Description

FROG® 90-Day Algae Barrier™ is a proactive, copper-based algae preventer delivered in Drop 'n Go™ pods. Drop the pods in your pool skimmer at the start of the swim season, run the pump for 24 hours, and the barrier prevents green, yellow, and black algae from establishing in your pool for the next 90 days. One package treats pools up to 20,000 gallons.

Most pool owners encounter algae the wrong way: it shows up first, then you scramble to treat it. By the time you can see the green tint forming on a wall or floating in the water, the algae colony is already established and takes serious chemistry (and elbow grease) to clear. Algae Barrier flips the equation — it lays down a continuous copper-based protective layer that destroys algae spores before they can grow into the colonies that cause outbreaks. No green water to fight, no shock-and-brush emergencies, no pool closure during recovery.

The pods make application as simple as it gets. Drop them in the skimmer, walk away, and the dry concentrated formula dissolves over 24 hours, distributing through your pool's circulation. After that, the barrier is in place — undetectable to swimmers, but actively hostile to algae spores trying to take hold.

Why Prevention Beats Treatment: An algae bloom can take a pool offline for days. You have to shock heavily, brush every surface, run the filter constantly, vacuum the dead algae, and often clean or backwash the filter twice in a week. Buying back from a bloom typically costs more in chemicals and chlorine than a season of Algae Barrier — and it costs you swim days in the middle of summer. The cheapest, easiest algae you ever deal with is the algae that never forms.

Brand

FROG®

What's in the Box
  • 2 x FROG® 90-Day Algae Barrier Pool Pods — treats pools up to 20,000 gallons (1 pod per 10,000 gallons)
  • 1 x Desiccant Packet (inside the outer packaging, like the ones in medicine bottles) — keeps the pods dry until use

Note: Use both pods at the same time at the start of the 90-day treatment cycle. This product is not dosed monthly the way GoodBye Cloudy and GoodBye Phos are — a single multi-pod application creates a 90-day barrier, then you replace the whole dose at the end of the period.

Key Features
  • Drop 'n Go™ pods — pre-filled fabric pouches, no measuring or pouring.
  • 90 days of algae prevention — a single application covers a full pool season.
  • For pools up to 20,000 gallons — 1 pod per 10,000 gallons.
  • Prevents three algae types — green, yellow, and black algae, all blocked by the same copper-based barrier.
  • Copper-based active ingredient — chelated copper bound in a form that targets algae without staining when dosed correctly.
  • Dry concentrated formula — no liquid to spill, no risk of staining the deck or liner from a spill.
  • Pool maintenance product (not a sanitizer) — works alongside your existing chlorine, salt, or sanitizing system.
  • Desiccant included — pods stay dry until they go into the skimmer.
  • Compatible with chlorine, bromine, and salt pools.
How It Works

Copper as an Algaecide

Copper has been used in pool care for decades because it's exceptionally effective at killing algae. Copper ions disrupt the cellular processes algae need to grow, which means even spores that drift into your pool (from wind, rain, or swimmers) can't multiply into a visible bloom. Algae Barrier's copper is in a chelated, slow-release form — meaning it stays bound up safely in a stable chemical complex until it's needed, then releases gradually over 90 days.

How the Pod Distributes

The dry concentrated formula inside each fabric pod dissolves in your skimmer over about 24 hours, distributing copper throughout the pool's circulation system. For the first 24 hours after dosing, you run your pump continuously to ensure even distribution. After that, the barrier is in place and continues working at a low, steady level for the next 90 days. You won't see anything different in the water — copper at proper dosing is invisible and odorless — but algae spores entering the pool no longer have a chance to grow.

Three Algae Defenses, Each Doing Different Work

If you're shopping for algae prevention, it helps to understand how the FROG Pool Pods line handles algae from three different angles:

  • FROG Algae Gone — treats existing algae outbreaks (the "fix it now" product)
  • FROG 90-Day Algae Barrier — this product, prevents algae directly with a copper barrier
  • FROG 90-Day GoodBye Phos — starves algae by removing its food source (phosphates)

These products work in combination, not as alternatives. Many serious algae-prevention regimens use both Algae Barrier and GoodBye Phos — Phos removes the food, Algae Barrier kills any algae that try to grow anyway. Together they're a near-foolproof defense.

Pro Tip: Check Copper Levels First— Before adding Algae Barrier, test your pool for copper. If your existing copper level is at0.2 ppm or less, you're clear to apply. If copper is above 0.2 ppm or other metals are elevated, address those levels first (per your pool care plan) before adding more copper. Stacking copper on top of high existing copper can cause staining — exactly the problem Algae Barrier is designed to avoid.

Directions for Use

Before applying FROG 90-Day Algae Barrier:

  1. Ensure your pool equipment is working properly — pump, filter, skimmer, and heater. Good water flow is essential to the product working as designed.
  2. If you recently used FROG Algae Gone, wait at least 2 weeks before applying Algae Barrier (both contain copper).
  3. Clean or backwash your filter and remove all debris from skimmer and pump baskets.
  4. Confirm your filtration cycle is adequate. Plan to run your filter at least 8 hours per day during the 90-day treatment period.
  5. Balance your water. pH 7.2–7.8, Total Alkalinity 80–120 ppm, Cyanuric Acid 20–80 ppm.
  6. Test for metals. Have your water tested for copper and other metals. If copper is at 0.2 ppm or less, proceed. If copper or other metals are elevated, address those levels first before applying.
  7. Brush your pool walls and floor as part of your routine maintenance. Brushing breaks down any early algae colonies before the barrier goes in.

