Description

FROG® Algae Gone™ is a fast-acting, copper-based algaecide that cures existing green and yellow algae outbreaks in pool water. Drop the pods in your skimmer, run the pump for 24 hours, and the copper-based formula gets to work breaking down algae colonies and returning your pool to crystal clear. One package treats pools up to 30,000 gallons (one pod per 10,000 gallons).

This is the "fix it now" product in the FROG Pool Pods algae line. If you've just opened your pool to find green water staring back, or you've returned from vacation to walls coated in algae, Algae Gone is what gets you back to a usable pool in days rather than weeks of shocking, brushing, and waiting. The copper-based chemistry directly attacks the algae that's already established — different work from preventing new algae from forming.

What makes Algae Gone different from a traditional liquid algaecide is the application format. Instead of pouring measured doses around the pool perimeter (and worrying about staining the deck), you drop a pre-filled fabric pod into your skimmer. The dry concentrated formula dissolves over 24 hours, distributing copper through the pool's circulation system at exactly the right rate. No measuring, no spills, no perimeter pouring.

Why Speed Matters With Algae: Algae grows exponentially once it's established. A small patch on a step today becomes a wall-coating bloom by next weekend, and a green pool by the weekend after that. The faster you treat an outbreak, the less product you'll need and the less time your pool will be unusable. Algae Gone's 24-hour treatment cycle is much faster than the multi-week recovery a heavy shock-and-brush program typically requires.

What's in the Box
  • 3 x FROG® Algae Gone Pool Pods — treats pools up to 30,000 gallons (1 pod per 10,000 gallons)
  • 1 x Desiccant Packet (inside outer packaging) — keeps the pods dry until use

Note: Use the appropriate number of pods for your pool size in a single application — this is a one-time treatment, not a 90-day cycle product. For a 30,000-gallon pool with an outbreak, use all three pods. For a 20,000-gallon pool, use two. For a 10,000-gallon pool, use one and save the rest for a future outbreak or a friend's pool.

How It Works

Copper as an Algae Killer

Copper has been used as an algaecide for decades because it's exceptionally effective at killing established algae colonies. Copper ions disrupt the cellular processes algae cells need to survive — they essentially shut down the algae's biology. Within 24 hours of proper dosing, the algae colony begins to die, lose its color, and lose its grip on pool surfaces. Algae Gone's copper is in a chelated, slow-release form that releases gradually rather than dumping the whole dose at once — which prevents staining and gives the copper time to circulate evenly.

Pre and Post Treatment

For best results, brush the pool walls and floor before applying Algae Gone. Algae has a protective outer layer that brushing breaks down — making the algae much more vulnerable to the copper that's about to circulate. After the 24-hour treatment, vacuum the dead algae off the pool floor and clean or backwash your filter to remove the captured debris. What's left should be clear water.

Three Algae Defenses, Each Doing Different Work

If you're shopping for algae control, it helps to understand how the FROG Pool Pods line handles algae from three different angles:

  • FROG Algae Gone — this product, treats existing algae outbreaks (the "fix it now" product)
  • FROG 90-Day Algae Barrier — prevents algae from forming with a copper barrier
  • FROG 90-Day GoodBye Phos — starves algae by removing its food source (phosphates)

The most common pattern is: use Algae Gone first to cure an active outbreak, then switch to Algae Barrier (after a 2-week wait) to prevent the next outbreak. Once you're in maintenance mode, GoodBye Phos can be added to your routine to remove the food source algae spores need to grow at all.

Pro Tip: Brush Before Dosing— Before dropping the pod into the skimmer, brush your pool walls and floor thoroughly. Algae colonies have a protective outer layer that resists chemical attack — breaking that layer with mechanical brushing makes the copper inside the pod far more effective. Spending 10 minutes brushing can cut your recovery time significantly.

Directions for Use

Before applying FROG Algae Gone:

  1. Test your water for metals. If copper levels are elevated or other metals are high, address those first.
  2. Balance your water. pH 7.2–7.8. Low pH can cause copper to oxidize and stain pool surfaces, so balance is critical before dosing.
  3. Brush the pool walls and floor to break down the algae's protective outer layer. This step is genuinely important — it can cut your treatment time substantially.
  4. Empty the skimmer basket and pump basket of debris.

