Description

SpaGuard pH Decreaser is a granular product that lowers high pH and total alkalinity in spa and hot tub water. When your pH climbs too high, the water turns basic — and that creates its own set of problems: the water gets cloudy, scale starts forming on surfaces and equipment, and your sanitizer becomes noticeably less effective at the very job you're counting on it for.

pH is one of the most important and most active numbers in spa care. It drifts constantly as bathers come and go, as you add other chemicals, and as the water heats and aerates — and it tends to climb over time. When it rises out of range, pH Decreaser brings it back down to the comfortable target, along with total alkalinity. Getting both back in range protects your spa and equipment from scale, clears up high-pH cloudiness, restores sanitizer performance, and makes the water comfortable again.

Made from sodium bisulfate, it's the standard, reliable way to correct high pH. It dissolves into the water with the pump running and works with every common sanitizing system.

Pro Tip: High pH quietly wastes your sanitizer. At a pH of 8.0, a large share of your chlorine is chemically inactive — meaning you're adding sanitizer that can't fully work. Bringing pH back down to 7.4–7.6 with pH Decreaser is often the cheapest way to make the chlorine you already use more effective.

What's in the Box
  • 1 x SpaGuard pH Decreaser — 22 oz. (resealable bottle, granular)

Note: pH Decreaser lowers pH and total alkalinity. If you need to raise pH instead, that's the companion product, SpaGuard pH Increaser. Keep the bottle tightly sealed and store it in a cool, dry place away from other chemicals — never mix it with other chemicals in concentrated form.

Key Features
  • Lowers pH and total alkalinity — corrects basic, high-pH water and brings both numbers back into range.
  • Protects spa and equipment — prevents the scale buildup on surfaces, heaters, and fittings that high pH causes.
  • Prevents cloudy water — clears the cloudiness that develops when pH runs high.
  • Restores sanitizer effectiveness — chlorine and bromine work far better with pH in the correct range.
  • Improves bather comfort — balanced water is gentle on eyes and skin.
  • Works with every common sanitizing system — chlorine, bromine, ozone, and biguanide.
How It Works

pH measures how acidic or basic your water is, with the spa target sitting right around 7.4–7.6. When pH rises above that range, the water becomes basic — minerals fall out of solution and form scale, the water clouds, and a growing share of your chlorine converts to a form that can't sanitize effectively. Total alkalinity, the buffer underneath pH, often rises along with it and needs to come down too.

SpaGuard pH Decreaser is sodium bisulfate, a dry acid. Broadcast into circulating water, it dissolves and releases acidity that neutralizes the excess, lowering both pH and total alkalinity back toward target. Because it's added gradually and retested, you can dial the water in precisely rather than overshooting into low, corrosive pH — keeping the correction controlled and your water balanced.

Pro Tip: Add pH Decreaser in stages, circulating and retesting between doses. Overshooting into low pH means the water turns acidic and corrosive — which then needs pH Increaser to fix, leaving you chasing your numbers in both directions. Sneaking up on the target is faster in the long run.

Directions for Use
  1. If pH rises above 7.6, apply the product per ALEX Pro recommendations (or your water-test guidance) for the correct dose.
  2. Apply by broadcasting the product evenly across the spa with the pump running.
  3. Circulate for 30 minutes and retest pH. Repeat as needed to reach the target range.

Pro Tip: Aim for a pH of 7.4–7.6 and total alkalinity of 80–120 ppm. A SpaGuard dealer water test (using ALEX) takes the guesswork out of exactly how much to add for your spa's volume and current readings.

  • Chlorine spas — fully compatible.
  • Bromine spas — fully compatible.
  • Ozone systems — compatible as part of a balanced-water routine.
  • Biguanide systems — compatible.
  • All spa surfaces — safe for use with all common spa surfaces.

Important: pH Decreaser is a balancer, not a sanitizer. It corrects water chemistry but doesn't sanitize — use it alongside your regular sanitizer and shock.

SpaGuard® Brand FAQs

What is SpaGuard?

SpaGuard is a professional-grade brand of spa and hot tub water care products — sanitizers, shocks, balancers, and water enhancers — formulated specifically for spas rather than adapted from pool chemicals. The line is designed to work together as a complete system for clean, clear, comfortable water.

Who makes SpaGuard?

SpaGuard is part of the BioGuard family of water care brands, a long-established name in pool and spa chemistry. That backing means the formulas are professionally developed and tested, with a reputation built over decades in the industry.

What water care systems does SpaGuard offer?

SpaGuard supports three complete care methods: a chlorine system, a bromine system, and the Soft Soak TRIO system. Each is a coordinated set of products, so you can match your routine to the sanitizer you prefer.

What makes SpaGuard different from generic spa chemicals?

SpaGuard products are engineered for the unique demands of hot, agitated, heavily used spa water, and they're built to work together as a system. That coordination delivers more reliable, repeatable results than mixing unrelated single products.

What is ALEX water testing?

ALEX is SpaGuard's exclusive computerized water-analysis tool used by its dealers. A quick water sample produces a precise read on your spa's chemistry and a tailored recommendation, taking the guesswork out of what to add and when.

Why buy SpaGuard from an authorized dealer?

SpaGuard dealers are trained on the brand's products and water-care technology, so you get expert advice alongside genuine product. They can run an ALEX analysis, troubleshoot issues, and recommend exactly what your water needs.

About SpaGuard®

SpaGuard is a professional-grade line of spa and hot tub water care products engineered specifically for spas — not pool chemicals repackaged for a smaller tub. Built around a simple, proven approach (balance the water, sanitize it, shock it, and keep it clear), SpaGuard products are formulated to work together as a system across three care methods: chlorine, bromine, and the Soft Soak TRIO system.

Because the formulas are made for the unique demands of hot, agitated, heavily used spa water, owners get reliable, repeatable results with less guesswork. SpaGuard is also backed by a trained dealer network and ALEX water-analysis tools, so when a water issue does come up, there's an expert-tested path to fixing it. It's a trusted choice for anyone who wants clean, comfortable, sparkling water with a maintenance routine they can actually keep up with.
