Description

FreshWater Filter Cleaner is the granular deep-clean formula for spa filter cartridges — the quarterly or semi-annual treatment that goes beyond a rinse-and-spray maintenance to restore a heavily used filter to near-new condition. Dissolve the granules in water, soak the filter overnight, rinse thoroughly, and reinstall. The result is a filter that's actually clean down to the pleats — not just rinsed clean on the surface.

The 2.7 lb container holds enough granules for multiple deep-clean cycles — typically a year or more of quarterly maintenance for a single-filter spa, or two cleanings for a swim spa with multiple cartridges. Each cleaning consumes only a portion of the container.

Why this product matters when you already have other filter cleaners: spa filters accumulate two different kinds of contamination, and they need two different treatments:

  • Surface contamination — visible debris, oils, and lotion residue on the outer pleats. Handled well by the FreshWater Instant Filter Cleaner (the spray-and-rinse product) on a monthly basis.
  • Deep contamination — minerals, organic buildup, and embedded oils that work their way into the cartridge fiber over time. Surface sprays can't reach this. The only fix is an overnight soak in a deep-cleaning chemistry.

If you've ever had a filter that "feels clean" after spraying but the water still won't clear up, deep contamination is the likely cause. Surface cleaning alone leaves embedded gunk in place; deep soaking dissolves it out. Many "filter is going bad" judgments are actually filters that haven't had a proper deep clean in a year or two — restorable, not replaceable, with the right product.

Pro Tip: Run the Instant Filter Cleaner spray monthly, and the deep-soak granular cleaner (this product) every 3 months — two products with two different jobs. The deep-soak handles what surface sprays can't reach. Owners who use only one or the other typically end up replacing filters two to three times more often than owners who use both.

FreshWater®

What's in the Box
  • 1 × 2.7 lb container of FreshWater Filter Cleaner granules — sealed plastic container with screw cap
  • Use directions and dosing information — printed on the container label

You'll need a separate container (5-gallon bucket works well) to hold the filter and dissolved cleaning solution overnight. Most owners keep a dedicated bucket for this purpose — the same one used for fresh-fill operations.

Key Features
  • Overnight deep-soak formula — penetrates the cartridge fiber where surface sprays can't reach
  • Removes oils, minerals, lotion residue, and embedded organic load — full-spectrum contaminant removal
  • Restores filter efficiency — heavily used cartridges return to near-new flow rate and filtration performance
  • Extends filter cartridge life — properly maintained filters often last 2-3 years; neglected filters may need replacement annually
  • 2.7 lb container — enough granules for multiple cleanings, typically a year or more of quarterly maintenance
  • Concentrated dose per cleaning — only a portion of the container is used per soak; the container goes a long way
  • Universal cartridge filter compatibility — works on filters from Watkins (Hot Spring, Caldera, Freeflow), Pleatco, Unicel, and every other major filter manufacturer
  • Universal sanitizer system compatibility — safe regardless of whether your spa runs chlorine, bromine, salt, biguanide, ozone, or mineral systems
  • Genuine Watkins Wellness — formulated specifically for spa cartridge filtration media
How It Works

Spa cartridge filters work by pleated polyester fibers that capture particulates and contamination as water passes through. Over time, two kinds of buildup happen at the microscopic level:

  • Oil and organic film — body oils, sunscreen, lotion, and personal care products attach to filter fibers as a thin film, eventually filling the spaces between fibers and restricting flow
  • Mineral scale — calcium carbonate and other dissolved minerals precipitate onto filter media in the same way they scale heaters and salt cells, gradually encrusting the cartridge

A standard rinse with a garden hose removes only loose surface debris. A spray-and-rinse product like the Instant Filter Cleaner adds a brief chemical action that dissolves recent surface contamination. But to actually clean a cartridge that's been in service for months, you need time and chemistry working together — an extended soak in a dedicated cleaning solution.

When the granules dissolve in water and the filter is submerged, two chemical processes work simultaneously over the soak period:

  • Surfactant action — breaks down oils and organic films, lifting them off the fiber surface so they release into the soak solution
  • Acidic mineral dissolution — dissolves calcium carbonate scale and other mineral deposits embedded in the cartridge fiber

The overnight soak gives both processes time to work all the way through the cartridge — including the deep pleat folds where contamination accumulates and surface treatments can never reach. The result is a filter that flows like new and traps contaminants efficiently again.

Pro Tip: The visible color of the soak water after an overnight deep clean tells you how dirty the filter actually was. Light tan = lightly soiled; orange-brown = moderate contamination; deep brown or black = heavy contamination that surface cleaning has been missing for months. The dirtier the water, the more your filter needed this cleaning — and the more performance you'll get back.

