Description

Leisure Time Bright & Clear is a fast-acting liquid clarifier formulated specifically for spas and hot tubs. Active chemistry: a proprietary blend of clarifying polymers engineered to perform in heated, agitated water — exactly the environment where pool clarifiers tend to fail. Used weekly, Bright & Clear restores sparkle to dull water, helps your filter work at peak efficiency, and keeps the spa visibly clear between drain-and-refill cycles.

Cloudy spa water is one of the most common complaints hot tub owners face — and it's also one of the most misunderstood. The cloudiness isn't usually a sanitizer problem; it's a filtration problem. Spa water becomes cloudy when millions of microscopic particles — body oils, lotion residue, sweat, soap, dead skin cells, sunscreen, mineral dust — accumulate faster than the filter can remove them. Most of those particles are too small to be physically caught by a standard cartridge filter. They just pass right through, recirculate, and build up until the water turns hazy, dull, or milky.

Bright & Clear solves the filtration gap by chemically binding those tiny particles together into clumps big enough for the filter to actually catch. The polymer chemistry works in minutes — there's no waiting period before you can use the spa — and a single ounce dose typically restores clarity within one filter cycle. Used weekly, it keeps water consistently clear, reduces sanitizer demand by removing organic load, and extends the productive life of your filter cartridge.

Pro Tip: If your water has been cloudy for more than a week, the right sequence is shock first, clarifier second. Renew (or your preferred non-chlorine shock) oxidizes the organic load that's contributing to the cloudiness; Bright & Clear then clumps the remaining inorganic particles so the filter can catch them. Doing it in reverse order leaves oxidation byproducts in the water and limits how clear you can actually get.

How It Works

A spa filter cartridge is rated to physically trap particles down to a certain size — typically 20 to 50 microns for residential spa filters. But the particles that cause cloudy water are smaller than that. Body oils, lotion residue, microscopic skin flakes, dissolved organics, and mineral fines often measure in single-digit microns or less. They pass straight through the filter media every time the water cycles, accumulate in the water column, and scatter light. That's what you see as haze, dullness, or milky tint.

Bright & Clear uses a process called flocculation. The clarifying polymers carry an electrical charge that attracts oppositely charged suspended particles, pulling them together into larger aggregates called "flocs." A 5-micron particle floating invisibly in the water column becomes part of a 50-micron clump that the filter can physically grab and hold. Each pass through the filter removes more flocs, and within a single filter cycle, the water typically goes from cloudy to sparkling clear.

Because the polymers are designed specifically for the hot, aerated, jet-driven environment of a spa, they don't break down or lose effectiveness the way generic pool clarifiers can at 100°F+ temperatures. They also don't interfere with sanitizers, pH balance, or alkalinity — Bright & Clear acts purely mechanically, so it slots into any water care routine without complicating the chemistry.

Pro Tip: A clarifier makes your filter work harder, which means it loads up faster. If you use Bright & Clear weekly, check your filter every two weeks — rinse it with a hose at the first sign of pressure increase or reduced flow. A clogged filter packed with flocs can't trap any new ones, and you'll see cloudy water return in days even if you keep dosing clarifier. Filter maintenance and clarifier use go hand in hand.

Directions for Use

Weekly Maintenance

  1. Turn off the spa's circulation system.
  2. Turn on the air blower or spa jets (high agitation helps the polymers disperse evenly).
  3. Add Bright & Clear directly to the spa water. Use 2 oz. for spas up to 800 gallons (covers nearly every residential spa). Use 4 oz. for spas over 800 gallons.
  4. Allow the blower or jets to run for a few minutes to fully disperse the clarifier.
  5. Turn the filter system back on and let it run until the water is bright and clear — typically within one full filter cycle.

Cloudy Water Recovery

  1. If water is significantly cloudy, first shock with Renew (or your preferred non-chlorine shock) and circulate for 15 minutes with the cover off.
  2. Then add 2–4 oz. of Bright & Clear per 800 gallons of spa water.
  3. Turn on spa jets and circulate for 30 minutes.
  4. Allow the filter to run continuously until clarity returns.
  5. Check and rinse the filter cartridge afterward — it will have captured a large load of flocs.

No Waiting Required

Unlike shock treatments or sanitizer adjustments, Bright & Clear has no required wait time before using the spa. You can dose the clarifier and get in immediately if you want — though water clarity will continue to improve as the filter runs over the next 30–60 minutes.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in original container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use
  • Protect from freezing — liquid polymer chemistry can lose effectiveness if frozen
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not mix with other chemicals in undiluted form — always add directly to spa water

Pro Tip: If you've added Bright & Clear and your water is still cloudy after 24 hours, the issue isn't more clarifier — it's almost always one of three things: (1) the filter cartridge is too dirty to capture flocs and needs a deep clean or replacement, (2) pH and alkalinity are out of range and need to be balanced first, or (3) you're due for a drain and refill. More clarifier on top of any of those won't help; address the root cause first.

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
