frog XL dispenser.
  6. Set the chlorine output dial based on your pool's gallons and use level, per the chart on the cartridge.
  7. Place the dispenser in the pool and let it float freely.
  8. Maintain 0.5 to 1.0 ppm free chlorine. Test water with FROG Test Strips daily for the first week, and adjust the dial setting if your reading is consistently too high or too low.
  9. Remove the dispenser when swimmers are in the pool — return it to the water afterward.
  10. When the system flips, replace the chlorine cartridge. Twist the empty cartridge off the mineral cartridge, snap in a fresh chlorine cartridge.
  11. Replace the mineral cartridge every 6 months (or at your next pool refill, whichever comes first).

Pro Tip: Follow the Label First— Always follow the safety instructions on the Flippin' Frog XL packaging and your pool's manual — they take precedence over any general guidance. Concentrated chlorine should never be mixed with other pool chemicals, and the cartridge should always be handled with dry hands.

FROG® Brand FAQs

What makes FROG® different from regular chlorine or bromine?

FROG uses minerals as a first line of defense, which lets it sanitize with a much lower level of chlorine or bromine than traditional systems. Minerals and sanitizer work together to keep water clean two ways at once. The payoff for you is water that feels softer, has little to no chemical smell, and takes far less hands-on maintenance.

What is "Fresh Mineral Water®"?

It's FROG's term for the water its systems create: cleaner, clearer, softer, and easier to maintain. The minerals condition the water and help hold pH steady, while the reduced sanitizer level handles the rest — so you get sparkling water that's gentler on skin, hair, and swimwear than heavily chlorinated water.

Do FROG® cartridges really reduce how much chlorine I use?

Yes. Because the minerals do part of the sanitizing work, FROG® systems need significantly less chlorine or bromine to keep water clean. The @ease line with SmartChlor® Technology, for example, can use a fraction of the chlorine of a conventional hot tub program while still keeping the water properly sanitized.

How do the pre-filled cartridges work?

Each FROG® cartridge comes pre-filled with the right mineral or sanitizer formula — there's nothing to measure or mix. You simply drop or snap the cartridge into its holder or dispenser, set it, and let it do the work as water circulates. When a cartridge is spent, you swap in a fresh one. That's the "no mess, no guess, no stress" approach
FROG® is known for.

Will FROG® products work with my pool, hot tub, or swim spa?

FROG® makes systems for all three, in sizes ranging from small hot tubs to large in-ground pools, so there's almost always a fit. Some products are model-specific (for example, @ease cartridges sized for particular spa brands), so it's worth confirming the right version for your equipment. If you're unsure which FROG® product matches your setup, reach out and we'll help you pin it down.

How often do I replace the cartridges, and do I still need to shock?

Replacement timing depends on the product and your usage — mineral cartridges generally last for months, while sanitizer cartridges are swapped more often (the system's indicator tells you when). You'll still add a periodic shock to keep water freshly oxidized, but typically far less often than a fully manual program requires. Always follow the schedule printed on your specific product's packaging.

About Frog®

For more than 25 years, FROG® has been making pool, hot tub, and swim spa care dramatically simpler — without asking owners to compromise on water quality. Made by King Technology, FROG built its reputation on one patented idea: combine the natural cleaning power of minerals with a low, steady level of sanitizer, so your water stays clean using far less chlorine or bromine than traditional methods.

The result is what FROG calls Fresh Mineral Water® — water that's cleaner because it fights bacteria two ways (minerals plus a low level of sanitizer), clearer because balanced minerals help hold pH steady, and softer because those same minerals condition the water for a gentler feel on your skin. And it's easier, because nearly everything comes in pre-filled, drop-in cartridges. No measuring, no mess, no guesswork.

That convenience-first philosophy runs through the entire FROG lineup — from the SmartChlor®-powered @ease systems for hot tubs and swim spas, to the bromine-based Serene line, to the POOL FROG and Flippin' FROG systems for pools of every size, plus a full range of support chemicals and problem-solvers. Whatever you're sanitizing, there's a FROG product sized for it, and they're all built around the same goal: less time on maintenance, more time enjoying the water.
