Description

FreshWater Spa Salt is the dedicated spa-grade salt formulated by Watkins Wellness for use with the FreshWater Salt System and the older Hot Spring ACE Salt Water Sanitizing System. The salt is what powers the entire system — without it, the cartridge has nothing to convert into chlorine, and your saltwater spa is just a regular tub of water.

This is a 10-pound bag, the standard size that ships with new FreshWater Salt System installs and start-up kits, and the right quantity for an initial fill on most residential hot tubs (200–500 gallons). Most owners go through 10–15 pounds in the first fill, then much less for periodic top-ups as water is added.

Why a dedicated spa salt matters. Not all salt is the same. Table salt contains iodine and anti-caking agents that can stain a spa shell and damage the salt cartridge. Water softener salt and rock salt often contain impurities, minerals, or additives that throw off water chemistry, cloud the water, or shorten the life of the titanium cell. FreshWater Spa Salt is formulated specifically for spa-grade purity — no iodine, no anti-caking agents, no metallic impurities. It dissolves cleanly and gives the salt system exactly what it's designed to work with.

Pro Tip: Substituting hardware-store or grocery salt to save a few dollars is one of the most common ways owners damage their salt system. The cost of a replacement cartridge alone is many times the cost of a year's worth of FreshWater Spa Salt — use the right product from the start.

Key Features
  • Genuine Watkins Wellness FreshWater Spa Salt — formulated by the same company that builds Hot Spring and Caldera spas
  • Spa-grade purity — no iodine, no anti-caking agents, no metals or impurities that would damage the cartridge or stain the spa shell
  • 10-pound bag — the standard size that ships with FreshWater Salt System start-up kits
  • Includes measuring scoop — calibrated for accurate 1-cup dosing
  • Dosage chart on the bag — match your spa's gallon capacity to the right amount of salt
  • Compatible with both salt systems — works with the FreshWater Salt System and the legacy Hot Spring ACE system
  • Dissolves cleanly — no cloudiness or residue when added per directions
  • Not consumed by the system — once dissolved, salt only needs to be added when water is added or replaced
How It Works

FreshWater Spa Salt is sodium chloride — the same chemical compound as table salt, but in a purified spa-grade form. When you add it to your spa water, it dissolves completely and separates into sodium ions and chloride ions, which stay suspended in the water.

From there, the salt system cartridge does the work:

  • The cartridge runs an electrical current through the salty water across its titanium electrodes
  • The current converts chloride ions into pure chlorine — the same sanitizer you'd add manually, just generated automatically and on demand
  • The chlorine sanitizes the water — destroying bacteria, viruses, and contaminants
  • Used chlorine eventually breaks back down — and the chloride ions return to the salt cycle to be converted again

Because the salt itself isn't consumed in this process, a properly salted spa only needs more salt when water is added (after evaporation, top-offs, or a drain-and-refill). The cartridge wears out — the salt does not.

Pro Tip: A common myth is that salt-system spas "feel salty" like ocean water. They don't. The salt concentration in a FreshWater Salt System spa is roughly 1,750 ppm— about 1/20th the saltiness of the ocean, and similar to the salinity of a human tear. The water feels softer, not salty.

Directions for Use

Initial Fill (New Spa or Fresh Drain-and-Refill)

  1. Fill the spa with fresh water and bring it up to operating temperature. Water should be circulating before adding salt.
  2. Balance the water first — adjust alkalinity to 80–120 ppm, then pH to 7.2–7.8. Add calcium hardness if below 150 ppm.
  3. Reference the dosage chart on the bag — match your spa's gallon capacity (printed on the spa shell or in your owner manual) to the recommended salt amount.
  4. Add salt one cup at a time using the included measuring scoop. Distribute around the spa rather than dumping in one spot.
  5. Run the spa with the cover off in circulation mode for several hours to fully dissolve the salt.
  6. Test salt level with FreshWater Salt Test Strips. Target is approximately 1,750 ppm (1,500–2,000 ppm acceptable range).
  7. Adjust if needed — add more salt if reading is low, or dilute by removing some water and adding fresh if reading is high.

Topping Off Salt

Add salt as needed when:

  • Water is added to compensate for evaporation or splash-out
  • Salt test reading drops below 1,500 ppm
  • The spa controller indicates a low salt level

For top-offs, add 1–2 cups at a time, dissolve fully, and retest before adding more. Over-salting is just as problematic as under-salting — it can damage equipment and force a partial drain.

Storage

  • Store the bag in a dry location — moisture causes clumping
  • Reseal between uses — fold the bag closed and clip or use the measuring scoop to keep moisture out
  • Indefinite shelf life — pure sodium chloride does not expire if kept dry and sealed
  • Keep away from children and pets — while non-toxic in small quantities, large ingestion is harmful

Pro Tip: Always test your salt level before adding more. The single most common salt system mistake is over-salting because owners assume "more is better." The cartridge generates chlorine based on the current setting, not the salt concentration — adding extra salt does not produce extra chlorine, it just stresses the equipment.

Compatibility

FreshWater Spa Salt is formulated for two Watkins Wellness saltwater sanitizing systems. Both use a titanium-electrode cartridge to convert salt into chlorine, and both require the same spa-grade salt purity.

