Owning a hot tub is like having a personal oasis of relaxation right in your backyard. However, to ensure that your hot tub remains a source of rejuvenation and not a breeding ground for bacteria and algae, proper water care is essential. The FROG method, a trusted and effective system for hot tub maintenance, can simplify the process and keep your hot tub water crystal clear and safe for soaking. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the FROG method step by step, helping you enjoy your hot tub worry-free.

Β

FROG Method: What Is It?

The FROG method is a water care system designed specifically for hot tubs and spas. It utilizes a combination of minerals and bromine to maintain water quality and clarity while minimizing the use of traditional chemicals like chlorine. The key components of the FROG system include:

  1. Mineral Cartridge: This cartridge contains a blend of minerals, typically silver and copper, that help inhibit the growth of algae and bacteria in your hot tub.

  2. Bromine Cartridge: The bromine cartridge provides a slow release of bromine into the water, which acts as a sanitizer to kill bacteria and maintain water cleanliness.

Now, let's dive into a step-by-step hot tub water care guide using the FROG method:

Β

Step 1: Start with Fresh Water

Begin your hot tub maintenance routine with a clean slate. Drain the hot tub completely and thoroughly clean the interior surfaces to remove any residue, debris, or biofilm. Rinse and refill the hot tub with fresh water, ensuring the water level is within the recommended range.

PRO TIP: Apply 'Fast Gloss' to the shell of your hot tub before you refill to extend it's life.

Β

Step 2: Adjust pH and Alkalinity

Test the pH and total alkalinity (TA) levels of the hot tub water using a reliable water testing kit. Ideal pH levels should be between 7.2 and 7.8, while TA should range from 80 to 120 ppm (parts per million). Adjust these levels using pH increasers or decreasers and alkalinity increasers as needed to achieve the right balance.

Β

Step 3: Install the FROG System

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the FROG mineral and bromine cartridges in your hot tub's built-in floating holder or inline system. Ensure that the cartridges are properly seated and secure.

Β

Step 4: Monitor Water Chemistry

Regularly test the water's chemical balance, especially bromine levels. The FROG system will gradually release bromine, but you may need to add more if the levels drop below the recommended range (typically 2-4 ppm).

Β

Step 5: Shock Treatment

Even with the FROG system in place, it's essential to shock your hot tub periodically to oxidize contaminants and maintain water clarity. Use a non-chlorine shock or a shock product compatible with bromine systems. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for dosage and frequency.

Β

Step 6: Routine Maintenance

To keep your hot tub water in optimal condition, perform these routine tasks:

  • Skim the surface regularly to remove debris.

  • Clean the filter cartridges as needed to ensure proper filtration.

  • Drain and refill your hot tub every three to four months to prevent the buildup of dissolved solids.

Β

Step 7: Replace Cartridges

The FROG mineral and bromine cartridges will eventually need replacement. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for cartridge replacement intervals, typically every 3-4 months for mineral cartridges and 2-4 weeks for bromine cartridges.

Β

Conclusion

Maintaining your hot tub water using the FROG method offers a straightforward and effective way to ensure your hot tub remains a haven of relaxation. With proper care, you can enjoy crystal-clear, sanitized water that's gentle on your skin and free from the harsh chemicals associated with traditional chlorine-based systems. By following this comprehensive guide, you'll be well on your way to soaking in soothing hot tub bliss whenever you desire.

My frog system doesn’t seem to be maintaining an adequate balance of chlorine in my tub? I also find out if you’re supposed to read place the chlorine cartridges once a month I find it they do not dissipate over that month and there’s always quite a bit left in those cartridges? So do you just let them go or do you change the cartridge anyway? Would like some feedback on that other than that, we like our hot tub a lot. Thanks Mooney’s.
