Description

The FROG® Serene Bromine Cartridge is the consumable yellow cartridge for FROG's bromine-based Serene system — designed for hot tub owners who want the cleaner, gentler water of a mineral-and-bromine program without the daily fussing of traditional bromine dosing. Each 150g cartridge lasts 2 to 4 weeks depending on spa size and use, releasing bromine at the rate you set with the adjustable dial.

This is the standard single-cartridge refill — what you reorder when your current Serene bromine cartridge is depleted. It works in two different setups: the FROG Serene Floating System (a floating dispenser that drifts around your spa), and the FROG In-Line System that comes factory-installed on many hot tub brands. The cartridge is identical for both — what differs is just where the cartridge sits in your spa setup.

The Serene system pairs this yellow bromine cartridge with a separate blue mineral cartridge. Together they sanitize two ways: minerals as a first line of defense against bacteria, plus a low, steady level of bromine handling the rest of the work. That layered approach is what lets the Serene system use up to 50% less bromine than traditional bromine-only programs — gentler water, less smell, and far less wear on swimwear and skin.

Why Time-Released Bromine Works Better: A bromine tab dropped in a floater dissolves at one rate — the rate it dissolves. You can't really speed it up or slow it down. The Serene bromine cartridge has an adjustable output dial that controls how fast bromine releases into the water. Higher setting for hot weather or heavy use; lower setting for cooler weather or light use. Same cartridge, completely different release rate based on your spa's actual needs — which is the difference between always-correct bromine levels and the boom-and-bust cycles of unadjustable tabs.

What's in the Box
  • 1 x FROG® Serene Bromine Cartridge (yellow, 150g)

Note: This is the bromine cartridge only. To use the Serene system, you'll also need a FROG Serene Mineral Cartridge (blue, sold separately) and either a FROG Serene Floating System or a hot tub with the FROG In-Line System built in. If you're shopping for a complete refill kit at better per-cartridge pricing, look at the FROG Serene Cartridge Kit (3 bromine + 1 mineral).

Key Features
  • 150 grams of bromine in a pre-filled cartridge — no measuring, no handling raw bromine tabs.
  • Time Released Bromine Technology — gradual, steady release for 2–4 weeks per cartridge.
  • Adjustable output dial — set the release rate to match your spa size and bather load.
  • Up to 50% less bromine and chlorine when paired with a Serene mineral cartridge.
  • Works in two setups — fits both the Serene Floating System and factory-installed FROG In-Line systems.
  • Ozone compatible — works alongside ozone systems found in many newer hot tubs.
  • Once-a-month shock — replaces weekly shocking schedule with monthly.
  • Cyanuric acid free — unlike stabilized chlorine programs, doesn't contribute to CYA buildup.
How It Works

Time-Released Bromine

The yellow Serene cartridge contains 150 grams of bromine in a Time Released formulation. As water flows past the cartridge in your floater or In-Line system, bromine releases at a steady, controlled rate — instead of the sharp peak you get from a bromine tab dissolving in a traditional floater. The cartridge holds that consistent release for 2 to 4 weeks per cartridge, depending on your spa size, water temperature, and how often you soak.

The Adjustable Dial

Each yellow cartridge has a release dial on top. The standard starting point is setting 3 — install the cartridge, test your bromine level after a day or two, and adjust up or down from there. Most hot tubs find their sweet spot between settings 2 and 4. Hot weather, heavier use, or a larger spa pushes the dial higher; cooler weather, light use, or a smaller spa allows a lower setting.

Why Bromine for Hot Tubs

Bromine is a popular hot tub sanitizer specifically because it stays effective at higher water temperatures better than chlorine does, and it produces much less of the harsh "chlorine smell" that bothers many bathers. Pair bromine with FROG minerals (the blue cartridge), and the combined system needs even less bromine to keep water clean — exactly the Serene system's design.

Pro Tip: Start at Dial Setting 3— When you snap in a fresh bromine cartridge, set the dial to 3 as your starting point. Test bromine level with FROG test strips after a couple of days. If the reading is below your target 1–3 ppm range, turn the dial up by one. If it's above, turn it down by one. After a couple of adjustment cycles you'll know your spa's perfect setting and can leave it there from then on.

Directions for Use
  1. Balance your water first. Keep pH (7.2–7.8), Total Alkalinity (80–120 ppm), and Total Hardness in their normal ranges.
  2. Confirm your blue mineral cartridge is in place. The Serene system needs both cartridges working together; bromine alone won't deliver the 50% reduction the system is designed for.
  3. Insert the yellow bromine cartridge into your Serene Floating System or In-Line holder. Set the bromine output dial to 3 as a starting point.
  4. Place the dispenser in your spa (floating system) or close the cap on your In-Line port. Let the water circulate.
  5. Test bromine level after 1–2 days with a FROG test strip. Target range: 1–3 ppm. Adjust the bromine dial up or down based on the reading.
  6. Replace the bromine cartridge every 2–4 weeks depending on use. You'll typically use about 3 bromine cartridges per mineral cartridge.
  7. Shock monthly. Add a monthly oxidizing shock (such as FROG Maintain) to keep water fresh and clear, following your shock product's label dosing.

