Description

SpaGuard Rapid-Dissolve pH Decreaser Tabs lower high pH in spa and hot tub water the easy way — a clean, dry tablet instead of a liquid acid or loose powder. They're a compressed version of SpaGuard's traditional pH Decreaser (sodium bisulfate), engineered into a tab that dissolves by erosion in just a few minutes in the filter compartment. Each tab lowers pH by roughly 0.1–0.2 units, which makes dialing in your water precise and predictable.

pH is the most active number in spa care — it tends to rise day by day as bathers, products, and aeration affect the water, so a pH-decreasing product is a genuine must-have. When pH climbs too high, the water turns cloudy, scale starts to form, and your sanitizer becomes less effective. These tabs bring pH back into the comfortable range, protecting your spa and swim-spa equipment and keeping the water comfortable for soaking — all without handling messy liquid acid.

For owners who adjust pH often, the tab format is especially convenient: precise, mess-free, and as simple as dropping the right number of tabs into the filter compartment.

Pro Tip: A dry tablet is safer and easier to handle than liquid muriatic-type acids — no splashing, no fumes, no measuring a corrosive liquid. Because each tab moves pH a controlled 0.1–0.2 units, you can sneak up on your target a tab at a time instead of overshooting.

SpaGuard®

What's in the Box
  • 1 x SpaGuard Rapid-Dissolve pH Decreaser Tabs — 1.25 lb (erosion-style tablets)

Note: These tabs lower pH (and total alkalinity). If you need to raise pH instead, that's a pH increaser. Apply tabs to the filter compartment, not the footwell, and don't leave undissolved material on spa surfaces. Keep the bottle tightly sealed and store in a cool, dry place away from other chemicals.

Key Features
  • Quickly lowers pH — brings high spa water pH back into the comfortable range.
  • Precise 0.1–0.2 unit adjustment — one tab per 250 gallons for controlled, predictable dosing.
  • Safer and easier than liquid acid — a clean dry tablet, no splashing or measuring corrosive liquids.
  • Provides soaker comfort — balanced pH keeps water gentle on skin and eyes.
  • Protects equipment and surfaces — prevents the scale and cloudiness that come with high pH.
  • Convenient for frequent adjusters — easy to dose a tab at a time, as often as needed.
How It Works

pH measures how acidic or basic your water is, with the spa target around 7.2–7.6. The pH of a spa naturally tends to drift upward over time, and when it rises too high the water becomes basic — minerals fall out of solution and form scale, the water clouds, and a growing share of your chlorine converts to a form that can't sanitize effectively. Lowering pH back into range corrects all of that.

These tabs are sodium bisulfate, a dry acid, compressed into an erosion-style tablet. Placed in the filter compartment with the jets running, each tab dissolves within a few minutes and releases acidity that neutralizes excess, lowering pH (and total alkalinity) by a controlled 0.1–0.2 units per tab per 250 gallons. Unlike some of SpaGuard's other rapid-dissolve tabs, these don't effervesce — they dissolve steadily by erosion — but they still disperse quickly. The controlled per-tab adjustment is what lets you reach your target precisely instead of overshooting into low, corrosive pH.

Pro Tip: Get total alkalinity in range first. Alkalinity buffers pH, so it should read at least around 125 ppm before you fine-tune pH — otherwise pH will keep drifting and you'll be dosing constantly. Balance alkalinity, then adjust pH a tab at a time.

Directions for Use
  1. Test the pH of your spa or swim-spa water. The target range is 7.2–7.6. Confirm total alkalinity is at least 125 ppm before adding this product.
  2. Determine the number of tabs needed from the chart on the label, based on your current pH. As a guide, 1 tab per 250 gallons lowers pH about 0.1–0.2 units.
  3. With gloves, apply the tab(s) directly to the filter compartment with the jet pump running, when the spa is not occupied. Do not apply to the footwell — it dissolves more slowly there and isn't recommended.
  4. Retest pH after at least 15 minutes and adjust as necessary.
  5. If applying directly to the water, brush away any undissolved material; never leave undissolved tabs on spa surfaces.

Pro Tip: Always follow the dosing chart and directions on your bottle's label, which take precedence over any general guidance. Apply to the filter compartment with jets running for the fastest, most even dissolution.

Compatibility

pH Decreaser Tabs are a water balancer that works with whatever sanitizing system you use:

  • Chlorine spas — fully compatible.
  • Bromine spas — fully compatible.
  • Ozone systems — compatible as part of a balanced-water routine.
  • Saltwater / mineral systems — compatible.
  • Spas and swim spas — formulated for the smaller volumes and higher temperatures of spas.
  • All spa surfaces — safe for use with all common spa surfaces (don't leave undissolved tabs resting on surfaces).

Important: pH Decreaser Tabs are a balancer, not a sanitizer. They correct water chemistry but don't sanitize — use alongside your regular sanitizer and shock.

SpaGuard® Brand FAQs

What is SpaGuard?

SpaGuard is a professional-grade brand of spa and hot tub water care products — sanitizers, shocks, balancers, and water enhancers — formulated specifically for spas rather than adapted from pool chemicals. The line is designed to work together as a complete system for clean, clear, comfortable water.

Who makes SpaGuard?

SpaGuard is part of the BioGuard family of water care brands, a long-established name in pool and spa chemistry. That backing means the formulas are professionally developed and tested, with a reputation built over decades in the industry.

What water care systems does SpaGuard offer?

SpaGuard supports three complete care methods: a chlorine system, a bromine system, and the Soft Soak TRIO system. Each is a coordinated set of products, so you can match your routine to the sanitizer you prefer.

What makes SpaGuard different from generic spa chemicals?

SpaGuard products are engineered for the unique demands of hot, agitated, heavily used spa water, and they're built to work together as a system. That coordination delivers more reliable, repeatable results than mixing unrelated single products.

What is ALEX water testing?

ALEX is SpaGuard's exclusive computerized water-analysis tool used by its dealers. A quick water sample produces a precise read on your spa's chemistry and a tailored recommendation, taking the guesswork out of what to add and when.

Why buy SpaGuard from an authorized dealer?

SpaGuard dealers are trained on the brand's products and water-care technology, so you get expert advice alongside genuine product. They can run an ALEX analysis, troubleshoot issues, and recommend exactly what your water needs.

About SpaGuard®

SpaGuard is a professional-grade line of spa and hot tub water care products engineered specifically for spas — not pool chemicals repackaged for a smaller tub. Built around a simple, proven approach (balance the water, sanitize it, shock it, and keep it clear), SpaGuard products are formulated to work together as a system across three care methods: chlorine, bromine, and the Soft Soak TRIO system.

Because the formulas are made for the unique demands of hot, agitated, heavily used spa water, owners get reliable, repeatable results with less guesswork. SpaGuard is also backed by a trained dealer network and ALEX water-analysis tools, so when a water issue does come up, there's an expert-tested path to fixing it. It's a trusted choice for anyone who wants clean, comfortable, sparkling water with a maintenance routine they can actually keep up with.
