Description

The FreshWater Salt System Start-Up Kit is the complete launch package that converts a salt-ready Hot Spring or Caldera spa from chlorine or bromine to the FreshWater Salt System — Watkins Wellness's automated, low-chemistry sanitization platform. The kit includes every component needed to install the system, balance fill water properly, generate your first chlorine residual, and confirm everything is working as intended. Buying these components individually would cost meaningfully more than the kit price; everything that ships in this box is genuine Watkins Wellness, designed to work together from day one.

This is the gateway purchase for an entirely different spa ownership experience. Once installed, your spa generates chlorine automatically from dissolved salt, holding a steady sanitizer residual for months at a time without your daily intervention. No more measuring dichlor by the teaspoon. No more chlorine smell. No more eye sting from out-of-range chemistry. The water itself feels softer against skin — a real, measurable difference that owners notice within the first soak.

Two things to confirm before you buy:

  • Your spa must be "salt-ready" — most Hot Spring Highlife and Limelight Collection spas from 2019 onward have the pre-installed salt-system hardware (the cartridge dock and electrical connections). Caldera Utopia and Paradise models from the same era are also typically salt-ready. Older spas, Hot Spring Hot Spot/TX/SX, Caldera Vacanza, and Freeflow models don't have this hardware and can't accept the system.
  • Verify before ordering — check the model label on the equipment bay, look at your owner's manual, or call our service team with your spa model and year. We can confirm salt-readiness in under a minute.
Pro Tip: If your spa has the FreshWater IQ Smart Monitoring System (factory-installed on 2024+ Hot Spring Highlife/Limelight and Caldera Utopia/Paradise), the IQ controller is a separate component from the Salt System hardware in this kit. The IQ Start-Up Kit (SKU 80201) adds intelligent monitoring on top of the Salt System. If you have a 2024+ IQ-equipped spa that already has the IQ controller installed and you just need to start the Salt System with consumables, this kit is the right one. Not sure which you need? Call us with your model and year.

What's in the Box

The kit includes ten genuine Watkins Wellness components — a complete launch package:

  1. Salt Controller — the dock that holds the titanium cartridge and connects to the spa's power and circulation system; installed at delivery into the spa's pre-existing salt-ready hardware
  2. Titanium Cartridge — the consumable cell that generates chlorine via electrolysis of dissolved salt (approximately 4 months of operation; replaced as needed with the FreshWater Salt System Replacement Cartridge, SKU 80004)
  3. 10 lb Bag of FreshWater Spa Salt — the salt your system converts to chlorine; one bag handles the initial fill of most residential spas
  4. Vanishing Act Calcium Remover — single-use bag that pulls excess calcium out of fill water; essential because salt systems require calcium under 75 ppm
  5. FreshWater Salt Test Strips — for verifying salt level (target 1,750 ppm) during initial setup and ongoing maintenance
  6. FreshWater 5-Way Test Strips — for checking chlorine, bromine, alkalinity, pH, and total hardness during start-up and routine balancing
  7. FreshWater Phosphate Test Strips — for testing fill water for phosphates (a hidden enemy of salt system efficiency)
  8. FreshWater Salt System Owner's Manual — the full reference document for ongoing operation
  9. Start-Up Guide — step-by-step instructions for first-time setup
  10. Installation Guide — spa-model-specific instructions for installing the salt controller into your spa's salt-ready hardware

Every component is sourced directly from Watkins Wellness, the original manufacturer. No third-party substitutions, no aftermarket parts, no compatibility concerns.

Key Features
  • 10-component complete launch kit — controller, cartridge, salt, calcium remover, three types of test strips, and three reference documents
  • Authentic Watkins Wellness — sourced directly from the manufacturer, not aftermarket marketplaces
  • Better value than buying components individually — kit pricing reflects the bundled package versus retail of individual items
  • Owner-installable — typical installation takes 10–20 minutes; no service technician required
  • Includes calcium remover — critical for the salt system's 25–75 ppm calcium requirement; many "kits" from competitors leave this out
  • Includes three diagnostic strips — salt, 5-way, and phosphate testing for full water care confidence from day one
  • Spa-model-specific installation guide — instructions match your specific Hot Spring or Caldera salt-ready model
  • Fully OEM — preserves any factory warranty by using only manufacturer-approved components
  • Automated water care from day one — once installed, the system maintains chlorine automatically for months
How It Works

The FreshWater Salt System uses a process called electrolysis. When salt (sodium chloride) is dissolved in spa water and an electrical current is applied across the cartridge's titanium electrodes, chloride ions in the dissolved salt are converted into pure chlorine. That chlorine then sanitizes the water exactly like dichlor or liquid bleach would — except generated continuously and automatically rather than added by hand.

