Description

Leisure Time pH Balance Plus is a granular pH buffer and stabilizer formulated for spas and hot tubs — and it does something fundamentally different from a pH increaser or decreaser. Rather than pushing pH up or down, pH Balance Plus locks pH in place, all but eliminating the frustrating "pH bounce" that has owners chasing the same reading up and down week after week. It's formulated specifically to resist pH changes even when the spa is refilled with hard water, the conditions under which pH is hardest to hold steady.

Every spa owner who's battled pH knows the cycle: add pH Up, it climbs too high, add pH Down, it crashes too low, repeat endlessly. That instability isn't a dosing problem — it's a buffering problem. Water with poor buffering capacity has nothing to hold pH steady, so it swings wildly in response to every sanitizer dose, every soak, and every bit of aeration from the jets. Hard water and high-use spas are especially prone to it. No amount of pH Up or pH Down fixes the underlying instability; those products just move the reading temporarily before it drifts again.

pH Balance Plus solves the root cause. Added once at fresh fill, it establishes a strong buffer that holds pH stable in the proper range from refill to refill — typically the full 3–4 month fill cycle. A single 3 lb bottle treats up to 500 gallons and lasts the entire cycle, replacing the constant weekly tug-of-war with a one-time startup step. For anyone tired of chasing pH, this is the product that ends the chase.

Pro Tip: Understand what pH Balance Plus is and isn't. It's a buffer that holds pH steady — not a corrector that moves a badly out-of-range reading. Before adding it, get your pH into the acceptable 7.0–8.0 window first using Spa Up or Spa Down if needed. Then add pH Balance Plus to lock that good reading in place for the rest of the fill cycle. Think of Spa Up and Spa Down as the steering wheel that gets you into your lane, and pH Balance Plus as the lane-keep assist that keeps you there.

How It Works

pH stability comes down to buffering capacity — the water's ability to resist changes in pH when acids or bases are introduced. A well-buffered solution absorbs those inputs and holds its pH steady; a poorly buffered one swings dramatically with every small change. In a spa, the constant inputs are relentless: acidic sanitizer byproducts, CO₂ stripping from jet aeration, bather waste, and fill water chemistry all push pH around continuously. Without adequate buffering, the result is the familiar bounce — pH that never settles no matter how carefully you dose pH Up and pH Down.

pH Balance Plus works by establishing a strong, durable buffer system in the water. Once dissolved, it creates a chemical reservoir that absorbs the acidic and alkaline inputs the spa generates, neutralizing their effect on pH before they can move the reading. Instead of pH swinging in response to every dose and every soak, the buffer holds it within a narrow band — the proper 7.2–7.8 range — and keeps it there.

The formulation is specifically engineered to perform in hard water, which is where pH is hardest to control. Hard fill water tends to start at high pH and resists conventional buffering, which is why ordinary alkalinity adjustments often fail to hold pH steady in hard-water regions. pH Balance Plus is built to establish stable buffering even under those conditions. Because the buffer is established once and depletes slowly, a single application lasts from one refill to the next — making this a fresh-fill startup product rather than a weekly maintenance item. Temporary cloudiness immediately after dosing is normal and clears quickly as the granular fully dissolves.

Pro Tip: If you've been fighting pH bounce for months and nothing holds, the issue is almost certainly buffering — and pH Balance Plus at your next fresh fill will likely feel like a revelation. But timing matters: this is afresh-fill product. Don't dump it into mid-cycle water that's already chemically loaded and possibly nearing its drain date. Wait for your next drain-and-refill, establish the buffer in clean water, and you'll get the full refill-to-refill stability the product is designed to deliver.

Directions for Use

Fresh Fill / Start-Up (Primary Use)

  1. Fill the spa with fresh water and turn on the filtration system.
  2. Using Leisure Time Test Strips, test your spa water. Confirm pH is between 7.0 and 8.0. If it's outside that window, adjust first with Spa Up or Spa Down before proceeding.
  3. Add pH Balance Plus directly to the spa water:Up to 250 gallons: 1½ lbs (half the bottle)Up to 500 gallons: 3 lbs (the entire bottle)
  4. Turn jets on and allow the water to circulate for 15 minutes.
  5. Temporary cloudiness may occur — this is normal and clears quickly once the product is fully dissolved.
  6. Repeat the application each time you refill the spa with fresh water.

Ongoing

pH Balance Plus is a one-shot, fresh-fill product — it does not require weekly re-dosing. Once the buffer is established, it holds pH stable for the full fill cycle. Continue testing pH twice weekly with Test Strips; if you ever see pH drift outside range despite the buffer (rare, but possible after heavy chemical events), correct with Spa Up or Spa Down as needed.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in original container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use — granular pH chemicals absorb moisture and clump if left open
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not mix with other chemicals in the bottle, scoop, or any dry container — always add directly to spa water

Pro Tip: pH Balance Plus changes your whole water-care routine for the better, but it can mask a subtle issue: because pH stays so stable, it's easy to stop testing altogether. Don't. Sanitizer level, calcium hardness, and overall water age still need monitoring even when pH is locked in. Keep your twice-weekly Test Strip habit — you'll just find that the pH reading is reassuringly boring week after week, which is exactly the point.

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
