Description

SpaPure Multi Shock Extra is a powerful, chlorine-based multi-function shock for hot tubs and spas. Built on dichlor (sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione), it does several jobs in one fast-dissolving granular product: it kills algae, oxidizes organic waste, restores water clarity, and provides long-lasting chlorine protection — and it can even serve as a primary chlorine sanitizer on its own.

Every soak leaves behind sweat, oils, lotions, and other organic waste that clouds water, feeds algae, and consumes your sanitizer. A chlorine shock blasts through that load with a strong dose of free available chlorine — sanitizing, oxidizing, and clearing the water in a single step. Because it's chlorine-based, it both kills and oxidizes, where a non-chlorine oxidizer only cleans up waste without sanitizing.

It works fast, too: once the chlorine settles into the safe range, the spa can be used in as little as 15 minutes. The result is cleaner, clearer, better-balanced water with a fresh feel.

Pro Tip: Chlorine shock vs. non-chlorine shock — know which you're reaching for. Multi Shock Extra is chlorine-based, so it both sanitizes and oxidizes, and it raises your chlorine level. If you'd rather clear bather waste without adding chlorine (or without waiting for chlorine to drop before soaking), reach for the non-chlorine Oxidizing Shock instead. Many owners keep both and choose based on the situation.

What's in the Box
  • 1 x SpaPure Multi Shock Extra (2 lb resealable container, granular)
Key Features
  • Multi-function chlorine shock — sanitizes, shocks, and oxidizes in one product
  • Kills algae — chlorine-based disinfecting action clears and prevents algae
  • Oxidizes organic waste — burns off the oils and contaminants that cloud water
  • Doubles as a primary sanitizer — can establish and maintain a chlorine residual on its own
  • Adds sparkle — brings clarity to dull water and a fresh, soft feel
  • Fast turnaround — spa can be used in as little as 15 minutes once chlorine is in range
How It Works

When you broadcast the granules into circulating water, the dichlor dissolves and releases a strong dose of free available chlorine. That chlorine simultaneously destroys bacteria and algae and oxidizes the organic waste bathers leave behind, converting it into byproducts that filter out or gas off. The "extra" strength means it can both reset the water as a shock and hold a residual as a sanitizer.

Dichlor is a stabilized chlorine — it contains cyanuric acid that protects the chlorine from burning off too quickly, which is good day to day but means the cyanuric acid slowly accumulates over time. The target for routine use is a free chlorine residual of 1–3 ppm, and reentry is prohibited above 3 ppm.

Pro Tip: Always broadcast it over the water with the pump running, and brush any granules that settle to the bottom. Concentrated chlorine granules left sitting on an acrylic or vinyl surface can bleach or damage a spot — so spread them across moving water, and if any sink, use a spa brush to disperse them before they sit.

Directions for Use

Never mix different products together in the same bottle or pail. Always add with the pump and filter running to ensure complete mixing, broadcasting the product uniformly over the surface of the water. Always apply when the spa is not in use. Adjust pH to between 7.2 and 7.6 first.

As a Primary Sanitizer

  1. Add 4 teaspoons (1/2 ounce) per 500 gallons to establish a free chlorine residual of 1–3 ppm.
  2. Circulate 5 to 10 minutes for complete mixing, then test for free chlorine.
  3. Once the residual is 1–3 ppm, the spa may be entered. Reentry is prohibited above 3 ppm chlorine. Do not let the residual drop below 1 ppm.

As a Weekly Shock

  1. Add about 2 ounces per 500 gallons with the pump and filter running.
  2. Brush any undissolved granules off the bottom; never let undissolved product rest on spa surfaces.
  3. Test chlorine before reentry — do not reenter until the residual is between 1 and 3 ppm.

Pro Tip: Test before you get in — every time. Because this product can push chlorine well above the safe soaking level, never reenter the spa until a test strip confirms 3 ppm or lower. A 30-second test is all it takes to avoid a too-strong, irritating soak.

Compatibility

SpaPure Multi Shock Extra is designed for spas run on a chlorine program — it's a chlorine product, so it's not intended for bromine routines. It can act as your primary chlorine sanitizer or as a weekly shock alongside SpaPure Chlorinating Granules.

It works as a system with your pH and alkalinity balancers (always balance the water to pH 7.2–7.6 before shocking) and SpaPure test strips to confirm your free chlorine sits in the 1–3 ppm range before reentry. One timing note: if you use an enzyme product like SpaPure EZ-Enzyme, hold off adding it until the chlorine level drops back below about 6 ppm after a heavy shock. Never mix this product with other chemicals in the same container.

SpaPure® Brand FAQs

What is SpaPure, and who makes it?

SpaPure is a line of spa and hot tub water care products from Haviland Pool & Spa, a 100% employee-owned American manufacturer with more than 55 years of pool and spa experience. Haviland's Pool & Spa division began in 1968 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and all SpaPure products are made in the USA.

Is SpaPure formulated specifically for spas, or is it pool chemicals in smaller bottles?

SpaPure is engineered specifically for spas and hot tubs. Spa water is a different challenge from pool water — far less volume, a much higher bather load per gallon, and hotter temperatures that accelerate everything. SpaPure's formulas are concentrated and dosed for that environment rather than scaled-down pool products.

Can I use SpaPure products with my chlorine, bromine, or salt water system?

Yes. SpaPure makes products for chlorine, bromine, and salt/mineral programs, plus balancers, shocks, clarifiers, and specialty treatments that work alongside any of them. Match the sanitizer-specific products to your system, and use the balancers and oxidizers regardless of which sanitizer you run. If you're not sure what fits your setup, a quick water test will point you to the right products.

Why buy SpaPure from an authorized dealer like Leisure Time Inc.?

Buying from an authorized dealer means you get fresh, correctly stored product — spa chemicals degrade with age and poor storage — backed by people who can actually help you use it. Leisure Time Inc. has carried spa water care for decades, and our team can match products to your specific spa and water chemistry. Chemicals sold far below market price on third-party marketplaces are often expired, mishandled, or gray-market, with no support behind them.

Why do some SpaPure products ship ground only and can't be returned by mail?

Certain spa chemicals — chlorine and bromine products, oxidizers, and some acids — are classified as hazardous materials by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Federal regulations require them to ship by ground rather than air and prohibit consumers from mailing them back. Products with this restriction are noted on the product page. If you have unopened chemicals you no longer need, you can return them in person at one of our showrooms or contact us about your options.

How do I know which SpaPure products my spa needs?

Start with a water test. Testing tells you what your water actually needs instead of guessing — which sanitizer level to adjust, whether to balance pH or alkalinity, and when to shock. You can test at home with SpaPure test strips, or bring a water sample to any Leisure Time showroom for free in-store testing and a product recommendation. You can also call us and we'll walk you through it.

About SpaPure®

SpaPure is a spa-specific water care brand made by Haviland Pool & Spa, a 100% employee-owned American company with more than 55 years in pool and spa chemistry. Haviland's Pool & Spa division began in 1968 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as one of the early pioneers of modern pool and spa treatments, and today produces over 100 products across eight in-house brands. Because Haviland is employee-owned through an ESOP, the people who make and stand behind SpaPure have a direct stake in whether your water turns out right.

SpaPure is built specifically for spas and hot tubs — concentrated, fast-acting formulas designed for the small water volumes and high bather loads that make spa water harder to keep balanced than pool water. The line covers the full routine: sanitizing, shock and oxidation, water balance, clarifiers and enzymes, stain and scale control, and salt-system support — all proudly made in the USA.
