Description

The FROG® @ease Swim Spa SmartChlor® Cartridge is the chlorine-generating cartridge built specifically for the FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas. It's the consumable half of the swim spa @ease pair — sized larger than hot tub cartridges to handle the much greater water volume of a swim spa, and engineered to release a steady, low level of self-regulating chlorine for weeks at a time.

Swim spa water care has its own challenges. With 1,500 to 3,000 gallons of water in play (versus the 150–600 gallons of a hot tub), the chlorine demand is higher, the math is harder, and the consequences of getting it wrong are bigger — you can't just drain and start over the way you can with a hot tub. The @ease swim spa system was built to take that pressure off owners by automating sanitizing the same way @ease automates hot tub care: minerals plus a low, self-regulating level of chlorine, no daily dosing, no weekly shocking.

This cartridge is also one of the few you can actually see working. The housing is translucent gray, which means you can look at the cartridge and see the SmartChlor® inside — a visual cue that complements the floating system's "flips over when empty" indicator. The chemistry is also cyanuric acid free, which matters in a large body of water like a swim spa where CYA buildup from traditional dichlor would gradually reduce sanitizer effectiveness over time.

Why Cyanuric Acid Free Matters in a Swim Spa: In a hot tub, you refill the water every 3–4 months — so CYA never gets a chance to build up. In a swim spa, you typically don't drain that often (1,500+ gallons of hot, treated water is a major operation), so any CYA you add stays in the water for the long haul. Over months, a traditional dichlor program can push CYA high enough to start blocking your sanitizer from working. SmartChlor® sidesteps that entirely.

What's in the Box
  • 1 x FROG® @ease Swim Spa SmartChlor® Cartridge (translucent gray housing)

Note: This is the SmartChlor® cartridge only. It requires the FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas (the floating dispenser) and works in tandem with the @ease Swim Spa Mineral Cartridge, which is replaced on its own longer schedule.

Key Features
  • Sized for swim spas — built for the larger water volume of a swim spa (typically 1,500–3,000 gallons), not interchangeable with hot tub cartridges.
  • Self-regulating chlorine — slowly releases over 3–4 weeks for a consistent free chlorine level instead of the spikes and dips of manual dosing.
  • Cyanuric acid free — won't contribute to the CYA buildup that affects long-term sanitizer effectiveness in low-drain-rate swim spas.
  • Up to 75% less chlorine — paired with FROG® minerals, uses a fraction of the chlorine of traditional water care.
  • Translucent gray housing — you can actually see the SmartChlor® inside the cartridge.
  • Built-in flip indicator — the floating system flips over when the cartridge runs out, giving you a visual cue.
  • Shock only once a month — versus the weekly shocking many manual programs require.
How It Works

The SmartChlor® Cartridge

The cartridge holds a reserve of SmartChlor® — a unique chlorine compound that releases gradually as the water flows past it. Unlike standard chlorine that gets used up in a burst, SmartChlor® self-regulates: it releases more when the active sanitizer level in your water drops, and pauses when the level is right. The result is a consistent low free chlorine level that holds steady for 3–4 weeks per cartridge.

Working with the Mineral Cartridge

SmartChlor® is designed to work only with FROG® minerals — they're chemically paired. In your @ease swim spa dispenser, this SmartChlor® cartridge snaps onto the swim spa mineral cartridge, and together they sanitize the water two ways: minerals as a first line of defense, SmartChlor® as the active chlorine. The mineral cartridge typically lasts up to 4 months, so you'll go through several SmartChlor® cartridges over the lifespan of one mineral cartridge.

The Flip Indicator

The floating @ease swim spa dispenser is designed so that as the SmartChlor® cartridge depletes, the floater becomes unbalanced and physically tips over in the water. When you see it flip, that's your visual cue to swap in a fresh cartridge. Combined with the translucent gray housing (which lets you see how much SmartChlor® is left visually), the system gives you two ways to tell when it's time for a replacement.

Pro Tip: Don't Toss a Half-Spent Cartridge— If the floater flips but the cartridge still shows SmartChlor® inside, drain the water out of the spent cartridge and shake it. If chlorine remains, place it back in the swim spa to float on its own until completely empty. You'll get every dose you paid for before the cartridge truly retires.