Applying the pods:

  1. Remove pods from outer packaging. Set aside the desiccant packet.
  2. Insert the correct number of pods into the skimmer basket: 1 pod per 10,000 gallons. (Two pods for a 20,000-gallon pool.)
  3. Run pump and filter continuously for the first 24 hours to fully dispense the pods and distribute copper throughout the pool.
  4. Do not add chlorine or other chemicals into the skimmer or pump basket during the first 24 hours. Wait until the pods have fully dispensed.
  5. Remove the empty pods after 24 hours and discard in the trash (or recycle if your area accepts the fabric).
  6. Don't backwash or clean the filter for at least 2 weeks after application.
  7. Maintain normal chlorine or sanitizer levels throughout the 90-day cycle.
  8. Run filtration at least 8 hours per day for ongoing algae prevention.
  9. Repeat every 90 days with fresh pods to continue algae prevention.

Pro Tip: Follow the Label First— Always follow the safety instructions printed on the Algae Barrier pouch — they take precedence over any general guidance. Keep pods sealed in their packaging until use, store in a cool dry place, and keep out of reach of children and pets.

Not recommended for:

  • Pools currently using a mineral-based sanitizer system (Flippin' Frog, INSTANT FROG, Pool Frog) — stacking copper algaecide on top of silver-mineral systems can lead to staining issues. Consult before combining.
  • Pools currently using other copper-based algaecides — adding more copper on top of existing copper risks staining.
  • Pools without a working skimmer (the pod needs to dissolve in the skimmer for proper distribution).
  • Hot tubs or swim spas — this is a pool-specific algaecide.

Stacking with Other FROG Pool Pods? If you've recently used FROG Algae Gone, wait at least 2 weeks before adding Algae Barrier. Both contain copper, and back-to-back applications can push copper levels too high. Algae Barrier and FROG 90-Day GoodBye Phos are different chemistries and can be applied closer together (still recommended 2 weeks apart) — that pair is the manufacturer's recommended one-two punch for serious algae prevention.

FROG® Brand FAQs

What makes FROG® different from regular chlorine or bromine?

FROG uses minerals as a first line of defense, which lets it sanitize with a much lower level of chlorine or bromine than traditional systems. Minerals and sanitizer work together to keep water clean two ways at once. The payoff for you is water that feels softer, has little to no chemical smell, and takes far less hands-on maintenance.

What is "Fresh Mineral Water®"?

It's FROG's term for the water its systems create: cleaner, clearer, softer, and easier to maintain. The minerals condition the water and help hold pH steady, while the reduced sanitizer level handles the rest — so you get sparkling water that's gentler on skin, hair, and swimwear than heavily chlorinated water.

Do FROG® cartridges really reduce how much chlorine I use?

Yes. Because the minerals do part of the sanitizing work, FROG® systems need significantly less chlorine or bromine to keep water clean. The @ease line with SmartChlor® Technology, for example, can use a fraction of the chlorine of a conventional hot tub program while still keeping the water properly sanitized.

How do the pre-filled cartridges work?

Each FROG® cartridge comes pre-filled with the right mineral or sanitizer formula — there's nothing to measure or mix. You simply drop or snap the cartridge into its holder or dispenser, set it, and let it do the work as water circulates. When a cartridge is spent, you swap in a fresh one. That's the "no mess, no guess, no stress" approach
FROG® is known for.

Will FROG® products work with my pool, hot tub, or swim spa?

FROG® makes systems for all three, in sizes ranging from small hot tubs to large in-ground pools, so there's almost always a fit. Some products are model-specific (for example, @ease cartridges sized for particular spa brands), so it's worth confirming the right version for your equipment. If you're unsure which FROG® product matches your setup, reach out and we'll help you pin it down.

How often do I replace the cartridges, and do I still need to shock?

Replacement timing depends on the product and your usage — mineral cartridges generally last for months, while sanitizer cartridges are swapped more often (the system's indicator tells you when). You'll still add a periodic shock to keep water freshly oxidized, but typically far less often than a fully manual program requires. Always follow the schedule printed on your specific product's packaging.

About Frog®

For more than 25 years, FROG® has been making pool, hot tub, and swim spa care dramatically simpler — without asking owners to compromise on water quality. Made by King Technology, FROG built its reputation on one patented idea: combine the natural cleaning power of minerals with a low, steady level of sanitizer, so your water stays clean using far less chlorine or bromine than traditional methods.

The result is what FROG calls Fresh Mineral Water® — water that's cleaner because it fights bacteria two ways (minerals plus a low level of sanitizer), clearer because balanced minerals help hold pH steady, and softer because those same minerals condition the water for a gentler feel on your skin. And it's easier, because nearly everything comes in pre-filled, drop-in cartridges. No measuring, no mess, no guesswork.

That convenience-first philosophy runs through the entire FROG lineup — from the SmartChlor®-powered @ease systems for hot tubs and swim spas, to the bromine-based Serene line, to the POOL FROG and Flippin' FROG systems for pools of every size, plus a full range of support chemicals and problem-solvers. Whatever you're sanitizing, there's a FROG product sized for it, and they're all built around the same goal: less time on maintenance, more time enjoying the water.