Directions for Use

When to Deep-Clean Your Filter

  • Every 3 months as preventive maintenance — recommended baseline regardless of visible filter condition
  • At every fresh fill when draining and refilling the spa — clean filter + clean water = best start
  • Anytime water clarity drops despite balanced chemistry — filter contamination is often the hidden cause
  • If the filter pressure differential climbs on spas that monitor flow restriction
  • After heavy use events — multiple bathers, party, kids in sunscreen, etc.
  • When you can see visible discoloration on the pleats that doesn't rinse out with plain water

Deep-Soak Cleaning Procedure

  1. Power off the spa at the breaker before opening the filter compartment.
  2. Remove the filter cartridge(s) from the spa following your owner manual.
  3. Rinse the filter with a garden hose to remove loose surface debris. Spray between the pleats from top to bottom.
  4. Fill a clean bucket with warm water — enough to fully submerge the filter. A 5-gallon bucket works for most residential cartridges.
  5. Add granular cleaner per label directions — typically about 1 cup of granules per 5 gallons of water. Stir to dissolve.
  6. Fully submerge the filter in the cleaning solution. Make sure the pleats are completely covered.
  7. Let soak overnight — minimum 8 hours, up to 24 hours for heavily soiled filters.
  8. Remove the filter from the cleaning solution.
  9. Rinse thoroughly with a high-pressure hose nozzle. Work the spray between every pleat from both directions. This rinse step is critical — residual cleaning chemistry left in the filter will cause foaming when the filter goes back in the spa.
  10. Let the filter dry if time permits (a clean filter dries faster and goes back to the spa cleaner) — but immediate reinstall is fine if needed.
  11. Reinstall the filter in the spa and restore power.
  12. Dispose of the used cleaning solution per local regulations — typically drain-safe when diluted.

The "Two Cartridge Rotation" Approach

Many experienced owners maintain a second filter cartridge for rotation:

  • Clean cartridge in the spa while soiled cartridge is being deep-cleaned
  • Rotate between the two on a monthly or quarterly schedule
  • Each cartridge gets the same usage but with proper drying time between cleanings
  • Both cartridges last meaningfully longer than a single cartridge used continuously

Worth considering if your spa downtime during overnight soaks is inconvenient.

Storage and Safety

  • Keep the container tightly closed between uses — granules can absorb moisture from humid air and clump
  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location away from direct sunlight
  • Store separately from other chemicals — keep away from chlorine, bromine, and other oxidizers
  • Keep away from children and pets
  • Use a clean, dry scoop for measuring — never use the scoop for other products
  • Wear eye protection when adding granules to water; dust can be mildly irritating
  • Do not mix with other chemicals — add only to plain water for filter soaking
  • Shelf life: 2+ years sealed at room temperature

Pro Tip: The rinse step after soaking is the single most important part of the process. Granular filter cleaner left in the cartridge will cause heavy foaming when reinstalled in the spa — a common reason owners blame "bad water" right after a filter cleaning. Rinse with high-pressure water from a hose nozzle, working between every pleat, until the water running off is completely clear and produces no foam when shaken in a clear container. A full rinse can take 10 minutes for a heavily soiled cartridge. It's worth the time.

Compatibility

FreshWater Filter Cleaner is universally compatible with all polyester pleated cartridge filters used in residential spas. The chemistry is formulated for cartridge media specifically and is safe across the full range of filter brands, spa brands, and sanitizer programs.

Filter Cartridge Types

  • All polyester pleated cartridge filters — the standard filter type in virtually every residential spa
  • Watkins-made filters — Hot Spring, Caldera, Freeflow proprietary cartridges
  • Pleatco filters — industry-standard replacement cartridges across many brands
  • Unicel filters — common aftermarket cartridges
  • Hot Spring Tri-X ceramic filters — gentler soak time may be appropriate; check the Tri-X manufacturer guidance
  • OEM and aftermarket cartridges for all major spa brands

Spa Brands

  • All residential hot tubs and spas — Hot Spring, Caldera, Freeflow, Sundance, Bullfrog, Jacuzzi, Marquis, Master Spas, Cal Spas, and every other major brand
  • Swim spas — multiple cartridges per spa; budget enough product for cleaning all of them in sequence
  • Inflatable and portable spas — fold-in cartridge filters benefit from the same treatment
  • Cold plunge tubs

Sanitizer Systems

The cleaning chemistry doesn't interact with sanitizer chemistry in the spa — the filter is removed and cleaned separately, then rinsed and reinstalled.

  • Chlorine, bromine, ozone, biguanide
  • FreshWater Salt System and ACE systems
  • FreshWater Ag+ Silver Ion programs
  • MPS-based programs

Deep-Soak Granular vs. Instant Spray

Two FreshWater filter cleaners exist; they handle different jobs:

  • FreshWater Filter Cleaner (this product, granular, 2.7 lb) — overnight soak, deep cleaning, every 3 months; restores cartridges to near-new condition
  • FreshWater Instant Filter Cleaner (spray, 16 fl oz) — 5-minute spray-on, monthly maintenance; handles surface contamination between deep cleans

Most owners benefit from using both — monthly surface treatment and quarterly deep treatment. Neither product fully replaces the other.

