Description

Leisure Time Defender is a concentrated liquid stain and scale inhibitor formulated specifically for spas and hot tubs. Active chemistry: a proprietary blend of organic sequestering polymers that bind to dissolved calcium and metals, keeping them suspended in the water instead of bonding to your spa's surfaces. Works with every common sanitizer program — chlorine, bromine, ozone, biguanide, and mineral cartridge systems.

Hard water is the silent killer of hot tubs. Dissolved calcium and minerals don't stay dissolved forever — heat, agitation, and time push them out of solution, where they crust onto your heater element, glaze your jets, and leave a chalky ring around the waterline. Once scale takes hold, it reduces heater efficiency, shortens equipment life, and turns routine water care into a chore. The expensive components in your spa — the heater, the circulation pump, the jet bodies — are the ones scale damages first.

Defender stops that process before it starts. Used weekly at the recommended dose, it also gradually lifts existing scale deposits back into the water so your filter can carry them away. A single quart treats a standard residential spa for roughly four months, making Defender one of the most cost-effective ways to protect the most expensive parts of your tub.

Pro Tip: If you've recently filled your spa with well water — or if you live in a hard water region — pair Defender with Leisure Time Metal Gon at startup. Metal Gon sequesters dissolved metals during the fresh fill; Defender keeps them suspended week after week. Together they prevent the brown, green, or rust-colored staining that hard water can leave on acrylic shells.

How It Works

Calcium, magnesium, and other dissolved metals are present in nearly every municipal and well water source. When water is heated and aggressively circulated — exactly what happens inside a hot tub — those minerals come out of solution and precipitate onto the nearest surface. The result is scale: the white, crusty buildup you see on heater elements, the rough patches inside jet housings, and the dull film that develops on acrylic shells over time.

Defender uses sequestering polymer chemistry to bind to those dissolved minerals at the molecular level, keeping them suspended in the water column instead of letting them attach to spa surfaces. Suspended minerals are then captured by your spa's filter cartridge and removed during routine filter cleaning. With consistent weekly dosing, existing light-to-moderate scale gradually re-dissolves and is filtered out the same way.

Because Defender works mechanically — sequestering minerals rather than chemically reacting with sanitizer — it won't interfere with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridges, or biguanide systems. It also doesn't affect pH, total alkalinity, or sanitizer residual readings, so your weekly water test stays clean and predictable.

Pro Tip: Calcium hardness above 250 ppm is the danger zone for spa equipment. If your fill water tests above 200 ppm, dose Defender weekly without exception — even if you don't see visible scale yet. By the time scale is visible on jets or the waterline, damage to the heater element has typically already started.

Directions for Use

Weekly Maintenance Dose

  1. With the spa's circulation pump running, slowly pour Defender directly into the spa water around the perimeter.
  2. Use 2 oz. for spas up to 800 gallons (covers nearly every residential portable spa). Use 4 oz. for spas over 800 gallons.
  3. Continue circulation for at least one hour, or allow a full normal filter cycle to complete.
  4. Repeat weekly to maintain scale and stain protection.

Fresh Fill / Start-Up

  1. After filling your spa with fresh water, balance pH (7.2–7.8) and total alkalinity (80–120 ppm).
  2. If your fill water contains metals (well water or older plumbing), add an initial dose of Leisure Time Metal Gon.
  3. Add Defender at the standard weekly dose with the pump running.
  4. Resume weekly dosing thereafter.

Existing Scale Removal

For spas with visible scale buildup or scale-related heater performance issues, dose Defender weekly without interruption. Most light-to-moderate scale will gradually dissolve and filter out over 4–6 weeks of continuous treatment. Severe deposits may require equipment-level descaling in addition to Defender treatment.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in original container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not mix with other chemicals in undiluted form — always add directly to spa water

Pro Tip: Add Defender on the same day each week — most owners pair it with their weekly water test. A consistent schedule does more for long-term scale prevention than the exact dose size. Missing a week here and there isn't catastrophic, but Defender works cumulatively, so steady weekly use beats occasional heavy applications.

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