Here's the daily cycle once the system is running:

  • The cartridge sits in the salt dock, fully submerged in circulating water
  • The system runs a programmed cycle — generating chlorine on a schedule set by the controller and informed by bather load
  • Chlorine is created in real time — there's no chlorine storage tank; it's produced on demand
  • The chlorine sanitizes the water — destroying bacteria, viruses, and contaminants — and then breaks back down to chloride, which rejoins the salt cycle
  • Salt itself is not consumed — you only top off salt when water is added or replaced

Why the kit includes ten components: a salt system is more than just the controller and cartridge. To function properly, the system needs specific water chemistry at start-up — calcium under 75 ppm, salt at 1,750 ppm, pH and alkalinity balanced. The kit provides everything needed to achieve those conditions on the first fill, with diagnostic strips to verify each parameter is in range. Skip any component and you risk a system that runs out of spec from day one and never quite catches up.

The biggest single difference between a chlorine-program spa and a salt-system spa: with chlorine, you maintain water care actively. With salt, you set it up correctly once, then verify periodically. The 10-component kit gives you what you need for that one-time correct setup.

Pro Tip: The most common reason new salt-system owners experience problems isn't the system itself — it's a fill that wasn't properly prepared. Calcium hardness above 75 ppm scales the titanium cartridge within weeks. Out-of-range pH and alkalinity stress the electrolysis reaction. High phosphates fuel algae and consume the generated chlorine. Use every component in this kit during start-up, in the order the Start-Up Guide specifies. The system rewards careful initial setup with months of trouble-free operation.

Directions for Use

Before You Begin

  1. Confirm your spa is salt-ready using the methods described in the Compatibility section above.
  2. Drain the existing water if you're converting from a chlorine or bromine program — the salt system needs to start fresh, not on top of existing sanitizer chemistry.
  3. Clean the spa shell and jets while the spa is empty; this is the best opportunity for thorough surface cleaning.
  4. Have all kit components ready before you start — installation flows smoothly when everything is at hand.

Installation and Start-Up Procedure

  1. Power off the spa at the breakers in the electrical subpanel.
  2. Test fill water for calcium hardness using the included 5-Way Test Strips. If hardness is above 75 ppm, plan to use the Vanishing Act calcium reducer during fill.
  3. Test fill water for phosphates using the included Phosphate Test Strips. If phosphates are above 300 ppb, you may need a phosphate remover product (sold separately) during start-up.
  4. Begin filling the spa with fresh water. If calcium is above 75 ppm, place the Vanishing Act bag on the bottom drain at this point per its instructions.
  5. Install the salt controller into the spa's pre-existing salt-ready hardware. The specific procedure varies by spa model — refer to the included Installation Guide for your specific Hot Spring or Caldera model.
  6. Insert the titanium cartridge into the controller housing.
  7. Allow the spa to fill completely and reach operating temperature.
  8. Add the 10-lb bag of FreshWater Spa Salt to the spa with circulation pumps running. Allow 10–15 minutes for full dissolution.
  9. Verify salt level using the Salt Test Strips. Target: 1,750 ppm. If low, add additional salt (sold separately) in small increments and retest after 10 minutes per addition.
  10. Balance alkalinity and pH — alkalinity first to 80–120 ppm, then pH to 7.2–7.8.
  11. Power the spa back on at the breakers.
  12. Follow the Start-Up Guide for system initialization — typically involves entering the Salt System menu on the topside controller and confirming the system has detected the cartridge.
  13. Generate an initial chlorine residual — the Start-Up Guide specifies dosing FreshWater Chlorinating Granules (sold separately) to reach 3 ppm at start-up; the system then maintains this level automatically going forward.
  14. Verify chlorine generation after 24 hours using the 5-Way Test Strips. Confirm a 3 ppm residual is being maintained.

