Description

Leisure Time Metal Gon is a highly concentrated metal sequestering agent formulated specifically for hot tubs and spas. It binds to iron, copper, and other dissolved metals in your fill water — locking them up before they can oxidize, deposit on spa surfaces, and turn your water (or your shell) rust-brown, green, or black.

Metal staining is one of the most frustrating problems a hot tub owner can run into, because by the time you can see it, it's already in the acrylic. Iron from well water turns the shell a rust-orange color. Copper — usually picked up from older household plumbing or copper-based algaecides — produces blue-green stains and can even tint hair and swimsuits. Both metals are invisible in solution; they only become a problem the moment water hits a hot tub, where heat, aeration, and high circulation rates pull them out of suspension fast.

Metal Gon stops that process at the source. Added during the fresh fill, it sequesters every metal ion in the new water — converting them into a stable, suspended form that your filter can capture and remove. One bottle per 400 gallons is all it takes; Metal Gon is engineered as a one-shot startup treatment that protects your spa from fill to drain.

Pro Tip: Always add Metal Gon before any sanitizer (chlorine, bromine, shock). Sanitizers oxidize metals on contact — the same reaction Metal Gon is designed to prevent. Adding sanitizer first locks the stain in before the sequestering agent ever gets a chance to work. Fill → Metal Gon → 30 minutes of circulation → balance pH and alkalinity → then add sanitizer.

How It Works

Dissolved metals in fill water are invisible. Iron from well sources, copper from older household pipes, and trace amounts of manganese and other metals from municipal supplies all enter your spa as colorless ions in solution. They only become a problem when they're oxidized — meaning they react with oxygen, sanitizer, or the heated, agitated environment of a hot tub. Oxidation pulls metals out of solution and deposits them as visible stains: orange rust from iron, blue-green crust from copper, and dark gray-to-black film from manganese.

Metal Gon uses a concentrated sequestering chemistry that binds to metal ions at the molecular level the moment it's added to fresh water. Once sequestered, the metals are locked into a stable, suspended form that can't oxidize and can't deposit on spa surfaces. Your filter cartridge then captures and removes them during normal circulation.

Because the chemistry works at the moment of fresh fill — when metal concentration is highest and sanitizer is not yet introduced — a single one-pint dose is typically enough to neutralize all the metal content for the entire 3-to-4-month fill cycle. No weekly maintenance is required; once Metal Gon is in, your spa is protected from metal staining until your next refill.

Pro Tip: If you don't know whether your fill water contains metals, look for two warning signs. (1) Orange or rust-colored staining on bathroom fixtures, white laundry, or appliances — that's iron. (2) Blue-green staining or a faint blue-green tint to hair after swimming — that's copper. If either applies to your home, Metal Gon isn't optional; it's the only thing standing between dissolved metals and a permanently stained spa shell.

Directions for Use

Fresh Fill / Start-Up (Standard Procedure)

  1. Clean spa surfaces and flush plumbing lines if needed before filling.
  2. Begin filling the spa with fresh water.
  3. When the spa is nearly full, pour the entire 16 oz. bottle of Metal Gon evenly into the water around the perimeter of the spa. Use one full pint per 400 gallons of spa water.
  4. Continue filling the spa to the desired water level.
  5. Allow water to circulate for a minimum of 30 minutes with the jets running before adding any other chemicals.
  6. Balance pH (7.2–7.8) and total alkalinity (80–120 ppm) after circulation.
  7. Add your sanitizer of choice. The spa is now protected against metal staining until the next refill.

For Spas Over 400 Gallons

Use one full pint per 400 gallons of spa water. A 600-gallon spa requires 1.5 pints; an 800-gallon spa requires 2 pints (one full quart equivalent).

Existing Metal Staining

Metal Gon is a preventative product, not a stain remover. It cannot reverse existing metal stains that are already bonded to the acrylic shell. If your spa already has visible iron or copper staining, you'll need to drain, surface-clean with a spa shell cleaner appropriate to your shell material, refill with fresh water, and dose Metal Gon at startup to prevent the stains from returning.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in original container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not mix with other chemicals in undiluted form — always add directly to spa water

Pro Tip: Mark your spa's next drain-and-refill date on your calendar the same day you add Metal Gon. The one-shot dose protects you until that next refill — at which point you'll start the process over with a fresh pint. A consistent 3-to-4-month refill cadence plus a fresh dose of Metal Gon at every fill is the cleanest, simplest defense against metal staining over the life of your spa.

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
