Description

Leisure Time Enzyme is a natural enzyme-based water treatment formulated specifically for spas and hot tubs. Active chemistry: a proprietary blend of natural enzymes engineered to break down the oils, lotions, sunscreens, body residues, and other non-living organic materials that build up in spa water and create that frustrating scum line at the waterline. Unlike chemical oxidizers or surfactant clarifiers, enzymes work biologically — digesting organic contaminants at the molecular level rather than masking, oxidizing, or filtering them.

Every bather introduces roughly the same invisible cargo into the spa: body oils, sunscreen, lotion residue, hair products, perfume, sweat, and microscopic skin cells. Sanitizers (chlorine or bromine) kill bacteria but don't efficiently break down the oily, hydrocarbon-based residues. Shock products oxidize a portion of the organic load but leave behind the heavier oils. Over weeks of use, those residues accumulate at the waterline as a visible grey or brown scum band, embed into filter cartridges, and produce the "musty hot tub smell" that no amount of additional sanitizer seems to fix.

Enzyme attacks the problem at its source. The natural enzyme blend chemically digests oils and organic compounds — converting them into smaller, simpler molecules that the filter and sanitizer can finally remove. Used weekly, Enzyme prevents scum lines from forming in the first place, extends the time between deep filter cleans, eliminates the underlying cause of musty odors, and reduces total chemical demand by handling organic load with biology instead of chlorine or shock.

Pro Tip: Enzyme isn't a replacement for sanitizer or shock — it's a complement. Sanitizer (chlorine or bromine) handles the living threats: bacteria, viruses, algae. Shock handles acute oxidation: chloramines, organic spikes, post-party cleanup. Enzyme handles the slow, persistent residue load: the oils and lotions that build up between drain-and-refill cycles. Each product does what the others can't do well, and a spa using all three needs less of each individually than a spa relying on one alone.

How It Works

Enzymes are biological catalysts — proteins that accelerate specific chemical reactions without being consumed in the process. The natural enzyme blend in Leisure Time Enzyme contains lipase-class enzymes (which break down fats and oils) along with other organic-targeting enzymes that work together to digest the carbon-based residues bathers introduce into spa water. The process is the same one used in laundry detergents, contact lens cleaners, and food digestion — biology applied to the problem of breaking large oily molecules into smaller, water-soluble fragments.

When Enzyme enters spa water, the enzymes immediately begin attacking the oily contaminants suspended in the water and clinging to surfaces. They cleave the long-chain fatty acid molecules in body oils, sunscreen, and lotion into shorter chains that are no longer hydrophobic — meaning they no longer stick together at the surface as a scum line, and they no longer cling to filter media as a sticky film. Once broken down, these fragments can be oxidized by sanitizer, captured by the filter, or simply diluted into the water column where they remain harmless.

Unlike chemical clarifiers (which clump particles for filtration) or oxidizers (which destroy organics through chemical reaction), enzymes work continuously as long as they're present in the water. A single weekly dose maintains a working enzyme population that processes new organic load as fast as bathers introduce it. The trade-off is that enzymes don't survive forever — they're gradually consumed by sanitizer reactions and lost through filtration — which is why weekly redosing is the standard maintenance pattern rather than monthly or quarterly.

Pro Tip: If your spa already has a visible scum line, don't expect a single enzyme dose to make it disappear overnight. Existing scum is an accumulation of weeks (or months) of organic buildup. The label's daily-dose schedule until scum is gone (1 oz per 250 gallons daily) is the right protocol — most spas clear in 5–10 days of consecutive dosing, and then you transition to weekly maintenance to prevent the scum from coming back. Patience and consistency beat heroic single-dose treatments.

Directions for Use

Weekly Maintenance (Standard Use)

  1. With the spa's circulation system running, slowly pour Enzyme directly into the spa water around the perimeter.
  2. Use 1 oz. of Enzyme per 250 gallons of spa water (approximately 1.5 oz. for a typical 400-gallon residential spa).
  3. Continue normal circulation. No waiting period — the spa is usable immediately if desired.
  4. Repeat weekly to prevent scum line buildup and maintain clean water between drain-and-refill cycles.

Existing Scum Line Treatment

  1. For spas with a visible scum line at the waterline:
  2. Add 1 oz. of Enzyme per 250 gallons of spa water daily with the circulation system running.
  3. Repeat daily until the scum line is no longer visible (typically 5–10 days).
  4. For especially stubborn or aged scum lines, wipe the waterline with a clean spa-safe sponge during treatment to physically lift loosened residue.
  5. Once the scum line is gone, transition to standard weekly maintenance dosing.

Fresh Fill / Start-Up

Add 1 oz. per 250 gallons within the first 24 hours of a fresh fill, alongside your start-up balance and sanitization routine. Starting Enzyme dosing at fresh fill prevents scum lines from ever forming during the fill cycle, rather than waiting for them to develop.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in original container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use
  • Protect from extreme heat and freezing — enzyme activity degrades at temperature extremes
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Use within 12 months of opening for best enzyme potency

Pro Tip: If your spa always seems to develop a scum line within days of a fresh fill, the culprit is usually one of three sources you can address before getting in: residue on bathing suits from laundry detergent, lotions and sunscreen applied within an hour of soaking, and hair products. A pre-soak rinse-off (a quick shower without soap before getting in) eliminates 70% of the organic load before it ever enters the water. Enzyme handles what gets through; the pre-soak rinse handles what shouldn't get in at all.

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
