Description

Leisure Time Instant Cartridge Clean is a spray-on, rinse-off filter cleaner formulated for spa and hot tub cartridge filters. Active chemistry: a fast-acting blend of surfactants and mild chelating agents engineered to dissolve body oils, lotion residue, grease, and calcium scale from filter media in 5 minutes — without the overnight soaking required by deep-clean products. The 1-pint bottle ships with an integrated spray nozzle and includes a blue color indicator that shows exactly where the product has been applied, so you don't miss any pleats.

Filter cartridges need three different levels of care to perform their best. Weekly garden-hose rinses clear surface debris like leaves and hair. Quarterly overnight soaks with Filter Clean handle deep buildup at drain-and-refill cycles. The gap between those two — the routine monthly maintenance that keeps a filter performing at peak between deep cleans — is exactly what Instant Cartridge Clean is built for. Five minutes once a month restores flow, extends cartridge life, and prevents the slow filter clog that contributes to cloudy water and rising sanitizer demand.

For owners who run their spa weekly or more, monthly Instant Cartridge Clean is one of the highest-return maintenance investments in the entire Leisure Time lineup. A clean filter does more for water clarity than nearly any chemical product, runs the pump less hard (which extends pump life), and gives sanitizer the clean media surface it needs to actually trap the particles it's supposed to remove.

Pro Tip: The complete filter care cadence: rinse weekly with a garden hose to clear surface debris, spray-clean monthly with Instant Cartridge Clean to dissolve oils and surface scale, and deep-soak quarterly with Filter Clean at every drain-and-refill. Owners who follow this routine get 2–3 years out of cartridges that owners who only rinse get 6–8 months out of. Skipping the monthly spray-clean is the biggest filter-life mistake in residential spa care.

How It Works

Filter cartridges accumulate two distinct kinds of buildup between deep cleans. The first is surface contamination — body oils, lotion residue, sunscreen, and sweat that coats the outside of the pleat fabric and accumulates in the outer layers of the filter media. The second is deep contamination — particles and oils that have worked their way down into the inner pleat structure, where surface rinsing can't reach. Surface contamination develops quickly (within weeks of use) and is what Instant Cartridge Clean is built to address. Deep contamination develops more slowly and requires the soak-based action of Filter Clean.

The spray formula combines two active categories. Surfactants reduce surface tension and emulsify oils, breaking the bond between hydrophobic contaminants and the filter fabric so they can release. Mild chelating agents dissolve calcium scale by binding to mineral ions on filter fibers and pulling them off. Five minutes of contact time with this combined chemistry is enough to dissolve the surface layer of buildup that develops between deep cleans.

The blue color indicator is more useful than it sounds. Pleated filter cartridges have dozens of folds, and missing a few pleats during application is the easy mistake to make. The visible blue spray shows exactly which pleats have been covered and which haven't, ensuring even treatment across the full filter surface — which matters because untreated pleats clog faster than treated ones and become the new bottleneck for water flow.

Pro Tip: The thorough rinse step at the end isn't optional — it's the single most-skipped instruction on this product. Surfactants left on filter media will produce visible foam in the spa when water starts running through them. Spend a full 60 seconds with the high-pressure hose nozzle on each filter cartridge, working both with and against the pleat direction. If you see any blue tint remaining in the rinse water, keep rinsing. Foam from incomplete rinsing won't damage anything, but it's annoying enough to make customers think the product doesn't work.

Directions for Use

Monthly Cleaning Procedure

  1. Remove the cartridge filter from the filter housing in the spa.
  2. Rinse the cartridge thoroughly with a garden hose to remove loose surface debris — leaves, hair, large particles. This pre-rinse step is essential; embedded debris reduces the effectiveness of the spray cleaner.
  3. Saturate the filter element with water — a wet filter accepts the cleaner more evenly than a dry one.
  4. Spray Instant Cartridge Clean over the entire surface of the filter, working into every pleat. The blue color indicator shows where the product has been applied — keep spraying until every pleat shows blue coverage.
  5. Let the cleaner sit on the filter for 5 minutes (3–6 minutes for normal use; longer for heavily soiled filters).
  6. Rinse the filter completely with a high-pressure hose nozzle. Work from the top down and from the inside out, going both with and against the pleat direction. Continue rinsing until water runs completely clear with no remaining blue tint.
  7. If possible, allow the filter to air-dry before reinstalling. A 24-hour dry period is ideal but not required.
  8. Reinstall the cartridge in the filter housing and resume normal spa use.

Heavily Soiled Filters

  1. For filters that look or feel heavily clogged, repeat steps 1–6 with a second spray-and-rinse cycle.
  2. If a second cycle doesn't restore visible cleanliness, the filter is overdue for an overnight deep soak with Leisure Time Filter Clean rather than a monthly spray treatment.

If Foaming Occurs After Reinstall

Visible foam in the spa after returning a freshly cleaned cartridge means the rinse step was incomplete and surfactant residue is still on the filter media. Two options:

  • Remove the filter and rinse it again until water runs clear, then reinstall.
  • Use a small dose of Leisure Time Foam Down to collapse the immediate foam, then plan a more thorough rinse on the next cleaning cycle.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in original container in a cool, dry location, away from direct sunlight
  • Keep spray nozzle tightly closed when not in use
  • Protect from freezing — liquid formula can lose effectiveness if frozen
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not spray near eyes; if contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water

Pro Tip: If your spa has two filter cartridges (most do — it's the standard factory setup), use Instant Cartridge Clean as part of a rotation system. Run one cartridge for a month, swap it out for the second cartridge, then spray-clean and air-dry the first one while the second is in service. This rotation gives each cartridge a 24-hour fully dry recovery period every month — which extends polyester fiber life significantly and keeps the spa filtering at peak performance constantly.

  • Filter types: pleated cartridge filters (the standard residential spa filter type) — polyester, polypropylene, and Reemay-style pleated media
  • Sanitizer systems: chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridges (silver/copper), biguanide (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak) — the cleaner is rinsed off completely before the filter returns to service, so it doesn't interact with water chemistry

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
