Description

Leisure Time Spa Minerals is an EPA-registered mineral purifier cartridge that delivers silver-ion sanitation to your spa water — and reduces your chlorine or bromine use by up to 50%. The cartridge releases a continuous, low-level stream of silver ions that destroy bacteria on contact, sharing the sanitation workload with your existing sanitizer program so you can dose dramatically less of it. One cartridge lasts up to 4 months in spas up to 600 gallons, fits inside or alongside your existing filter, and requires zero ongoing dosing or monitoring once installed. It's also a direct functional substitute for the FreshWater Silver Ion Cartridge — same chemistry, same fit, same purpose.

Mineral sanitation is the answer for owners who find traditional chlorine or bromine programs harsh. The silver ions in Spa Minerals are continuously released at low levels into the water, where they actively kill bacteria the same way silver has been used to purify water for centuries — long before modern sanitizers existed. Because the silver does part of the bacterial-control work, your chlorine or bromine residual doesn't have to work alone, which means you can run your sanitizer at the low end of its target range instead of the high end. The result is softer-feeling water, less chemical smell, gentler conditions on skin and eyes, and noticeably reduced sanitizer demand week over week.

This is a passive, set-and-forget product. Install the cartridge inside your filter (or in the filter well or skimmer tray depending on your spa model), and it works for up to 4 months without measuring, dosing, or testing. Replace at every drain-and-refill — typically the same cadence the rest of your spa maintenance follows. For owners chasing simpler water care and less chemical use, mineral cartridges are one of the highest-return upgrades available.

Pro Tip: Spa Minerals reduces sanitizer demand — it doesn't eliminate it. You still need to maintain a chlorine residual of at least 1.0 ppm (or bromine residual of 1–2 ppm) at all times when using a mineral cartridge. Silver kills bacteria slower than free chlorine, so the small residual sanitizer serves as the immediate-response defense while the silver works in the background. Owners who try to run mineral systems with zero sanitizer end up with cloudy water and biofilm problems. Reduced sanitizer, yes; eliminated sanitizer, no.

How It Works

Silver has been used to purify drinking water and treat infections for thousands of years — the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans stored water in silver vessels because they observed it stayed fresh longer. The science behind that observation is now well understood: silver ions disrupt bacterial cell membranes, interfere with cellular respiration, and bind to bacterial DNA, killing microorganisms on contact at extremely low concentrations. Modern silver-ion technology applies the same principle in a controlled, EPA-registered form designed for recreational water.

The Leisure Time Spa Minerals cartridge contains 0.5% silver chloride bound into a slow-release matrix. As water flows through or around the cartridge during normal filter operation, trace amounts of silver are released into the water at a steady rate. The dissolved silver ions disperse throughout the spa, continuously providing low-level bacterial control everywhere the water reaches — including the corners, jets, and plumbing where chlorine and bromine residual sometimes thin out.

The reason this lets you cut sanitizer use in half is simple division of labor. In a sanitizer-only system, your chlorine or bromine has to handle 100% of the bacterial control workload, which is why you maintain higher residual levels (2–4 ppm). In a mineral-supplemented system, silver handles a meaningful share of the workload, so your sanitizer can hold residual at the low end of safe range (1–2 ppm) and still keep water reliably safe. Lower sanitizer concentrations mean less chemical smell, less skin and eye irritation, less impact on swimsuits, and less weekly chemical cost. The cartridge runs continuously and silently in the background, with no input from you, until it's time to replace it at the next drain-and-refill.

Pro Tip: The 4-month replacement cadence is important — and not because the cartridge "expires." It's because silver release rate gradually declines as the silver chloride matrix is consumed. A cartridge that's been in service for 5–6 months is still releasing some silver, but at a lower rate that's no longer enough to materially reduce sanitizer demand. Mark your calendar at install and swap the cartridge with every drain-and-refill — running it too long means you're back to relying on sanitizer alone without realizing it.

Directions for Use

Pre-Installation Setup

  1. Ensure all spa equipment is working properly.
  2. Operate the pump and filter for at least 3 hours per day.
  3. Clean the filter following the manufacturer's directions.
  4. Adjust pH to between 7.2 and 7.8.
  5. With a freshly filled spa, establish a chlorine residual of 1.0–2.0 ppm (or bromine 1–2 ppm) using an EPA-approved spa shock or sanitizer.

Installation

Spa Minerals fits in one of three locations depending on your spa configuration:

  • Most spas (2.5 HP pumps or smaller, with skimmer): Insert the cartridge inside the filter cartridge core. Do not allow the product to sit too low in the filter — if it blocks water flow, move it to the filter well instead. If installed inside a standpipe, attach a string to the handle for easy removal.
  • High-flow spas (2.5 HP pumps or larger, with skimmer): Place the cartridge in the filter well outside of the filter cartridge.
  • Small cartridge filter spas or other configurations: Place the cartridge in the skimmer tray.

If your filter cartridge is shorter than the Spa Minerals stick, trim the bottom portion of the cartridge to fit. Always orient the stick so water flow passes through or around it during normal filter operation.

Ongoing Maintenance

  1. Maintain chlorine residual of at least 1.0 ppm (or bromine residual of 1.0 ppm) at all times. Test 2–3 times per week with Leisure Time Test Strips.
  2. Shock the spa once a week or as needed with Renew, Replenish, or your usual shock product.
  3. Keep the spa free of leaves and debris.
  4. When using other products, follow the directions on those products as well.
  5. Replace the cartridge after 4 months or at each drain-and-refill, whichever comes first.

Storage & Handling

  • Store unopened cartridges in original packaging in a cool, dry location, away from direct sunlight
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Once installed in the spa, the cartridge requires no special storage handling
  • Dispose of used cartridges per local guidelines

Pro Tip: If you're switching from a sanitizer-only program to a mineral-supplemented program, don't drop your sanitizer dose in half the first week — let the silver ions build up to working concentration over 3–5 days first. Start by maintaining your normal sanitizer residual, then gradually reduce the sanitizer dose over the following two weeks while watching test strip readings. Most owners settle in around 50% of their previous sanitizer use, but exact reduction varies by bather load and water temperature. Let your test strips guide the cut, not the marketing promise.

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