Going Forward (First Month)

  • Test water weekly using the 5-Way and Salt Test Strips during the first month — confirms the system is working as expected
  • Adjust the Output level if needed — lower Output settings extend cartridge life; the goal is the lowest setting that maintains 3 ppm chlorine
  • Note the cartridge install date — replacement is due approximately 4 months from this date
  • Watch for the system's salt and cartridge alerts on the topside panel — the controller tracks both internally

Ongoing Maintenance

  • Cartridge replacement every 4 months (3 cartridges per year)
  • Salt top-off as water is added or replaced — typically minor adjustments per top-off
  • Calcium management at every fresh fill — Vanishing Act for hard-water fills, Stain & Scale Defense weekly between fills
  • pH/alkalinity adjustments as needed — salt-system pH drifts up over time, so pH Down is the most-used balancer
  • Drain and refill annually — fresh water resets total dissolved solids and starts the next year clean

Pro Tip: Save the included Owner's Manual, Start-Up Guide, and Installation Guide in a sealed plastic bag or folder near your spa's equipment bay. The Installation Guide especially is something you'll want to reference if you ever need to remove the controller for service or repositioning. Many salt-system service calls are owners trying to remember procedures they did once a year ago — having the documents on hand makes you self-sufficient.

Compatibility

The FreshWater Salt System Start-Up Kit is designed for "salt-ready" Hot Spring and Caldera spa models — those that came from the factory with the pre-installed hardware to accept the salt controller.

Compatible Spa Lines

  • Hot Spring® Highlife® Collection — salt-ready models from 2019 onward
  • Hot Spring® Limelight® Collection — salt-ready models from 2019 onward
  • Caldera® Utopia® Series — salt-ready models from the same era
  • Caldera® Paradise® Series — salt-ready models from the same era

NOT Compatible With

  • Pre-2019 Hot Spring Highlife or Limelight — most older spas in these collections used the Hot Spring ACE system, which is different technology and requires different components (see the FreshWater ACE Cell Cleaner page for ACE-related maintenance)
  • Hot Spring Hot Spot®, TX, SX — not salt-ready; no pre-installed hardware
  • Caldera Vacanza® Series — not salt-ready
  • Freeflow® Spas — not salt-ready
  • Other manufacturers (Sundance, Jacuzzi, Bullfrog, Marquis, etc.) — proprietary Watkins Wellness technology; will not fit other brands' spas

How to Verify Salt-Readiness

  • Check the model label on the spa's equipment bay door — look for "Salt System Ready" or "FreshWater Salt Compatible"
  • Look at your owner's manual — salt-ready spas have a section dedicated to the FreshWater Salt System
  • Look for the salt dock — physically inspect the equipment area for an empty dock designed to receive the salt controller
  • Call us with your spa model and year — we can confirm in under a minute

Difference From the IQ Start-Up Kit

Two start-up kits exist for the FreshWater Salt System family:

  • FreshWater Salt System Start-Up Kit (this product, SKU 80001) — standard salt system for salt-ready 2019+ Hot Spring Highlife/Limelight and Caldera Utopia/Paradise spas
  • FreshWater IQ Start-Up Kit (SKU 80201) — adds the Smart Monitoring System with sensor and controller for 2024+ spas that came IQ-ready; provides hourly real-time chlorine/pH/salt readings on the topside panel

If your spa is a 2024+ Hot Spring or Caldera with the IQ Smart Monitoring System, you'll want the IQ Start-Up Kit instead of this one.

Works Alongside

  • FreshWater Salt System Replacement Cartridge (single or 3-pack) — the cartridge included in this kit lasts about 4 months; ongoing operation requires replacements
  • FreshWater Spa Salt — additional salt as needed for water top-offs over the year
  • FreshWater Stain & Scale Defense — weekly sequestrant to protect the cartridge between fresh-fill calcium treatments
  • FreshWater pH/Alkalinity Down — salt-system pH drifts up over time; pH Down is the most-used balancer
  • FreshWater Clean Screen Pre-Filter — cleaner fill water means less work for the calcium remover and the cartridge
  • FreshWater Phosphate Remover — if start-up phosphate test reveals high levels in fill water

Pro Tip: Order a replacement cartridge 3-pack (SKU 80004 in pack format) when you order the start-up kit. The cartridge in the kit will run about four months, then you'll need replacements throughout the year. Ordering the 3-pack ahead means you have replacements on hand exactly when you need them and at the best per-unit price — and your salt system never has downtime waiting for a single cartridge to arrive.

FreshWater® Brand FAQs

Do I have to own a Hot Spring or Caldera spa to use FreshWater products?

