Description

FreshWater MPS Test Strips are the dedicated dip test for spas running on a non-chlorine shock program — also known as MPS-based water care. A single 2-second dip measures three parameters at once: MPS (monopersulfate) level, pH, and total alkalinity. For owners who use MPS as their primary oxidizer, this is the diagnostic that confirms the program is working.

MPS (potassium monopersulfate) is the active ingredient in non-chlorine shock. Unlike chlorine — which both disinfects and oxidizes — MPS only oxidizes. It breaks down body oils, sweat, sunscreen, and other organic load without adding chlorine or raising chloramine smell. Owners pair it with a smaller chlorine residual (often via Ag+ Silver Ion programs or low-output salt systems) to get the comfort of a "low chlorine" spa without sacrificing sanitization.

This bottle contains 50 individually accessed strips sealed in a moisture-resistant flip-top container — roughly a year of weekly testing for most owners, or six months if you test before every soak.

Pro Tip: This strip does not test for chlorine, bromine, or hardness. If your spa uses chlorine or bromine as the primary sanitizer, you need FreshWater 5-Way Test Strips instead — those test chlorine, bromine, pH, alkalinity, and hardness. The MPS strip is for MPS-based programs specifically.

What's in the Box
  • 1 bottle of FreshWater MPS Test Strips — 50 strips in a sealed, moisture-resistant flip-top container
  • Color-match comparison chart — printed on the back of the bottle, calibrated for MPS, pH, and alkalinity readings
  • Desiccant pack — sealed inside the bottle to keep remaining strips dry between uses

Key Features
  • Tests three parameters at once — MPS oxidizer level, pH, and total alkalinity
  • 2-second dip time — fastest read of any FreshWater test strip
  • Color-match chart on the bottle — no app, no booklet to lose
  • Universal sanitizer system compatibility — works with FreshWater Salt, ACE, silver ion, granular chlorine, bromine, and any program using MPS as an oxidizer
  • 50 strips per bottle — approximately a year of weekly testing
  • Sealed bottle with desiccant — strips stay accurate through the full pack when the cap is closed promptly
  • Made by Watkins Wellness — calibrated to the same MPS targets the manufacturer specifies for its water care methods
  • Designed for MPS-based programs — fills a specific testing need that 5-Way strips don't cover
How It Works

FreshWater MPS Test Strips have three reagent pads, each calibrated for a different parameter. When dipped in spa water, the pads react with specific chemical markers and change color:

  • MPS pad — reacts with active monopersulfate, shifting through a color range that maps to ppm
  • pH pad — shifts through orange, red, and purple based on water acidity
  • Total Alkalinity pad — shifts from yellow through green based on buffering capacity

After the brief 2-second dip, all three pads develop their color in seconds. Match the pad colors to the chart on the bottle to read your levels.

Why test for MPS specifically: unlike chlorine, which dissipates predictably over hours, MPS levels can drop quickly during heavy use — a single intense soaking session can deplete MPS faster than you'd expect. Without testing, you can end up oxidizing nothing for days at a time and assume the program is failing when it's just under-dosed. The MPS reading tells you when to add more shock.

Target ranges:

  • MPS: 5–10 ppm (varies slightly by manufacturer; reference your water care guide)
  • pH: 7.2–7.8
  • Total Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm

Pro Tip: MPS readings can be affected by oxidizers in the water beyond just MPS — including residual chlorine, bromine, and even high levels of dissolved oxygen from aeration. If your reading seems higher than expected after a soaking session, recheck after 24 hours of normal circulation. The reading often settles into expected ranges as other oxidizers clear.

Directions for Use

Testing Your Water

  1. Remove one strip from the bottle and reseal the cap immediately. Moisture in the bottle is the most common cause of expired strips.
  2. Immerse the strip in the spa water for 2 seconds.
  3. Remove the strip with the pads facing up.
  4. Shake the strip once to remove excess water.
  5. Hold the strip horizontally (pads facing up) for a few seconds while colors develop.
  6. Compare each pad to the chart on the back of the bottle. Read in good light, away from direct sunlight or harsh shadow.
  7. Record the reading or photograph it for reference.

How Often to Test

  • Weekly as part of routine water testing for most MPS-program owners
  • After every shock dose to confirm MPS reached the target range
  • After heavy use — multiple bathers, parties — to confirm the program is keeping up with oxidation demand
  • Anytime water looks cloudy or smells "off" — low MPS is often the cause in non-chlorine programs
  • Before every shock decision — confirm whether you actually need to dose more MPS or whether existing MPS hasn't been depleted yet

Interpreting Your Reading

  • MPS below 5 ppm — dose more MPS (FreshWater MPS Shock Oxidizer or similar)
  • MPS 5–10 ppm — proper range. No action needed.
  • MPS above 10 ppm — typically fine for short periods, but high concentrations can be irritating to eyes and skin during use; wait for natural decay before soaking
  • pH outside 7.2–7.8 — adjust with pH/Alkalinity Up or Down
  • Alkalinity outside 80–120 ppm — adjust with pH/Alkalinity Up or Down

Storage

  • Keep the bottle tightly closed between uses
  • Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, humidity, and chemical fumes
  • Do not store in the spa cabinet or any location that gets damp
  • Note the expiration date printed on the bottle. Strips typically remain accurate for 1–2 years from manufacture if stored correctly.
  • Never touch the reagent pads with wet fingers, and never return an unused strip to the bottle.

