Description

SpaPure Salt Start is a specialty blend of salt and water-softening ingredients made for spas running a salt chlorine generator (SCG). It's the salt you add to establish the salinity your system needs to make chlorine — but it's more than plain salt: the softening ingredients make the water easier to maintain and gentler on your equipment than salt alone.

A salt system doesn't sanitize without salt in the water. The generator works by converting dissolved salt into chlorine, so the right salinity is the foundation of the whole system. Use too little and the cell can't produce chlorine; use the wrong kind of salt and you risk impurities that stain surfaces or shorten cell life. Salt Start gives the generator clean, spa-grade salt at the level it's designed for — plus softening additives that help prevent stains and scale and extend the life of the salt cell, the most expensive part of a salt system.

The result is a salt-water spa that's even easier to maintain, with silky water and protected equipment.

Pro Tip: Don't use water-softener or table salt as a substitute. The salt you buy for a home softener can carry anti-caking agents, iron, and other impurities that stain a spa shell and damage a salt cell — the very things a salt cell is most sensitive to. Spa-grade salt like Salt Start is purified for this exact use, which is cheap insurance for an expensive cell.

How It Works

SpaPure Salt Start is for spas equipped with a salt chlorine generator, and it works with all brands of salt system. It's specifically the startup/maintenance salt for that setup — it isn't a sanitizer or balancer on its own; it's the raw material your generator turns into sanitizer.

It works alongside the rest of your routine: balance pH and total alkalinity before and during salt startup, use salt test strips (and your generator's own readout) to confirm salinity, and keep up your pH balancers and stain & scale protection as usual. Always check your spa or salt-system operator's manual for the exact salinity target, since it varies by system.A salt chlorine generator makes chlorine through electrolysis: dissolved salt (sodium chloride) passes over the cell's electrodes, and the electrical current splits it into pure chlorine that sanitizes the water on demand. After the chlorine does its job, it reverts back to salt — so the salt is continually reused rather than consumed. That's why you "charge" the water with salt once and only top it up occasionally.

Salt Start supplies that salt at spa-grade purity, plus softening ingredients that keep dissolved minerals from depositing as scale on the cell and surfaces. Because the salt level directly drives how much chlorine the cell can produce, getting it to the generator's target ppm is what makes the whole system run correctly.

Pro Tip: Add salt gradually and test as you go — you can always add more, but you can't remove it without draining. Salinity is stable once set (the salt is recycled, not used up), so add part of the calculated amount, let it dissolve and circulate, test, and work up to your generator's target. Overshooting means diluting with fresh water to bring it back down.

Directions for Use

Always confirm your system's target salinity before dosing — requirements vary by generator. For reference, 1 dry measuring cup = 2 pounds.

  1. Review the operator's manual of your spa or salt chlorine generator for the total amount of salt needed, in parts-per-million (ppm), for the device to operate correctly.
  2. Calculate the total amount of product needed using the dosing charts on the label for your spa's gallons and target ppm.
  3. With the pump running, slowly add the product directly to the spa water.
  4. Brush any unsettled material off the surfaces so it dissolves rather than resting on the shell.
  5. Check salt (salinity) levels once a month and top up as needed.

Pro Tip: Balance and dissolve before you switch the generator on. Make sure the salt is fully dissolved and your salinity reads in range before relying on the cell to produce chlorine — running a generator before the salt is dissolved gives a false low reading and can have you adding more than you actually need.

SpaPure® Brand FAQs

What is SpaPure, and who makes it?

SpaPure is a line of spa and hot tub water care products from Haviland Pool & Spa, a 100% employee-owned American manufacturer with more than 55 years of pool and spa experience. Haviland's Pool & Spa division began in 1968 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and all SpaPure products are made in the USA.

Is SpaPure formulated specifically for spas, or is it pool chemicals in smaller bottles?

SpaPure is engineered specifically for spas and hot tubs. Spa water is a different challenge from pool water — far less volume, a much higher bather load per gallon, and hotter temperatures that accelerate everything. SpaPure's formulas are concentrated and dosed for that environment rather than scaled-down pool products.

Can I use SpaPure products with my chlorine, bromine, or salt water system?

Yes. SpaPure makes products for chlorine, bromine, and salt/mineral programs, plus balancers, shocks, clarifiers, and specialty treatments that work alongside any of them. Match the sanitizer-specific products to your system, and use the balancers and oxidizers regardless of which sanitizer you run. If you're not sure what fits your setup, a quick water test will point you to the right products.

Why buy SpaPure from an authorized dealer like Leisure Time Inc.?

Buying from an authorized dealer means you get fresh, correctly stored product — spa chemicals degrade with age and poor storage — backed by people who can actually help you use it. Leisure Time Inc. has carried spa water care for decades, and our team can match products to your specific spa and water chemistry. Chemicals sold far below market price on third-party marketplaces are often expired, mishandled, or gray-market, with no support behind them.

Why do some SpaPure products ship ground only and can't be returned by mail?

Certain spa chemicals — chlorine and bromine products, oxidizers, and some acids — are classified as hazardous materials by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Federal regulations require them to ship by ground rather than air and prohibit consumers from mailing them back. Products with this restriction are noted on the product page. If you have unopened chemicals you no longer need, you can return them in person at one of our showrooms or contact us about your options.

How do I know which SpaPure products my spa needs?

Start with a water test. Testing tells you what your water actually needs instead of guessing — which sanitizer level to adjust, whether to balance pH or alkalinity, and when to shock. You can test at home with SpaPure test strips, or bring a water sample to any Leisure Time showroom for free in-store testing and a product recommendation. You can also call us and we'll walk you through it.

About SpaPure®

SpaPure is a spa-specific water care brand made by Haviland Pool & Spa, a 100% employee-owned American company with more than 55 years in pool and spa chemistry. Haviland's Pool & Spa division began in 1968 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as one of the early pioneers of modern pool and spa treatments, and today produces over 100 products across eight in-house brands. Because Haviland is employee-owned through an ESOP, the people who make and stand behind SpaPure have a direct stake in whether your water turns out right.

SpaPure is built specifically for spas and hot tubs — concentrated, fast-acting formulas designed for the small water volumes and high bather loads that make spa water harder to keep balanced than pool water. The line covers the full routine: sanitizing, shock and oxidation, water balance, clarifiers and enzymes, stain and scale control, and salt-system support — all proudly made in the USA.