No. FreshWater chemicals, test strips, and most accessories work on any residential hot tub or spa, regardless of brand. The FreshWater Salt System and FreshWater IQ Smart Monitoring System are the exceptions — those are designed specifically for compatible Watkins Wellness spas (Hot Spring Highlife and Limelight, Caldera Utopia and Paradise). Everything else in the line is universal.

How is FreshWater different from other spa chemical brands?

Most spa water care brands are formulated by chemical companies and sold across hundreds of unrelated spa models. FreshWater is formulated by the same engineering team that designs Hot Spring and Caldera hot tubs — so the chemistry is built to match what real spa equipment actually needs. Dosing recommendations, concentration levels, and pH targets are calibrated against working spas, not a generic spec sheet. That precision tends to mean less chemical waste and fewer balance problems over the life of a fill.

Can I mix FreshWater products with other brands like Leisure Time or SpaGuard?

In most cases, yes — but with one important caveat. Don't mix sanitizer systems. A chlorine spa should stay on chlorine; a bromine spa should stay on bromine. Mixing sanitizer chemistries can create unwanted byproducts and unstable readings. Balancers (pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness) and supporting products like defoamers, clarifiers, and stain & scale defenders are generally compatible across brands. When in doubt, call us or bring a water sample to one of our showrooms before mixing chemistries.

How long do FreshWater chemicals last in storage?

Unopened, most FreshWater liquid and granular chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 2 years from manufacture when stored cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight. Test strips last about 1 to 2 years if the bottle stays sealed with its desiccant pack between uses. Chlorine-based products lose strength faster than balancers, so rotate stock — oldest first — and avoid buying more than a single season's supply at a time. The expiration date is printed on the container.

Are FreshWater products safe for sensitive skin?

When dosed correctly and the water is properly balanced, yes. Most skin and eye irritation in hot tubs isn't caused by chlorine or bromine itself — it's caused by chloramines(used-up sanitizer that hasn't been oxidized) or by water that's outside the proper pH range. Owners with sensitive skin often do well on the FreshWater Salt System (lower active chlorine residual) or on a mineral-supported chlorine program. If skin irritation is an ongoing issue, see our Eye/Skin Irritation Problem Solver page.

Can FreshWater chemicals be returned by mail?

Some can, some can't — it depends on whether the product is classified as hazardous material (hazmat) by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Test strips, defoamers, calcium removers, clarifiers, and most balancers are non-hazmat and can be returned by mail. Chlorinating granules, bromine products, and pH/alkalinity down (a regulated acid)are hazmat and cannot ship back by mail under federal law — but they can be returned in person at any LTI showroom. See our Returns on Hazardous Materials page for the full list.

About FreshWater®

FreshWater® is the water care brand from Watkins Wellness — the parent company of Hot Spring, Caldera, and Freeflow Spas, and one of the largest manufacturers of premium hot tubs in the world. Watkins has been engineering spas and water care chemistry for over forty years, and FreshWater is the line they developed specifically to keep their own equipment running clean, clear, and properly balanced.

What that means for owners: FreshWater chemicals, sanitizers, test strips, and accessories are formulated and dosed for the same shells, jets, heaters, and circulation systems Watkins builds. Active ingredients, pH targets, and concentration levels are calibrated against real spa equipment — not generic pool chemistry repackaged for hot tubs. The result is a product line that works as well in a Hot Spring or Caldera spa as it does in any other residential hot tub on the market.

The FreshWater catalog covers everything from routine maintenance to advanced water care technology:

  • The FreshWater® Salt System — a sanitizer system that automatically generates chlorine from a salt cartridge, lasting up to a full year between water changes
  • The FreshWater® IQ Smart Monitoring System — sensor and controller that read chlorine, pH, and salt levels and display them on the spa's topside control
  • Sanitizers and sanitizer support — chlorinating granules, Ag+ Silver Ion Sanitizer, mineral cartridges
  • Balancers — pH/Alkalinity Up, pH/Alkalinity Down, calcium boosters
  • Water clarity and care — clarifiers, defoamers, stain & scale defenders, phosphate removers, Vanishing Act calcium remover
  • Testing — 5-Way Test Strips, Salt Test Strips, Phosphate Test Strips
  • Start-up kits and bundles — pre-portioned chemistry packages for fresh fills and new spa setups

Leisure Time Inc. is an authorized FreshWater dealer and stocks the full line at our Idaho Falls, Boise, and Twin Falls showrooms. Online orders ship nationwide, and water samples can be dropped off at any of our showrooms for free professional testing if you'd like a second opinion before you dose.
