Description

Leisure Time Cover Care & Conditioner is a liquid vinyl cleaner, protectant, and UV inhibitor formulated for spa and hot tub covers — and for any other marine-grade vinyl surface that lives outdoors. The formula cleans surface grime, restores luster to faded or weathered vinyl, repels water and dust, and most importantly, lays down a UV-blocking barrier that protects the underlying vinyl from the single biggest threat to its lifespan: sunlight.

A spa cover is the most expensive part of your spa that no one maintains. A quality replacement runs $400 to $800 or more. Properly cared for, a spa cover lasts 5 to 7 years — sometimes longer. Neglected and exposed to direct sun, the same cover lasts 2 to 3 years before the vinyl cracks, the foam absorbs water, and the whole assembly becomes a waterlogged, heavy mess that's no longer providing meaningful insulation. Most cover failures are not weather damage — they're sun damage. UV radiation breaks down the plasticizers that keep vinyl flexible, causing the material to dry out, crack, and lose its weather seal.

Cover Care & Conditioner stops that cycle. Applied monthly to a clean dry cover, the product cleans accumulated dust and pollen, restores the natural sheen of healthy vinyl, and lays down a UV-blocking conditioning film that prevents further sun damage. A single 16 oz bottle treats a standard spa cover roughly 12 to 16 times — about a year and a half of monthly maintenance, or several years of seasonal maintenance. The math on cover protection is simple: a single bottle of cover conditioner used regularly can easily save a $600 cover replacement.

Pro Tip: The most common mistake with vinyl protectants is applying them to a dirty cover. Dust and pollen embedded under the protectant film create permanent staining and trap abrasive particles against the vinyl. Always clean the cover thoroughly with mild soap and water (or a dedicated vinyl cleaner), let it dry completely, then apply Cover Care. Five extra minutes of prep doubles the lifespan of the treatment and prevents the streaking that comes from skipping the clean step.

How It Works

Spa cover vinyl is technically called "marine-grade vinyl" — a flexible PVC formulation reinforced with plasticizers, UV inhibitors, and antimicrobial agents during manufacturing. The vinyl starts its life with built-in protection against the four threats it'll face outdoors: sun, water, mildew, and physical abrasion. The problem is that those built-in protections aren't permanent. UV inhibitors break down over time, plasticizers leach out, and the vinyl gradually loses the protective additives that kept it flexible and weather-resistant.

Sun damage is the dominant failure mode. Direct UV radiation breaks the molecular bonds in PVC and accelerates plasticizer loss, causing vinyl to first lose its luster, then become hard and brittle, then crack at fold lines (the natural stress points), and finally split open enough to let water reach the foam core inside. Once foam gets wet, the cover gains weight rapidly, loses insulation value, and starts the downhill slide toward replacement.

Cover Care & Conditioner counteracts that aging process in two ways. First, the cleaning surfactants in the formula remove the dust, pollen, and surface oxidation that have accumulated on the vinyl — restoring the cover to a clean, healthy surface state. Second, the conditioning compounds penetrate into the vinyl matrix and re-introduce plasticizers and UV-blocking agents, replacing what's been lost to weathering and lifting visible fading. The resulting protective film on the surface repels water, dust, and dirt, while the UV inhibitors absorb sunlight that would otherwise be attacking the vinyl underneath.

The water-repellency benefit builds with repeated applications. The first treatment lays down a base film; subsequent treatments add additional protection layers, and after 3–4 monthly applications, water beads off the cover surface like rain off a freshly waxed car. That bead-off effect is also a useful diagnostic — when water stops beading and starts soaking in, it's time for another application.

Pro Tip: Cover Care isn't just for new covers. If your spa cover is already showing fade, surface chalking, or loss of sheen, the conditioning ingredients can partially restore appearance and significantly slow further degradation — even on a 3+ year old cover. The earlier you start, the better the results, but it's almost never too late to begin a maintenance routine. The exceptions are covers with cracked vinyl or visible foam exposure; once vinyl is structurally compromised, conditioner can't reverse it.

Directions for Use

Initial Application (New or Untreated Cover)

  1. Clean the spa cover thoroughly with mild dish soap and water — or a dedicated vinyl cleaner — to remove all dust, pollen, dirt, and oxidation.
  2. Rinse the cover completely with a hose.
  3. Allow the cover to dry fully in the air. Surface moisture interferes with protectant absorption.
  4. Shake the bottle of Cover Care & Conditioner gently before use.
  5. Apply liberally to the dry cover surface using a clean microfiber cloth or soft applicator pad.
  6. Let the product stand on the surface for 10–15 minutes to allow penetration.
  7. Wipe excess product off with a clean dry microfiber cloth and buff to a high luster.
  8. Apply a second coat after 24 hours for initial treatment. The first coat establishes the protective base layer; the second coat dramatically increases water repellency.

