Description

SpaGuard Stain & Scale Control protects your spa's shell from two of the most common and frustrating sources of damage: metal staining and calcium scale. It's designed to both prevent and remove staining, and to keep scale from forming in the first place — so your spa stays clean, smooth, and looking new.

Metals like iron, manganese, and copper find their way into spa water through your fill source, and once they're there they can stain the shell with stubborn discoloration. Separately, when calcium levels run high, scale builds up as a rough, crusty deposit on surfaces and equipment. Stain & Scale Control tackles both: it keeps metals locked up and harmless so they can't stain, and it helps prevent calcium scale from depositing on the shell of your hot tub. The result is a cleaner spa, protected surfaces, and far less scrubbing.

Used at start-up and as part of weekly maintenance, it's simple insurance against permanent staining and scale damage. Available in two sizes — a 1 pint bottle and a 1 quart bottle for owners who want a longer-lasting supply.

Pro Tip: The best time to add Stain & Scale Control is right when you refill your spa with fresh water — especially if you fill from a well or a source with hard or high-metal water. Locking up metals and excess calcium from the start prevents stains and scale before they ever have a chance to form.

What's in the Box

Available in two sizes — choose your size at checkout:

  • 1 x SpaGuard Stain & Scale Control — 1 Pint (16 oz liquid)
  • 1 x SpaGuard Stain & Scale Control — 1 Quart (32 oz liquid)

Note: Both sizes are the identical formula — only the bottle quantity differs. The dose is 1 oz per 300 gallons, so even the pint treats many fills. Keep the bottle tightly sealed and store in a cool, dry place away from other chemicals.

Key Features
  • Prevents and removes metal stains — controls iron, manganese, and copper so they can't discolor the shell.
  • Prevents calcium scale — stops scale from high calcium levels building up on spa surfaces.
  • Protects your spa shell — keeps surfaces clean, smooth, and looking new.
  • Ideal at fresh fill — locks up metals and excess minerals from the start, especially with well or hard water.
  • Simple weekly maintenance — easy 1 oz per 300 gallon dose keeps protection topped up.
  • Works with every common sanitizing system — chlorine, bromine, ozone, and biguanide.
How It Works

Stains and scale both start with dissolved minerals in the water. Metals like iron, manganese, and copper can drop out of solution and bond to the spa surface as discoloration; calcium, when it's too concentrated, crystallizes into hard scale on shells and equipment. Once either one deposits on the surface, it's difficult to remove without aggressive scrubbing or specialty treatments.

SpaGuard Stain & Scale Control works as a sequestering agent — it chemically grabs hold of those dissolved metals and excess minerals and keeps them bound up in the water, where they stay suspended and harmless instead of depositing on surfaces. Because the metals and calcium are held in solution, they can't stain or form scale, and the filter and normal water changes carry them away over time. Used regularly, it keeps that protection continuous.

Pro Tip: Stain & Scale Control manages the metals and excess minerals; your calcium balance manages the rest. If your water is too soft (low calcium), that's a different problem — corrosion and foam — handled by SpaGuard Calcium Hardness Increaser. Stain & Scale Control is your tool for staining and high-calcium scale.

Directions for Use

Start-Up

  1. Dip a chlorine test strip in the spa water.
  2. Compare the results using the chart on the back of the bottle.
  3. Add 1 oz of Stain & Scale Control per 300 gallons of water.
  4. Circulate the spa or hot tub water for 1 hour.

Weekly Maintenance

  1. Using spa test strips, test your spa's water and adjust when needed.
  2. Add 1 oz of Stain & Scale Control per 300 gallons of water.
  3. Ideal total alkalinity range: 80–120 ppm.
  4. Ideal pH range: 7.2–7.8.

Pro Tip: Keep your water balanced while you protect it. Stain & Scale Control works best with alkalinity at 80–120 ppm and pH in range — out-of-balance water makes both staining and scaling more likely, so the balancer and the protectant work hand in hand.

SpaGuard® Brand FAQs

What is SpaGuard?

SpaGuard is a professional-grade brand of spa and hot tub water care products — sanitizers, shocks, balancers, and water enhancers — formulated specifically for spas rather than adapted from pool chemicals. The line is designed to work together as a complete system for clean, clear, comfortable water.

Who makes SpaGuard?

SpaGuard is part of the BioGuard family of water care brands, a long-established name in pool and spa chemistry. That backing means the formulas are professionally developed and tested, with a reputation built over decades in the industry.

What water care systems does SpaGuard offer?

SpaGuard supports three complete care methods: a chlorine system, a bromine system, and the Soft Soak TRIO system. Each is a coordinated set of products, so you can match your routine to the sanitizer you prefer.

What makes SpaGuard different from generic spa chemicals?

SpaGuard products are engineered for the unique demands of hot, agitated, heavily used spa water, and they're built to work together as a system. That coordination delivers more reliable, repeatable results than mixing unrelated single products.

What is ALEX water testing?

ALEX is SpaGuard's exclusive computerized water-analysis tool used by its dealers. A quick water sample produces a precise read on your spa's chemistry and a tailored recommendation, taking the guesswork out of what to add and when.

Why buy SpaGuard from an authorized dealer?

SpaGuard dealers are trained on the brand's products and water-care technology, so you get expert advice alongside genuine product. They can run an ALEX analysis, troubleshoot issues, and recommend exactly what your water needs.

About SpaGuard®

SpaGuard is a professional-grade line of spa and hot tub water care products engineered specifically for spas — not pool chemicals repackaged for a smaller tub. Built around a simple, proven approach (balance the water, sanitize it, shock it, and keep it clear), SpaGuard products are formulated to work together as a system across three care methods: chlorine, bromine, and the Soft Soak TRIO system.

Because the formulas are made for the unique demands of hot, agitated, heavily used spa water, owners get reliable, repeatable results with less guesswork. SpaGuard is also backed by a trained dealer network and ALEX water-analysis tools, so when a water issue does come up, there's an expert-tested path to fixing it. It's a trusted choice for anyone who wants clean, comfortable, sparkling water with a maintenance routine they can actually keep up with.
