Description

Leisure Time Renew is a fast-dissolving granular non-chlorine shock oxidizer formulated specifically for spas and hot tubs. Active chemistry: 32.18% potassium peroxymonosulfate (DuPont Oxone) in a pH-buffered carrier. Renew oxidizes the soaps, body oils, lotions, deodorants, sweat, and organic waste that bathers leave behind in spa water — clearing cloudy water, eliminating odor, and restoring the freshness that disappears after a few uses without shock.

Every soak adds invisible organic load to your spa water. Sanitizer (chlorine, bromine, ozone) handles the bacteria, but it doesn't fully break down the oils, residues, and chloramines that build up over time. Skip shock for a few weeks and the result is predictable: cloudy water, foam on the surface, a "used" smell, and eyes that sting after twenty minutes in the tub. Sanitizer levels can look fine on a test strip while the water is quietly turning into a chemical soup.

Renew oxidizes that organic load on contact — restoring water clarity, eliminating odors, and freeing up your sanitizer to do the job it was meant to do. Because it's chlorine-free and pH-buffered, the spa is usable again in just 15 minutes, not the hours required after a heavy chlorine shock. Renew works in any spa, with any sanitizer system, and is also the activator for Leisure Time's chlorine-free Reserve & Renew sanitizing program.

Pro Tip: The right time to shock is after spa use, not before. Bathers are what introduce the organic load Renew is designed to oxidize — shocking afterward attacks that load while it's fresh, before it has time to combine with sanitizer or cloud the water. A standing rule of "shock after every soak, balance and sanitize before" eliminates 90% of the cloudy-water problems hot tub owners run into.

How It Works

Every bather brings invisible cargo into the tub: body oils, sweat, sunscreen, deodorant, perfume, lotion, hair product, microscopic skin cells, and traces of soap from the last shower. Sanitizer is designed to kill bacteria and viruses — it isn't built to break down organic matter at any meaningful rate. Left untouched, that organic load combines with chlorine or bromine to form chloramines and bromamines: the spent, "used" forms of sanitizer that smell strongly of chlorine, irritate eyes and skin, and contribute to that musty hot-tub odor people associate with poorly maintained spas.

Renew uses potassium peroxymonosulfate — a powerful, fast-acting oxidizer — to chemically break down those organic contaminants into harmless byproducts that off-gas or get filtered out. It also "burns off" combined chloramines and bromamines, freeing your sanitizer back into its active form so it can resume killing pathogens. The result is clearer water, eliminated odor, reduced irritation, and a sanitizer that actually works at the level your test strip says it does.

Because Renew is pH-buffered, it doesn't drop your spa's pH the way unbuffered oxidizers do. And because it's chlorine-free, it doesn't add to your overall chlorine load — so spa return time is short and the chemistry stays stable. Used weekly (or after each soak in heavy-use tubs), Renew keeps water consistently clear, fresh-smelling, and gentle on skin between drain-and-refill cycles.

Pro Tip: If you notice foam, cloudy water, or a "musty" smell within a day or two of soaking, the answer is almost always shock — not more sanitizer. Adding more chlorine or bromine when the real issue is organic buildup makes the problem worse, because the new sanitizer immediately combines with the organic load and forms more chloramines. Renew first, retest after 24 hours, and only then adjust sanitizer if needed.

Directions for Use

Weekly Shock / After Spa Use

  1. Turn on the spa's filtration system and remove the cover.
  2. Add 2 oz. of Renew per 250 gallons of spa water directly into the water around the perimeter (approximately 3 oz. for a typical 400-gallon residential spa).
  3. Circulate with the cover off for at least 15 minutes to allow chemistry to react and off-gas.
  4. Replace the cover. Spa is ready to use again.
  5. Repeat after each use, or weekly at minimum, to maintain clarity and freshness.

Reserve & Renew Chlorine-Free Sanitizing

For owners using Leisure Time's chlorine-free Reserve & Renew sanitizing program:

  1. Treat the water with Metal Gon (at fresh fill) and Reserve (sodium bromide solution) according to label directions.
  2. Add 4 oz. of Renew per 250 gallons of spa water (double the standard shock dose).
  3. Turn jets on and circulate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Test bromine residual — ideal range is 1–3 ppm.
  5. Re-dose Renew per the Reserve & Renew program schedule to maintain active bromine.

Cloudy Water Recovery

For visibly cloudy water or after heavy bather loads (parties, multiple consecutive soaks), use the standard 2 oz. per 250 gallon dose immediately, circulate with the cover off for 15 minutes, and retest the next day. Most clarity issues resolve within 24 hours of a single proper shock.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in original container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use — granular oxidizers absorb moisture and lose potency if left open
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not mix with other chemicals in the bottle, scoop, or any dry container — always add directly to spa water
  • Never combine granular oxidizers with chlorine or bromine in concentrated form

Pro Tip: Add Renew with the coveroffand leave it off for the full 15 minutes. The oxidation reaction releases gas that needs to vent out of the spa, not back into the cover where it can degrade the foam, the underside vinyl, and the headrest pillows over time. Five minutes of saved time isn't worth a year of cover damage.

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
