Description

FROG® Maintain - 16 oz. is the bulk-container version of FROG's non-chlorine maintenance shock. Same chemistry, same use case, and same 15-minute reentry as the single-pouch 2 oz version — just packaged as a value-size container that gives you roughly eight shock doses for a standard 250-gallon hot tub instead of one.

The 16 oz container is the smarter buy if you actually use FROG® Maintain on the recommended schedule. Most spa owners shock monthly, plus after heavier use — so a 16 oz container at one 2 oz dose per shock covers roughly 8 months for a typical 250-gallon hot tub. The single-pouch version is great for trying the product, traveling, or as a one-time buy. The bulk container is what you want as your standing supply.

Chemistry-wise it's still chlorine-free MPS-based shock — Potassium Peroxymonosulfate, the same active ingredient as the 2 oz pouch. That means no cyanuric acid added to your water, no chlorine smell after dosing, and a 15-minute reentry time instead of the hours you'd wait after a dichlor shock. The bulk size doesn't change any of that — it just lets you stop reordering single pouches every month.

Why Bulk Pays Off: Per ounce, the 16 oz container costs roughly 60% less than the 2 oz single pouches. If you're going to shock monthly anyway (which is the recommended cadence on any spa), the math of a single 16 oz container is much better than buying eight single pouches over the same eight months. Same product, same chemistry, much better cost-per-shock.

FROG®

What's in the Box
  • 1 x FROG® Maintain — 16 oz bulk container (approximately 8 standard 2 oz shock doses for a 250-gallon hot tub)

Note: The 16 oz container is bulk — you measure out the dose for each use rather than getting a pre-measured single-dose pouch. A simple measuring scoop or kitchen scale works for accurate dosing. Cap tightly between uses and store in a cool, dry place.

Key Features
  • Value-size container — roughly eight 2 oz shock doses per container, far cheaper per ounce than single pouches.
  • Non-chlorine shock — uses MPS chemistry to oxidize without adding chlorine to your water.
  • Cyanuric acid free — won't contribute to CYA buildup that gradually reduces sanitizer effectiveness.
  • 15-minute reentry — much faster than chlorine shocks that require hours of waiting.
  • Works with any sanitizer — compatible with chlorine, bromine, ozone, biguanide, and FROG @ease.
  • Fast-dissolving — quickly disperses in the water and starts oxidizing immediately.
  • Restores sparkle — removes the dull, hazy, or "tired" look that develops between water changes.
How It Works

What "Shocking" Actually Does

The word "shock" makes it sound aggressive, but oxidizing shock is really just a high-dose oxidation event. Your normal sanitizer is constantly killing bacteria, but it's not strong enough to fully oxidize the accumulating non-living waste — body oils, sweat, hair products, and other organic compounds that bathers introduce. A shock dose temporarily floods the water with oxidizing power that breaks those compounds down into harmless byproducts that filter out or evaporate.

Why Non-Chlorine

Traditional dichlor shocks do this job by adding a high dose of chlorine — which works, but has trade-offs. Dichlor contributes cyanuric acid (CYA) to your water with every dose, and CYA gradually builds up to levels that reduce your sanitizer's effectiveness. It also adds a chlorine spike that requires hours of wait time before soaking. FROG Maintain skips both problems by using MPS (Potassium Peroxymonosulfate) — a different oxidizer that does the cleaning work without adding chlorine or CYA, and clears the water in roughly 15 minutes.

Bulk vs. Single-Pouch — Same Product

The 16 oz container and the 2 oz pouches contain the exact same MPS formulation. The only difference is packaging: the pouches are pre-measured for one dose each, while the bulk container lets you measure out your own doses (2 oz per 250 gallons for standard shocks, 4 oz per 250 gallons for the Reserve & Renew bromine bank). If you're regular about shocking, bulk wins on price; if you only shock occasionally, pouches keep the math simple.

Pro Tip: Shock After Heavy Use— Don't wait for the monthly schedule if you had a big group in the spa over the weekend. After heavy bather load — say, four or more people for a long soak — a fresh shock dose the next day prevents the cloudy water and "tired" smell that often shows up two or three days later. With a 16 oz container on hand, you can shock on demand without thinking about cost-per-use.

Directions for Use

Standard maintenance shock (most common use):

  1. Turn the filtration system on.
  2. Remove the spa cover so oxidation byproducts can escape.
  3. Measure out 2 oz of FROG Maintain per 250 gallons of water. A measuring scoop or kitchen scale gives the most accurate dose.
  4. Sprinkle across the water surface.
  5. Circulate the water for 15 minutes with the cover off.
  6. Test water with a test strip and resume normal use when sanitizer levels are in their normal range.

