Description

Leisure Time Foam Down is a concentrated non-oil-based foam suppressant formulated specifically for spas and hot tubs. Active chemistry: a proprietary blend of non-oily anti-foaming agents that collapse existing foam on contact and help prevent immediate re-foaming. The "non-oil" detail matters — cheaper general-purpose defoamers use oil-based silicones that knock down foam but then leave a thin oil film on the water surface and filter, which often makes the foam problem worse over the next few uses.

Foam in a hot tub isn't normal — and it's not the same thing as bubbles. Bubbles from jet aeration are clear, large, and disappear within seconds of surfacing. Foam is white, persistent, and accumulates several inches deep within minutes of turning on the jets. Foam means soaps, body lotions, detergent residues, or organic residue have built up in the water to the point where surface tension is no longer keeping bubbles intact and they're forming a stable foam matrix instead. Once foam starts, it gets dramatically worse with every minute of jet operation.

Foam Down attacks active foam immediately. A small spray directly onto the foam surface — about ½ oz. at a time — collapses the foam matrix within seconds, restoring a normal water surface. Keep a bottle on hand for hot tub parties, first dates, and any other occasion where suddenly having a tub full of bubbles would be embarrassing. The 32 oz size is enough for years of occasional on-demand use.

Pro Tip: Foam Down treats the symptom, not the cause. If your spa foams every time the jets come on, you have an underlying water chemistry problem — most commonly low calcium hardness (below 150 ppm), accumulated organic residue from bathers, or fill water that's simply past its drain-and-refill date. Repeated dosing of Foam Down on a chronically foaming spa is a band-aid. The real fix is to test calcium hardness, dose Enzyme to clear organics, and drain-and-refill if the water is more than 3–4 months old.

How It Works

Foam is a stable matrix of bubbles held together by surface tension. In clean water, jet-driven bubbles rise to the surface and immediately pop — they don't form foam because there's nothing in the water to hold the bubble walls together. When soaps, lotions, body oils, or detergent residues accumulate in the water, those organic surfactants reduce surface tension and coat the bubble walls with a flexible film that prevents them from popping. Each new bubble joins the stack instead of collapsing, and within minutes you have several inches of foam covering the entire water surface.

Foam Down uses non-silicone anti-foaming agents that work by disrupting the surfactant film holding the foam together. The agents spread rapidly across the foam surface — that's why a spray application works so well — and chemically destabilize the bubble walls, causing the foam matrix to collapse from the top down. Existing foam disappears in seconds, and the residual anti-foam activity in the water helps prevent immediate re-foaming during the same session.

The "non-oil-based" distinction is the technical advantage. Many cheap general-purpose defoamers use silicone oils that knock down foam by coating the water surface with a thin oily layer. The foam disappears, but the oil residue then accumulates on the spa shell, the filter cartridge, and the waterline — feeding the next foaming event and shortening filter life. Leisure Time Foam Down's non-oil chemistry avoids that trade-off; it kills the foam without leaving residue that contributes to future problems.

Pro Tip: If you're using Foam Down more than two or three times between drain-and-refills, treat it as a diagnostic flag. The most common root causes — in order — are: (1)laundry detergent residue on bathing suits(rinse suits in plain water before getting in), (2)lotions and sunscreens applied within an hour of soaking, (3)low calcium hardness(test with a strip — should be 150–250 ppm), and (4)water past its 3–4 month refill date. Fix the root cause and you won't need Foam Down again for months.

Directions for Use

Standard Foam Treatment

  1. Shake the bottle well before using.
  2. Add approximately ½ oz. of Foam Down directly into the foaming area. The foam will collapse within seconds.
  3. Repeat as necessary if foam returns during the same session.
  4. Soak immediately if desired — no waiting period.

Spray Bottle Application (Recommended)

  1. For more precise targeting, transfer a small amount of Foam Down to a clean spray bottle.
  2. Spray directly onto foam patches as they form.
  3. This method uses less product per application and reaches foam in corners and around jets more effectively than pouring.

Preventing Repeat Foaming

Foam Down is an on-demand treatment, not a weekly maintenance product. After dosing, if foam returns within hours or with the next use, address the underlying cause:

  • Test calcium hardness with a quality test strip — should read 150–250 ppm. Low calcium is a leading cause of chronic foam.
  • Test pH and alkalinity — out-of-balance chemistry contributes to foam formation.
  • Dose Leisure Time Enzyme at 1 oz. per 250 gallons to break down accumulated organic residues.
  • Check fill water age — if you're past 3–4 months on the current fill, it's time for a drain and refill.
  • Rinse bathing suits in plain water (no detergent) before each soak.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in original container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use
  • Protect from freezing — liquid formula can lose effectiveness if frozen
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not mix with other chemicals in undiluted form — always apply directly to spa water or foam
  • Shake well before each use — separation is normal and not a sign of degradation

Pro Tip: Keep Foam Down within arm's reach of the spa, not in the chemical storage cabinet across the yard. The whole point of an on-demand defoamer is that it works in 10 seconds when you need it — which usually means in the middle of a soak with guests, not during a planned chemistry session. A small bottle stashed in the spa cabinet (out of direct UV and freezing temperatures, but accessible) saves you a long, foamy walk every time.

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
