Description

SpaPure Stain & Scale Preventer is a concentrated liquid sequestrant that does two jobs in one bottle: it removes the dissolved metals that stain spa surfaces and prevents scale from building up on your shell, plumbing, and equipment. It works on iron, copper, manganese, and high calcium hardness, and it will even help lift fresh scale that has recently started to form.

Metals and hard minerals are in almost every water supply, and a hot tub concentrates them. As water evaporates and heats, those minerals come out of solution — copper and iron leave rust-colored or greenish stains, and calcium forms chalky scale that roughens surfaces, clogs jets, and shortens the life of your heater. Left unmanaged, the damage is gradual but permanent.

This product keeps those minerals locked up and moving through your filter instead of depositing on your spa — protecting both how it looks and how long the equipment lasts. With other brands it can take multiple products to do this; SpaPure handles prevention and removal in one.

Pro Tip: Always add a sequestrant on every fresh fill — especially if your source water is well water or known to be hard or high in metals. Treating the water from the start keeps metals in solution before they ever get a chance to stain, which is far easier than trying to remove stains once they've set into the surface.

What's in the Box
  • 1 x SpaPure Stain & Scale Preventer (liquid — available in 1 pt or 1 qt, depending on the size you select)
Key Features
  • Prevents and removes in one product — solves existing stains and scale and stops new buildup
  • Controls multiple metals — iron, copper, manganese, and high calcium hardness
  • Protects surfaces and equipment — guards the shell, plumbing, heater, and jets from scale and staining
  • Removes metals through the filter — a unique formula that carries minerals out rather than letting them deposit
  • Concentrated formula — a little treats a lot of water
  • Two sizes — 1 pt for routine weekly upkeep, 1 qt for hard water, well water, or better value
How It Works

The formula works by sequestering — chemically binding to dissolved metals like iron, copper, and manganese so they stay locked in solution instead of falling out and staining surfaces. The same action softens and lifts scale deposits. Once bound, the minerals are carried to your filter and removed from the water rather than left to deposit on the spa.

Because it's actively pulling minerals into the water column to move them out, the water may turn slightly hazy for a short time after you add it — that's the product working, and it clears as the filter does its job.

Pro Tip: Sequestrants get gradually used up as they bind metals and as your sanitizer oxidizes them, which is why this is a weekly product, not a one-and-done. Keep up the small weekly maintenance dose — skipping it lets free metals build back up, and that's when stains reappear. Staying ahead of it is far easier than chasing stains after the fact.

Directions for Use

Never mix different products together in the same bottle or pail — add this product directly to the spa water. Balance spa water to the appropriate ranges, including pH and alkalinity, before treating.

Removal of Fresh Stains & Scale

  1. Rinse and clean the filter with SpaPure Filter Cleaner per its label.
  2. Balance the spa water (pH and alkalinity) to the proper ranges.
  3. With the circulation system running, add 2 to 3 ounces per 100 gallons directly to the water.
  4. Continue circulating for at least one hour. The water may become hazy for a short period. The spa may be used one hour after treatment.
  5. Brush away any existing stains or scale buildup with an appropriate spa brush as needed.

Prevention of Stains & Scale

  1. Test spa water at least once a week and make necessary adjustments.
  2. Weekly, with the circulation system running, add 1 ounce per 100 gallons directly to the water.

Pro Tip: Clean the filter before a removal treatment, not after. Since this product works by carrying metals out through the filter, starting with a clean filter gives it somewhere to put everything — a clogged filter can't capture the minerals you're trying to remove, and they'll just stay in the water.

Compatibility

SpaPure Stain & Scale Preventer works in any spa on any sanitizer system — chlorine, bromine, salt, or mineral. As a water-care additive rather than a sanitizer, it fits every routine.

Balance your pH and total alkalinity before adding it, and pair it with SpaPure test strips to monitor your water. One timing note: if you've just shocked or superchlorinated the spa, wait before adding a sequestrant — a high sanitizer level can break it down before it has a chance to work. Never mix it with other chemicals in the same container; always add it directly to the spa water.

SpaPure® Brand FAQs

What is SpaPure, and who makes it?

SpaPure is a line of spa and hot tub water care products from Haviland Pool & Spa, a 100% employee-owned American manufacturer with more than 55 years of pool and spa experience. Haviland's Pool & Spa division began in 1968 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and all SpaPure products are made in the USA.

Is SpaPure formulated specifically for spas, or is it pool chemicals in smaller bottles?

SpaPure is engineered specifically for spas and hot tubs. Spa water is a different challenge from pool water — far less volume, a much higher bather load per gallon, and hotter temperatures that accelerate everything. SpaPure's formulas are concentrated and dosed for that environment rather than scaled-down pool products.

Can I use SpaPure products with my chlorine, bromine, or salt water system?

Yes. SpaPure makes products for chlorine, bromine, and salt/mineral programs, plus balancers, shocks, clarifiers, and specialty treatments that work alongside any of them. Match the sanitizer-specific products to your system, and use the balancers and oxidizers regardless of which sanitizer you run. If you're not sure what fits your setup, a quick water test will point you to the right products.

Why buy SpaPure from an authorized dealer like Leisure Time Inc.?

Buying from an authorized dealer means you get fresh, correctly stored product — spa chemicals degrade with age and poor storage — backed by people who can actually help you use it. Leisure Time Inc. has carried spa water care for decades, and our team can match products to your specific spa and water chemistry. Chemicals sold far below market price on third-party marketplaces are often expired, mishandled, or gray-market, with no support behind them.

Why do some SpaPure products ship ground only and can't be returned by mail?

Certain spa chemicals — chlorine and bromine products, oxidizers, and some acids — are classified as hazardous materials by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Federal regulations require them to ship by ground rather than air and prohibit consumers from mailing them back. Products with this restriction are noted on the product page. If you have unopened chemicals you no longer need, you can return them in person at one of our showrooms or contact us about your options.

How do I know which SpaPure products my spa needs?

Start with a water test. Testing tells you what your water actually needs instead of guessing — which sanitizer level to adjust, whether to balance pH or alkalinity, and when to shock. You can test at home with SpaPure test strips, or bring a water sample to any Leisure Time showroom for free in-store testing and a product recommendation. You can also call us and we'll walk you through it.

About SpaPure®

SpaPure is a spa-specific water care brand made by Haviland Pool & Spa, a 100% employee-owned American company with more than 55 years in pool and spa chemistry. Haviland's Pool & Spa division began in 1968 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as one of the early pioneers of modern pool and spa treatments, and today produces over 100 products across eight in-house brands. Because Haviland is employee-owned through an ESOP, the people who make and stand behind SpaPure have a direct stake in whether your water turns out right.

SpaPure is built specifically for spas and hot tubs — concentrated, fast-acting formulas designed for the small water volumes and high bather loads that make spa water harder to keep balanced than pool water. The line covers the full routine: sanitizing, shock and oxidation, water balance, clarifiers and enzymes, stain and scale control, and salt-system support — all proudly made in the USA.