Directions for Use
  1. Watch for the flip. When the floating @ease system tips over in the swim spa, it's time to replace the SmartChlor® cartridge.
  2. Remove and separate. Rotate the SmartChlor® and mineral cartridges until the arrows align, then pull them apart.
  3. Check for remaining chlorine. Drain the water from the old SmartChlor® cartridge and shake it slightly. If it feels empty, follow disposal directions on the packaging.
  4. If chlorine remains, finish it out. Do not discard or recycle the cartridge if a small amount of chlorine remains — place it back in the swim spa to float on its own until completely empty.
  5. Insert a fresh SmartChlor® cartridge by snapping it onto the mineral cartridge per the system instructions.
  6. Return the floating dispenser to the swim spa and let it circulate.
  7. Replace every 3–4 weeks depending on use.
  8. Shock monthly. Add a monthly oxidizing shock to keep water fresh and clear, following your shock product's label dosing.
  9. Test regularly. Check sanitizer and pH a couple of times a week and after heavy use, adjusting as needed.

Pro Tip: Follow the Label First— Always follow the instructions printed on the @ease swim spa dispenser and cartridge packaging — they take precedence over any general guidance. Swim spa size, bather load, and water source all affect how quickly cartridges are consumed.

FROG® Brand FAQs

What makes FROG® different from regular chlorine or bromine?

FROG uses minerals as a first line of defense, which lets it sanitize with a much lower level of chlorine or bromine than traditional systems. Minerals and sanitizer work together to keep water clean two ways at once. The payoff for you is water that feels softer, has little to no chemical smell, and takes far less hands-on maintenance.

What is "Fresh Mineral Water®"?

It's FROG's term for the water its systems create: cleaner, clearer, softer, and easier to maintain. The minerals condition the water and help hold pH steady, while the reduced sanitizer level handles the rest — so you get sparkling water that's gentler on skin, hair, and swimwear than heavily chlorinated water.

Do FROG® cartridges really reduce how much chlorine I use?

Yes. Because the minerals do part of the sanitizing work, FROG® systems need significantly less chlorine or bromine to keep water clean. The @ease line with SmartChlor® Technology, for example, can use a fraction of the chlorine of a conventional hot tub program while still keeping the water properly sanitized.

How do the pre-filled cartridges work?

Each FROG® cartridge comes pre-filled with the right mineral or sanitizer formula — there's nothing to measure or mix. You simply drop or snap the cartridge into its holder or dispenser, set it, and let it do the work as water circulates. When a cartridge is spent, you swap in a fresh one. That's the "no mess, no guess, no stress" approach
FROG® is known for.

Will FROG® products work with my pool, hot tub, or swim spa?

FROG® makes systems for all three, in sizes ranging from small hot tubs to large in-ground pools, so there's almost always a fit. Some products are model-specific (for example, @ease cartridges sized for particular spa brands), so it's worth confirming the right version for your equipment. If you're unsure which FROG® product matches your setup, reach out and we'll help you pin it down.

How often do I replace the cartridges, and do I still need to shock?

Replacement timing depends on the product and your usage — mineral cartridges generally last for months, while sanitizer cartridges are swapped more often (the system's indicator tells you when). You'll still add a periodic shock to keep water freshly oxidized, but typically far less often than a fully manual program requires. Always follow the schedule printed on your specific product's packaging.

About Frog®

For more than 25 years, FROG® has been making pool, hot tub, and swim spa care dramatically simpler — without asking owners to compromise on water quality. Made by King Technology, FROG built its reputation on one patented idea: combine the natural cleaning power of minerals with a low, steady level of sanitizer, so your water stays clean using far less chlorine or bromine than traditional methods.

The result is what FROG calls Fresh Mineral Water® — water that's cleaner because it fights bacteria two ways (minerals plus a low level of sanitizer), clearer because balanced minerals help hold pH steady, and softer because those same minerals condition the water for a gentler feel on your skin. And it's easier, because nearly everything comes in pre-filled, drop-in cartridges. No measuring, no mess, no guesswork.

That convenience-first philosophy runs through the entire FROG lineup — from the SmartChlor®-powered @ease systems for hot tubs and swim spas, to the bromine-based Serene line, to the POOL FROG and Flippin' FROG systems for pools of every size, plus a full range of support chemicals and problem-solvers. Whatever you're sanitizing, there's a FROG product sized for it, and they're all built around the same goal: less time on maintenance, more time enjoying the water.