Ongoing Maintenance Application

  1. Apply Cover Care monthly during spring, summer, and fall — and every 2 months in winter (or after any extended period of rain or snow exposure).
  2. Always clean the cover first, even if it looks clean. Embedded dust under fresh protectant causes streaking and uneven protection.
  3. Reduce application frequency once a baseline of 3–4 coats has been built up — at that point, water repellency is at maximum and quarterly treatments maintain it.
  4. Re-apply immediately after any pressure-washing of the cover, which strips off existing protectant.

Other Vinyl Surfaces

Same procedure applies to car interiors, boat upholstery, and patio furniture — clean first, apply liberally, let stand 10–15 minutes, wipe off excess. For interior automotive use, apply sparingly to avoid slick steering wheels or seats.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in original container in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use
  • Protect from freezing — liquid formula can separate or lose effectiveness if frozen
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Wipe up spills on hardscape surfaces immediately — the product is slippery on concrete and patio stone

Pro Tip: Cover Care monthly is good. Cover Care monthly plus flipping the cover every few weeks is dramatically better. Spa covers wear unevenly — the side facing the sun degrades far faster than the side facing the spa. If your cover is symmetrical (no specific top/bottom orientation), rotate it 180 degrees every 3–4 weeks during sunny months so the same side isn't always taking the UV hit. Combined with Cover Care, this practice can add years to total cover lifespan.

Leisure Time® Brand FAQs

Can I use Leisure Time products in any brand of hot tub?

Yes. Leisure Time spa chemicals are formulated to work safely in every major brand of residential hot tub, including Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and others. They're also compatible with every common spa shell material — acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass, rotomolded plastic, and stainless steel.

Will Leisure Time chemicals work with my sanitizer system?

The Leisure Time line is built for universal sanitizer compatibility. Products work with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge systems (silver/copper), biguanide systems (Baqua Spa, SoftSoak), and salt-generated chlorine systems like the FreshWater Salt System. Specific product labels will note any exceptions.

Can I mix Leisure Time with pool chemicals or other spa brands?

We don't recommend it. Spa chemistry is sensitive, and mixing brands can lead to unpredictable interactions — cloudiness, foam, sanitizer interference, or staining. Leisure Time products are tested as a complete system; using them together gives you the most predictable results and the simplest weekly routine.

How long do Leisure Time products last in storage?

Most Leisure Time chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Keep all spa chemicals in their original containers, sealed tightly, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, and other chemicals. Liquid products are most sensitive to temperature; granular products are more shelf-stable but should still be kept dry.

Are Leisure Time products safe for septic systems and drainage?

Yes — when spa water is properly diluted and drained according to local regulations, Leisure Time chemicals at residual levels are safe for typical municipal drainage. For homes on septic systems, drain spa water gradually over your lawn or landscape rather than dumping it all into the septic field at once. Always check local ordinances before draining.

How often do I need to drain and refill my spa when using Leisure Time?

Industry guidance is to drain and refill every 3 to 4 months for a typical 400-gallon residential spa, regardless of which chemical brand you use. Heavy use, lots of bathers, or high-temperature soaking can shorten that interval; light use can extend it. Regular use of Leisure Time clarifiers, filter care, and stain & scale products helps maintain water quality between fills, but no chemical regimen replaces a fresh refill on schedule.

About Leisure Time®

For more than 40 years, Leisure Time® has built spa-specific water care chemistry trusted by hot tub manufacturers, dealers, and homeowners across North America. Where pool chemicals are formulated for tens of thousands of gallons of cool, lightly used water, Leisure Time® products are engineered for the opposite extreme: small water volumes, sustained high temperatures, heavy bather loads, and powerful jet circulation. That combination puts dramatically more stress on water chemistry than a swimming pool ever sees, and it's why generic pool chemicals don't perform reliably in a spa.

The Leisure Time® line covers the complete water care picture — sanitization, water balance, clarity, stain and scale prevention, filter care, and spa surface care — and every product is designed to work together as part of the Simple Spa Care Program. That means no surprise interactions, no guesswork about what's compatible with what, and a predictable weekly routine that takes minutes instead of hours. The full Leisure Time® system works with chlorine, bromine, ozone, mineral cartridge, and biguanide sanitizing programs, and is safe for every common spa shell material.

Leisure Time® is manufactured in the USA and is one of the most widely recommended spa chemical brands in the industry — used by Hot Spring, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Bullfrog, and many other major spa manufacturers as the dealer-recommended water care solution for their tubs.