Pro Tip: If you're running an MPS + Ag+ (silver ion) program, MPS depletion is the #1 cause of cloudy water in those spas. The silver ions handle bacterial inhibition but produce no oxidation. When MPS drops too low, organic load accumulates and water turns cloudy regardless of how the rest of the chemistry looks. Test MPS first when troubleshooting cloudy water on a non-chlorine program.

FreshWater® Brand FAQs

Do I have to own a Hot Spring or Caldera spa to use FreshWater products?

No. FreshWater chemicals, test strips, and most accessories work on any residential hot tub or spa, regardless of brand. The FreshWater Salt System and FreshWater IQ Smart Monitoring System are the exceptions — those are designed specifically for compatible Watkins Wellness spas (Hot Spring Highlife and Limelight, Caldera Utopia and Paradise). Everything else in the line is universal.

How is FreshWater different from other spa chemical brands?

Most spa water care brands are formulated by chemical companies and sold across hundreds of unrelated spa models. FreshWater is formulated by the same engineering team that designs Hot Spring and Caldera hot tubs — so the chemistry is built to match what real spa equipment actually needs. Dosing recommendations, concentration levels, and pH targets are calibrated against working spas, not a generic spec sheet. That precision tends to mean less chemical waste and fewer balance problems over the life of a fill.

Can I mix FreshWater products with other brands like Leisure Time or SpaGuard?

In most cases, yes — but with one important caveat. Don't mix sanitizer systems. A chlorine spa should stay on chlorine; a bromine spa should stay on bromine. Mixing sanitizer chemistries can create unwanted byproducts and unstable readings. Balancers (pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness) and supporting products like defoamers, clarifiers, and stain & scale defenders are generally compatible across brands. When in doubt, call us or bring a water sample to one of our showrooms before mixing chemistries.

How long do FreshWater chemicals last in storage?

Unopened, most FreshWater liquid and granular chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 2 years from manufacture when stored cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight. Test strips last about 1 to 2 years if the bottle stays sealed with its desiccant pack between uses. Chlorine-based products lose strength faster than balancers, so rotate stock — oldest first — and avoid buying more than a single season's supply at a time. The expiration date is printed on the container.

Are FreshWater products safe for sensitive skin?

When dosed correctly and the water is properly balanced, yes. Most skin and eye irritation in hot tubs isn't caused by chlorine or bromine itself — it's caused by chloramines(used-up sanitizer that hasn't been oxidized) or by water that's outside the proper pH range. Owners with sensitive skin often do well on the FreshWater Salt System (lower active chlorine residual) or on a mineral-supported chlorine program. If skin irritation is an ongoing issue, see our Eye/Skin Irritation Problem Solver page.

Can FreshWater chemicals be returned by mail?

Some can, some can't — it depends on whether the product is classified as hazardous material (hazmat) by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Test strips, defoamers, calcium removers, clarifiers, and most balancers are non-hazmat and can be returned by mail. Chlorinating granules, bromine products, and pH/alkalinity down (a regulated acid)are hazmat and cannot ship back by mail under federal law — but they can be returned in person at any LTI showroom. See our Returns on Hazardous Materials page for the full list.

About FreshWater®

FreshWater® is the water care brand from Watkins Wellness — the parent company of Hot Spring, Caldera, and Freeflow Spas, and one of the largest manufacturers of premium hot tubs in the world. Watkins has been engineering spas and water care chemistry for over forty years, and FreshWater is the line they developed specifically to keep their own equipment running clean, clear, and properly balanced.

What that means for owners: FreshWater chemicals, sanitizers, test strips, and accessories are formulated and dosed for the same shells, jets, heaters, and circulation systems Watkins builds. Active ingredients, pH targets, and concentration levels are calibrated against real spa equipment — not generic pool chemistry repackaged for hot tubs. The result is a product line that works as well in a Hot Spring or Caldera spa as it does in any other residential hot tub on the market.

The FreshWater catalog covers everything from routine maintenance to advanced water care technology:

  • The FreshWater® Salt System — a sanitizer system that automatically generates chlorine from a salt cartridge, lasting up to a full year between water changes
  • The FreshWater® IQ Smart Monitoring System — sensor and controller that read chlorine, pH, and salt levels and display them on the spa's topside control
  • Sanitizers and sanitizer support — chlorinating granules, Ag+ Silver Ion Sanitizer, mineral cartridges
  • Balancers — pH/Alkalinity Up, pH/Alkalinity Down, calcium boosters