Pro Tip: Follow the Label First— Always follow the instructions printed on your spa's manual and the cartridge packaging — they take precedence over any general guidance. Spa size, bather load, and water source all affect how quickly the cartridge is consumed.

Compatibility

Works with both:

  • FROG Serene Floating System — the dispenser that floats freely in your spa (sold separately)
  • FROG In-Line System — factory-installed on many hot tub brands, including Bullfrog, Caldera, Cal Spas, Catalina, Coast, Emerald, Hot Spot, Hot Spring, Leisure Bay, Marquis, Morgan, Pacific, Saratoga, Watkins, and others

Spa size: Hot tubs 150–600 gallons.

This cartridge is not interchangeable with:

  • FROG @ease (SmartChlor®) cartridges — @ease runs on chlorine, not bromine. Different cartridge color, different chemistry, not compatible.
  • FROG @ease Swim Spa cartridges — those are larger and built for swim spa volume.
  • Flippin' Frog or INSTANT FROG pool cartridges — pool products use different sizes and different chemistry.

Not sure if you have a Serene or @ease system? The simplest tell is cartridge color and what's already in your spa. Serene uses a blue mineral cartridge and yellow bromine cartridges — bromine-based chemistry. @ease uses different colors with a SmartChlor® chlorine cartridge instead of bromine. If your current cartridges are yellow and blue, you're on the Serene system and this is the right replacement. Our team can help you confirm before you order — just reach out.

FROG® Brand FAQs

What makes FROG® different from regular chlorine or bromine?

FROG uses minerals as a first line of defense, which lets it sanitize with a much lower level of chlorine or bromine than traditional systems. Minerals and sanitizer work together to keep water clean two ways at once. The payoff for you is water that feels softer, has little to no chemical smell, and takes far less hands-on maintenance.

What is "Fresh Mineral Water®"?

It's FROG's term for the water its systems create: cleaner, clearer, softer, and easier to maintain. The minerals condition the water and help hold pH steady, while the reduced sanitizer level handles the rest — so you get sparkling water that's gentler on skin, hair, and swimwear than heavily chlorinated water.

Do FROG® cartridges really reduce how much chlorine I use?

Yes. Because the minerals do part of the sanitizing work, FROG® systems need significantly less chlorine or bromine to keep water clean. The @ease line with SmartChlor® Technology, for example, can use a fraction of the chlorine of a conventional hot tub program while still keeping the water properly sanitized.

How do the pre-filled cartridges work?

Each FROG® cartridge comes pre-filled with the right mineral or sanitizer formula — there's nothing to measure or mix. You simply drop or snap the cartridge into its holder or dispenser, set it, and let it do the work as water circulates. When a cartridge is spent, you swap in a fresh one. That's the "no mess, no guess, no stress" approach
FROG® is known for.

Will FROG® products work with my pool, hot tub, or swim spa?

FROG® makes systems for all three, in sizes ranging from small hot tubs to large in-ground pools, so there's almost always a fit. Some products are model-specific (for example, @ease cartridges sized for particular spa brands), so it's worth confirming the right version for your equipment. If you're unsure which FROG® product matches your setup, reach out and we'll help you pin it down.

How often do I replace the cartridges, and do I still need to shock?

Replacement timing depends on the product and your usage — mineral cartridges generally last for months, while sanitizer cartridges are swapped more often (the system's indicator tells you when). You'll still add a periodic shock to keep water freshly oxidized, but typically far less often than a fully manual program requires. Always follow the schedule printed on your specific product's packaging.

About Frog®

For more than 25 years, FROG® has been making pool, hot tub, and swim spa care dramatically simpler — without asking owners to compromise on water quality. Made by King Technology, FROG built its reputation on one patented idea: combine the natural cleaning power of minerals with a low, steady level of sanitizer, so your water stays clean using far less chlorine or bromine than traditional methods.

The result is what FROG calls Fresh Mineral Water® — water that's cleaner because it fights bacteria two ways (minerals plus a low level of sanitizer), clearer because balanced minerals help hold pH steady, and softer because those same minerals condition the water for a gentler feel on your skin. And it's easier, because nearly everything comes in pre-filled, drop-in cartridges. No measuring, no mess, no guesswork.

That convenience-first philosophy runs through the entire FROG lineup — from the SmartChlor®-powered @ease systems for hot tubs and swim spas, to the bromine-based Serene line, to the POOL FROG and Flippin' FROG systems for pools of every size, plus a full range of support chemicals and problem-solvers. Whatever you're sanitizing, there's a FROG product sized for it, and they're all built around the same goal: less time on maintenance, more time enjoying the water.
