Description

Leisure Time Filter Clean is a concentrated overnight-soak filter cleaning solution formulated for spa and hot tub cartridge filters. The liquid concentrate dilutes into a soaking bath that penetrates deep into pleated filter media — dissolving the body oils, lotion residue, sunscreen, sweat, grease, calcium scale, and mineral buildup that a garden hose rinse can't touch. One quart bottle is enough for multiple deep cleans, which is the maintenance task most hot tub owners skip the longest and pay for the most.

Cartridge filters look clean after a hose rinse. They aren't. The pleated polyester or polypropylene fabric that filters your spa water is engineered with microscopic pores that trap particles 20 microns and smaller — and once those pores load up with oils, lotions, and dissolved organics, no amount of surface rinsing will get them out. A filter that looks clean from the outside can be operating at 30–50% of its rated capacity inside, which means cloudy water, higher sanitizer demand, and a spa that never quite gets "clear" no matter how much chemistry you add.

Filter Clean fixes that. The soak-based formula gives active ingredients hours to penetrate the pleat depth and break down the contaminants chemical-rinse products can't reach. Used quarterly — typically aligned with each drain-and-refill cycle — Filter Clean restores filter cartridges to near-new performance, extends their usable life by months or years, and pays for itself many times over by delaying cartridge replacement.

Pro Tip: The smart maintenance cadence is rinse weekly, spray monthly, deep-soak quarterly. Garden hose rinse every week to clear surface debris, a quick spray-on cleaner (like Leisure Time Instant Cartridge Clean) once a month to dissolve light surface oils, and a full overnight Filter Clean soak every 3–4 months at drain-and-refill. Owners who follow that pattern get 2–3 years out of cartridges that owners who only rinse get 6–8 months out of.

How It Works

A spa cartridge filter is essentially a pleated tube of microporous fabric — typically polyester or polypropylene — designed to maximize surface area within a compact form factor. Water flows through the pleats, and contaminants get trapped in the pores of the media. Over time, two distinct types of buildup accumulate that a simple rinse can't address.

The first is organic loading: body oils, lotion residue, sunscreen, sweat, hair products, and dissolved organics from bathers. These contaminants are oil-based and don't rinse away with water — in fact, water just beads off them. They coat the filter fibers, block the pores from the inside, and dramatically reduce filtration efficiency. The second is mineral scale: calcium and magnesium deposits that crystallize directly onto filter fibers, especially in hard water regions or spas using mineral sanitizer systems. Mineral scale is rock-hard and physically blocks pore flow.

Filter Clean uses a blend of surfactants and mild chelating agents that attack both problems simultaneously. The surfactants emulsify organic deposits — breaking the bond between oil-based contaminants and the filter media — so they release into the soak solution. The chelating agents dissolve calcium scale by binding to mineral ions and pulling them off the filter fibers. The 3-hour minimum soak time (overnight ideal) gives the chemistry time to penetrate fully into the pleat depth, which is what separates a real deep clean from a surface rinse. After soaking, a thorough high-pressure rinse flushes out the loosened contaminants, and the filter returns to near-new flow characteristics.

Pro Tip: Most hot tubs come with two filter cartridges from the factory — and there's a reason. Rotate them. Run one in the spa while the other is deep-soaking, drying, and resting in storage. When you do your quarterly Filter Clean treatment, swap the dry cartridge in and put the dirty one in the soak bucket. A 24-hour dry period between uses lets the polyester fibers fully shed any remaining moisture and contaminants, which extends cartridge life significantly. If your spa only came with one cartridge, ordering a second pays for itself within a year.

Directions for Use

Overnight Deep Soak (Quarterly Maintenance)

  1. Drain the spa (Filter Clean treatments are typically aligned with the 3–4 month drain-and-refill cycle).
  2. Remove the cartridge filter(s) from the filter housing.
  3. Rinse the cartridge thoroughly with a garden hose to remove all loose surface debris — leaves, hair, large particles. This step is essential; surface debris reduces the effectiveness of the soak.
  4. Prepare the soaking solution: add 16 oz. of Filter Clean to 4 gallons of water in a clean plastic bucket, plastic bin, or trash can large enough to fully submerge the cartridge upright.
  5. Do not use galvanized aluminum or porcelain containers — the cleaning chemistry can react with these surfaces.
  6. Place the cartridge upright in the solution. Make sure it is fully submerged.
  7. Soak for a minimum of 3 hours. For maximum effectiveness — and for cartridges that haven't been deep-cleaned in a long time — soak overnight (12+ hours).
  8. Remove the cartridge and rinse thoroughly with a high-pressure nozzle, working from the inside out and from the top down. Continue rinsing until water runs completely clear and no foam appears.
  9. If possible, allow the cartridge to air-dry fully before reinstalling. A 24-hour dry period further restores filter performance.
  10. Reinstall the dry cartridge and refill the spa.

Heavy-Buildup or Neglected Filters

For filters that haven't been deep-cleaned in 6+ months, or that show heavy scale buildup, extend the soak to a full 24 hours. After the first rinse, inspect the pleats — if discoloration remains, repeat the soak with fresh solution.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in original container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not mix with other spa chemicals in the bottle, bucket, or any storage container
  • Dispose of used soaking solution per local guidelines — do not pour into the spa or back into the bottle

Pro Tip: Filter cartridges have a finite lifespan even with perfect maintenance — typically 12–24 months for residential spa use. Watch for the signs that a deep clean isn't bringing the filter back: persistent flow restriction, pleats that look matted or compressed instead of crisp, fiber bands that have torn or unraveled, or visible permanent staining that doesn't release in a 24-hour soak. When you see any of those, it's time to replace the cartridge — not deep-clean it again. Cleaning a worn-out filter is putting good labor after a bad part.

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