Applying the pods:

  1. Place the appropriate number of pods in the skimmer basket based on your pool size: 1 pod per 10,000 gallons. A 30,000-gallon pool uses all three pods; a 20,000-gallon pool uses two; a 10,000-gallon pool uses one.
  2. Run pump and filter continuously for 24 hours to ensure the pods fully dispense and the copper circulates throughout the pool.
  3. Do not add chlorine or other chemicals into the skimmer or pump basket during the first 24 hours. This would interfere with the pod's dispersion.
  4. After 24 hours, vacuum the pool to remove dead algae from the pool floor.
  5. Clean or backwash your filter to remove captured algae debris.
  6. Remove the empty pods from the skimmer (they typically float to the top once dispensed) and discard in the trash (or recycle the fabric if your area accepts it).
  7. To prevent future outbreaks, wait 2 weeks, then apply FROG 90-Day Algae Barrier to maintain ongoing protection. This is the manufacturer's recommended approach to keeping algae out long-term.

Pro Tip: Follow the Label First— Always follow the safety instructions printed on the Algae Gone pouch — they take precedence over any general guidance. Keep pods sealed in their packaging until use, store in a cool dry place, and keep out of reach of children and pets.

About Black Algae: Algae Gone is specifically formulated to cure green and yellow algae outbreaks — the two most common types in residential pools. Black algae is a tougher, more deeply-rooted strain that often requires specialized treatment beyond a standard copper algaecide. If you're seeing dark black or blue-black spots that resist normal cleaning, give us a call before treating — black algae usually needs a specific product and approach.

FROG® Brand FAQs

What makes FROG® different from regular chlorine or bromine?

FROG uses minerals as a first line of defense, which lets it sanitize with a much lower level of chlorine or bromine than traditional systems. Minerals and sanitizer work together to keep water clean two ways at once. The payoff for you is water that feels softer, has little to no chemical smell, and takes far less hands-on maintenance.

What is "Fresh Mineral Water®"?

It's FROG's term for the water its systems create: cleaner, clearer, softer, and easier to maintain. The minerals condition the water and help hold pH steady, while the reduced sanitizer level handles the rest — so you get sparkling water that's gentler on skin, hair, and swimwear than heavily chlorinated water.

Do FROG® cartridges really reduce how much chlorine I use?

Yes. Because the minerals do part of the sanitizing work, FROG® systems need significantly less chlorine or bromine to keep water clean. The @ease line with SmartChlor® Technology, for example, can use a fraction of the chlorine of a conventional hot tub program while still keeping the water properly sanitized.

How do the pre-filled cartridges work?

Each FROG® cartridge comes pre-filled with the right mineral or sanitizer formula — there's nothing to measure or mix. You simply drop or snap the cartridge into its holder or dispenser, set it, and let it do the work as water circulates. When a cartridge is spent, you swap in a fresh one. That's the "no mess, no guess, no stress" approach
FROG® is known for.

Will FROG® products work with my pool, hot tub, or swim spa?

FROG® makes systems for all three, in sizes ranging from small hot tubs to large in-ground pools, so there's almost always a fit. Some products are model-specific (for example, @ease cartridges sized for particular spa brands), so it's worth confirming the right version for your equipment. If you're unsure which FROG® product matches your setup, reach out and we'll help you pin it down.

How often do I replace the cartridges, and do I still need to shock?

Replacement timing depends on the product and your usage — mineral cartridges generally last for months, while sanitizer cartridges are swapped more often (the system's indicator tells you when). You'll still add a periodic shock to keep water freshly oxidized, but typically far less often than a fully manual program requires. Always follow the schedule printed on your specific product's packaging.

About Frog®

For more than 25 years, FROG® has been making pool, hot tub, and swim spa care dramatically simpler — without asking owners to compromise on water quality. Made by King Technology, FROG built its reputation on one patented idea: combine the natural cleaning power of minerals with a low, steady level of sanitizer, so your water stays clean using far less chlorine or bromine than traditional methods.

The result is what FROG calls Fresh Mineral Water® — water that's cleaner because it fights bacteria two ways (minerals plus a low level of sanitizer), clearer because balanced minerals help hold pH steady, and softer because those same minerals condition the water for a gentler feel on your skin. And it's easier, because nearly everything comes in pre-filled, drop-in cartridges. No measuring, no mess, no guesswork.

That convenience-first philosophy runs through the entire FROG lineup — from the SmartChlor®-powered @ease systems for hot tubs and swim spas, to the bromine-based Serene line, to the POOL FROG and Flippin' FROG systems for pools of every size, plus a full range of support chemicals and problem-solvers. Whatever you're sanitizing, there's a FROG product sized for it, and they're all built around the same goal: less time on maintenance, more time enjoying the water.