Bromine Reserve & Renew system (bromine spas only):

  1. Treat water with Metal Gon stain and scale treatment first (separate product).
  2. Add 4 oz of FROG Maintain per 250 gallons.
  3. Turn jets on and circulate the spa water for 30 minutes.
  4. Test bromine residual. Target range: 1–3 ppm.

Pro Tip: Cap Tight, Store Dry— MPS is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air, which can cause the granules to clump or harden in the container. After each use, press the air out of the container if possible, cap it tightly, and store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. A container kept dry will deliver consistent doses for the full eight shocks.

Compatibility

Works with all major spa sanitizer types:

  • Chlorine systems (a great way to shock without adding more chlorine or CYA)
  • Bromine systems (works as either a standard shock or a Reserve & Renew bromine reactivator)
  • Ozone systems
  • Biguanide systems
  • FROG® @ease SmartChlor® systems — the recommended monthly shock for @ease owners (matches the @ease "shock only once a month" maintenance cycle)

Dose: 2 oz per 250 gallons of spa water for a standard maintenance shock. The 16 oz container provides approximately 8 such doses.

Running FROG @ease? Monthly shocking is the second half of the @ease maintenance cycle — the cartridges handle daily sanitizing, and a monthly shock handles oxidation. FROG Maintain is the cleanest fit since it doesn't disrupt the SmartChlor® balance the way an extra dichlor dose would.

FROG® Brand FAQs

What makes FROG® different from regular chlorine or bromine?

FROG uses minerals as a first line of defense, which lets it sanitize with a much lower level of chlorine or bromine than traditional systems. Minerals and sanitizer work together to keep water clean two ways at once. The payoff for you is water that feels softer, has little to no chemical smell, and takes far less hands-on maintenance.

What is "Fresh Mineral Water®"?

It's FROG's term for the water its systems create: cleaner, clearer, softer, and easier to maintain. The minerals condition the water and help hold pH steady, while the reduced sanitizer level handles the rest — so you get sparkling water that's gentler on skin, hair, and swimwear than heavily chlorinated water.

Do FROG® cartridges really reduce how much chlorine I use?

Yes. Because the minerals do part of the sanitizing work, FROG® systems need significantly less chlorine or bromine to keep water clean. The @ease line with SmartChlor® Technology, for example, can use a fraction of the chlorine of a conventional hot tub program while still keeping the water properly sanitized.

How do the pre-filled cartridges work?

Each FROG® cartridge comes pre-filled with the right mineral or sanitizer formula — there's nothing to measure or mix. You simply drop or snap the cartridge into its holder or dispenser, set it, and let it do the work as water circulates. When a cartridge is spent, you swap in a fresh one. That's the "no mess, no guess, no stress" approach
FROG® is known for.

Will FROG® products work with my pool, hot tub, or swim spa?

FROG® makes systems for all three, in sizes ranging from small hot tubs to large in-ground pools, so there's almost always a fit. Some products are model-specific (for example, @ease cartridges sized for particular spa brands), so it's worth confirming the right version for your equipment. If you're unsure which FROG® product matches your setup, reach out and we'll help you pin it down.

How often do I replace the cartridges, and do I still need to shock?

Replacement timing depends on the product and your usage — mineral cartridges generally last for months, while sanitizer cartridges are swapped more often (the system's indicator tells you when). You'll still add a periodic shock to keep water freshly oxidized, but typically far less often than a fully manual program requires. Always follow the schedule printed on your specific product's packaging.

About Frog®

For more than 25 years, FROG® has been making pool, hot tub, and swim spa care dramatically simpler — without asking owners to compromise on water quality. Made by King Technology, FROG built its reputation on one patented idea: combine the natural cleaning power of minerals with a low, steady level of sanitizer, so your water stays clean using far less chlorine or bromine than traditional methods.

The result is what FROG calls Fresh Mineral Water® — water that's cleaner because it fights bacteria two ways (minerals plus a low level of sanitizer), clearer because balanced minerals help hold pH steady, and softer because those same minerals condition the water for a gentler feel on your skin. And it's easier, because nearly everything comes in pre-filled, drop-in cartridges. No measuring, no mess, no guesswork.

That convenience-first philosophy runs through the entire FROG lineup — from the SmartChlor®-powered @ease systems for hot tubs and swim spas, to the bromine-based Serene line, to the POOL FROG and Flippin' FROG systems for pools of every size, plus a full range of support chemicals and problem-solvers. Whatever you're sanitizing, there's a FROG product sized for it, and they're all built around the same goal: less time on maintenance, more time enjoying the water.
