Directions
The order in which you use these three products matters — using them out of sequence means doing some steps twice. Follow this sequence on day one of your fresh fill:
- Fill your spa with fresh water. If possible, fill through a FreshWater Clean Screen Pre-Filter at the hose to remove iron, copper, and tannins before they enter the spa.
- Test fill water with the 5-Way Test Strips. Note your starting calcium hardness, pH, and alkalinity readings. Target ranges: pH 7.2–7.8, alkalinity 80–120 ppm, calcium hardness 25–75 ppm for salt-system spas.
- Place the Vanishing Act calcium remover bag over the heater return per the package instructions. Run the spa's circulation pump continuously for the recommended treatment time (typically 24 hours for the standard size). The resin in the bag will absorb dissolved calcium, lowering hardness toward the target range.
- Remove and dispose of the Vanishing Act bag after the treatment time. Retest hardness with 5-Way Test Strips to confirm the level dropped into the target range.
- Add the 10 lbs of FreshWater Spa Salt to your spa with circulation pumps running. Allow 10–15 minutes for full dissolution.
- Verify salt level with FreshWater Salt Test Strips (sold separately — needed for ongoing salt monitoring) and confirm you've reached approximately 1,750 ppm.
- Initialize the FreshWater Salt System per the system's Start-Up Guide. Within hours, the system will begin generating chlorine automatically.
- Test chemistry again with 5-Way Test Strips after 24 hours to confirm chlorine residual is in the 2–3 ppm range and pH/alkalinity are still on target. Adjust as needed with FreshWater pH Up or pH Down (sold separately).

Pro tip: Test BEFORE you add Vanishing Act: Step 2 (testing fill water) tells you whether you actually need the Vanishing Act, and how aggressively to use it. If your fill water tests at calcium hardness below 75 ppm already, you may not need Vanishing Act at all. If it tests above 300 ppm (extreme hardness from well water or very hard municipal supply), the standard Vanishing Act may not be enough — consider Vanishing Act XL (3x capacity) instead.