Works Alongside

  • FreshWater Instant Filter Cleaner — monthly maintenance between deep cleans
  • Replacement filter cartridges — when cartridges have reached end of life despite cleaning, replacement is the answer
  • FreshWater 5-Way Test Strips — confirm water chemistry is in range before reinstalling a freshly cleaned filter
  • FreshWater Defoamer — heavily soiled filters can release surfactant residue into the spa after reinstall; defoamer addresses the symptom
  • FreshWater Clean Screen Pre-Filter — cleaner fill water means less work for the cartridge in the first place

FreshWater® Brand FAQs

Do I have to own a Hot Spring or Caldera spa to use FreshWater products?

No. FreshWater chemicals, test strips, and most accessories work on any residential hot tub or spa, regardless of brand. The FreshWater Salt System and FreshWater IQ Smart Monitoring System are the exceptions — those are designed specifically for compatible Watkins Wellness spas (Hot Spring Highlife and Limelight, Caldera Utopia and Paradise). Everything else in the line is universal.

How is FreshWater different from other spa chemical brands?

Most spa water care brands are formulated by chemical companies and sold across hundreds of unrelated spa models. FreshWater is formulated by the same engineering team that designs Hot Spring and Caldera hot tubs — so the chemistry is built to match what real spa equipment actually needs. Dosing recommendations, concentration levels, and pH targets are calibrated against working spas, not a generic spec sheet. That precision tends to mean less chemical waste and fewer balance problems over the life of a fill.

Can I mix FreshWater products with other brands like Leisure Time or SpaGuard?

In most cases, yes — but with one important caveat. Don't mix sanitizer systems. A chlorine spa should stay on chlorine; a bromine spa should stay on bromine. Mixing sanitizer chemistries can create unwanted byproducts and unstable readings. Balancers (pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness) and supporting products like defoamers, clarifiers, and stain & scale defenders are generally compatible across brands. When in doubt, call us or bring a water sample to one of our showrooms before mixing chemistries.

How long do FreshWater chemicals last in storage?

Unopened, most FreshWater liquid and granular chemicals have a shelf life of 1 to 2 years from manufacture when stored cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight. Test strips last about 1 to 2 years if the bottle stays sealed with its desiccant pack between uses. Chlorine-based products lose strength faster than balancers, so rotate stock — oldest first — and avoid buying more than a single season's supply at a time. The expiration date is printed on the container.

Are FreshWater products safe for sensitive skin?

When dosed correctly and the water is properly balanced, yes. Most skin and eye irritation in hot tubs isn't caused by chlorine or bromine itself — it's caused by chloramines(used-up sanitizer that hasn't been oxidized) or by water that's outside the proper pH range. Owners with sensitive skin often do well on the FreshWater Salt System (lower active chlorine residual) or on a mineral-supported chlorine program. If skin irritation is an ongoing issue, see our Eye/Skin Irritation Problem Solver page.

Can FreshWater chemicals be returned by mail?

Some can, some can't — it depends on whether the product is classified as hazardous material (hazmat) by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Test strips, defoamers, calcium removers, clarifiers, and most balancers are non-hazmat and can be returned by mail. Chlorinating granules, bromine products, and pH/alkalinity down (a regulated acid)are hazmat and cannot ship back by mail under federal law — but they can be returned in person at any LTI showroom. See our Returns on Hazardous Materials page for the full list.

About FreshWater®

FreshWater® is the water care brand from Watkins Wellness — the parent company of Hot Spring, Caldera, and Freeflow Spas, and one of the largest manufacturers of premium hot tubs in the world. Watkins has been engineering spas and water care chemistry for over forty years, and FreshWater is the line they developed specifically to keep their own equipment running clean, clear, and properly balanced.

What that means for owners: FreshWater chemicals, sanitizers, test strips, and accessories are formulated and dosed for the same shells, jets, heaters, and circulation systems Watkins builds. Active ingredients, pH targets, and concentration levels are calibrated against real spa equipment — not generic pool chemistry repackaged for hot tubs. The result is a product line that works as well in a Hot Spring or Caldera spa as it does in any other residential hot tub on the market.

The FreshWater catalog covers everything from routine maintenance to advanced water care technology:

  • The FreshWater® Salt System — a sanitizer system that automatically generates chlorine from a salt cartridge, lasting up to a full year between water changes
  • The FreshWater® IQ Smart Monitoring System — sensor and controller that read chlorine, pH, and salt levels and display them on the spa's topside control
  • Sanitizers and sanitizer support — chlorinating granules, Ag+ Silver Ion Sanitizer, mineral cartridges
  • Balancers — pH/Alkalinity Up, pH/Alkalinity Down, calcium boosters
  • Water clarity and care — clarifiers, defoamers, stain & scale defenders, phosphate removers, Vanishing Act calcium remover