Compatible Systems

  • FreshWater® Salt System — the current generation, available on Hot Spring Highlife / Limelight and Caldera Utopia / Paradise models
  • Hot Spring® ACE® Salt Water Sanitizing System — the prior generation system, found on older Hot Spring models

Compatible Spa Lines

  • Hot Spring® Highlife® Collection — Salt System-equipped models
  • Hot Spring® Limelight® Collection — Salt System-equipped models
  • Caldera® Utopia® Series — Salt System-equipped models
  • Caldera® Paradise® Series — Salt System-equipped models
  • Older Hot Spring spas equipped with the ACE Salt Water System

Not For

  • Spas without a salt system installed — adding salt to a spa without a salt cell does nothing useful and may increase corrosion on metal components
  • Pool salt systems — the dosing is calibrated for spa volume, not pool volume; pool salt requirements are entirely different
  • Other manufacturers' spa salt systems (Sundance, Jacuzzi, Bullfrog, Marquis, etc.) — those systems have their own brand-specific salt requirements; check your spa's manual

Works Alongside

  • FreshWater Salt System Replacement Cartridge — the cell that actually converts the salt into chlorine
  • FreshWater Salt Test Strips — for measuring salt level when topping off or refilling
  • FreshWater Vanishing Act Calcium Remover — keeps calcium hardness in range so the salt system operates efficiently
  • FreshWater pH/Alkalinity Up and Down — keeps water balanced so the cartridge isn't working overtime

FreshWater® Brand FAQs

Do I have to own a Hot Spring or Caldera spa to use FreshWater products?

No. FreshWater chemicals, test strips, and most accessories work on any residential hot tub or spa, regardless of brand. The FreshWater Salt System and FreshWater IQ Smart Monitoring System are the exceptions — those are designed specifically for compatible Watkins Wellness spas (Hot Spring Highlife and Limelight, Caldera Utopia and Paradise). Everything else in the line is universal.

How is FreshWater different from other spa chemical brands?

Most spa water care brands are formulated by chemical companies and sold across hundreds of unrelated spa models. FreshWater is formulated by the same engineering team that designs Hot Spring and Caldera hot tubs — so the chemistry is built to match what real spa equipment actually needs. Dosing recommendations, concentration levels, and pH targets are calibrated against working spas, not a generic spec sheet. That precision tends to mean less chemical waste and fewer balance problems over the life of a fill.

Can I mix FreshWater products with other brands like Leisure Time or SpaGuard?

In most cases, yes — but with one important caveat. Don't mix sanitizer systems. A chlorine spa should stay on chlorine; a bromine spa should stay on bromine. Mixing sanitizer chemistries can create unwanted byproducts and unstable readings. Balancers (pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness) and supporting products like defoamers, clarifiers, and stain & scale defenders are generally compatible across brands. When in doubt, call us or bring a water sample to one of our showrooms before mixing chemistries.

How long do FreshWater chemicals last in storage?

Unopened, most FreshWater liquid and granular chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 2 years from manufacture when stored cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight. Test strips last about 1 to 2 years if the bottle stays sealed with its desiccant pack between uses. Chlorine-based products lose strength faster than balancers, so rotate stock — oldest first — and avoid buying more than a single season's supply at a time. The expiration date is printed on the container.

Are FreshWater products safe for sensitive skin?

When dosed correctly and the water is properly balanced, yes. Most skin and eye irritation in hot tubs isn't caused by chlorine or bromine itself — it's caused by chloramines(used-up sanitizer that hasn't been oxidized) or by water that's outside the proper pH range. Owners with sensitive skin often do well on the FreshWater Salt System (lower active chlorine residual) or on a mineral-supported chlorine program. If skin irritation is an ongoing issue, see our Eye/Skin Irritation Problem Solver page.

Can FreshWater chemicals be returned by mail?

Some can, some can't — it depends on whether the product is classified as hazardous material (hazmat) by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Test strips, defoamers, calcium removers, clarifiers, and most balancers are non-hazmat and can be returned by mail. Chlorinating granules, bromine products, and pH/alkalinity down (a regulated acid)are hazmat and cannot ship back by mail under federal law — but they can be returned in person at any LTI showroom. See our Returns on Hazardous Materials page for the full list.

About FreshWater®

FreshWater® is the water care brand from Watkins Wellness — the parent company of Hot Spring, Caldera, and Freeflow Spas, and one of the largest manufacturers of premium hot tubs in the world. Watkins has been engineering spas and water care chemistry for over forty years, and FreshWater is the line they developed specifically to keep their own equipment running clean, clear, and properly balanced.

What that means for owners: FreshWater chemicals, sanitizers, test strips, and accessories are formulated and dosed for the same shells, jets, heaters, and circulation systems Watkins builds. Active ingredients, pH targets, and concentration levels are calibrated against real spa equipment — not generic pool chemistry repackaged for hot tubs. The result is a product line that works as well in a Hot Spring or Caldera spa as it does in any other residential hot tub on the market.

The FreshWater catalog covers everything from routine maintenance to advanced water care technology:

  • The FreshWater® Salt System — a sanitizer system that automatically generates chlorine from a salt cartridge, lasting up to a full year between water changes
  • The FreshWater® IQ Smart Monitoring System — sensor and controller that read chlorine, pH, and salt levels and display them on the spa's topside control
  • Sanitizers and sanitizer support — chlorinating granules, Ag+ Silver Ion Sanitizer, mineral cartridges
  • Balancers — pH/Alkalinity Up, pH/Alkalinity Down, calcium boosters
